DR. P KELLY MARCOM, ABLE TO LEAP TALL BUILDINGS SINGLE BOUND! MY SUPERMAN!!!…read more It's hard to share or tell you how much my Breast Cancer Oncologist, Dr. P Kelly Marcom working out of Duke Cancer Center located in Durham, North Carolina has meant to me. From the first time I met him when I was diagnosed (Jan 2015) until now, 2 years down this dusty road, he's been there for me 110% in all things, at all times. There is just something about him you can trust no matter what and it's obvious immediately. His brilliance, professionalism, kindness, sense of humor, the time he gives me...never rushes me, I feel safe in his hands...what can I say...he's the full package! Aside for being one of the most brilliant doctors in America (voted top 50 doctors in US for Breast Cancer Oncology), he's kind, insightful, funny, personable and sooo smart to name just a few attributes. He fights with me, not against me and will always accommodate me (or any patient) in any situation or way he can...ALWAYS! I've seen it first hand!!! In my case, I have one of the more rarer Breast Cancers... Triple Negative Breast Cancer found in only 15% of the BC population. They don't know a lot about this one, so having an expert in the field on board is non-negotiable. I had a few emergencies during my treatments and he was paged each time and was always there to guide my treatment solutions. I knew then I could always count on him and he's never proven me wrong. Also, finding other solutions to a rare breast cancer (that has none) beyond traditional protocols was an option for us but not necessary but because my pathology wasn't as good as he wanted to see, we looked for other options to protect against reoccurrence. Why not try everything available to you right? Most doctors wouldn't or couldn't find the time to look for options such as these...clinical trials, immunotherapy, etc... but he did! He found me a clinical trail for Triple Negative BC and even though it's not at Duke Cancer Center (his offices), he's arranged for me to participate in it at Siteman Cancer Center in St. Louis, again, providing all the necessary documentation required for me to be considered and ultimately accepted (1 out of 15 slots available...I was #12). It couldn't have happened without Dr. Marcom's help and persistence with the Pathologists to get my samples there asap. He was relentless when things went awry for a bit and wouldn't back down making sure I was taken care of and the others that followed me would be too! Through thick and thin...he's always been there for me and I am always so happy to see him. Who would conceive of being happy to see your Oncologist?!@#$ So when it comes to this doctor, well....there really are no words to convey my gratitude and heart for this man who has made it possible for me to be living a cancer free life with my family and even when I get a bit nervous about things from time to time (it happens to us all), he's always there to make a face at me like only he can, laugh at me and push me forward into comfort, trusting him, smiles and positive thinking to stop worrying. I'm glad he's my team captain and has my back and I couldn't or wouldn't pick a better doctor to walk my cancer journey with. God really blessed me with you Dr. Marcom. He cares about his patients and he's excellent at what he does. You have my trust, faith and gratitude Dr. Marcom and most of all have helped me grow as a person in courage, resilience, trust and the power of faith and laughter. I am so thankful for you in my life and your amazing staff that surrounds you. I imagine the angels in heaven stand in awe of you and the work you do and have done. I know I do... that is...stand in awe of you! God bless you now and always because what you do everyday makes a difference in so many lives. For this little lady, you can't wipe the smile off of my face!

The day of the appointment she was to fast and as a result her blood sugar was dropping. She called the office to ask about what she should do as they really needed the fasting labs to understand what was going on with her blood sugar. LaDonna stayed on the phone with her for about 20-30 minutes trying to reach the provider to know what to tell my daughter. Ultimately, the provider wasn't available so she contacted another (on call) provider for us. She really went above and beyond in trying to help us! Once there, the RN Nisha (unsure of spelling and exact pronunciation) was very kind and started getting my daughter screened (going over meds, taking vitals, etc) and when she saw it was taking longer than expected, she get another nurse to come in to assist so that the doctor could come in. When my daughters blood sugar was checked and it was low 50's, they quickly tended to her. The lab personnel came to the room to draw blood instead of having her walk to the lab. Another nurse came in with peanut butter crackers and apple juice. The PA that works with Dr. D'Alessio also came in to ask how she was feeling with the low blood sugar. They were all so attentive and made sure she was okay. Dr. D'Alessio was amazing. He asked very pointed questions about her history, symptoms, etc. in order to better understand what is happening with her body and hypoglycemia. He even thanked her for going through the tough fasting in order to get the information they need from her lab work. He answered any questions we had and assured us we'd hear from him once he got the labs back. I am so grateful for a team of highly trained and knowledgeable professions to help care for my daughter.

I'm writing this review probably 15 years too late. However Duke endocrinology fu*ked my life up!!!…read moreI'm a type 1 diabetic and was under Duke care my entire adolescence. They took no action but to blame me for my high sugar!! When in actuality they are just terrible uniformed doctors!! I made straight A's in high school (even though I had to crawl out of bed to make it to the toilet to puke every morning due to high sugars. I was even selected to go to governor school for art. However these assholes who dictated my childhood said I couldn't go because my sugars were too "out of control" After awhile (years and years) you start to believe their bullshit because you know nothing different. I eventually just gave up on doctors altogether. Long story short, years later, I ended up in the UNC emergency room. After waiting weeks ,with what turned out to be a Staff Infection, and too scared to go to the Dr I was told if I had shown up a day later my leg would have been amputated. I was never able to sign up for insurance because of pre-existing conditions and out of pocket is 3k plus a month highway robbery. However after staying at UNC for a week with a staff infection they taught me carb counting!! Wow what a novel (not new) idea that DUKE SHOULD HAVE TAUGHT ME WHEN I WAS 8 YEARS OLD!!! Needless to say it completely transformed my life. I can't help but wonder where I might be if DUKE HADN'T FU*KED MY LIFE UP BY BLAMING IT ALL ON ME!! I didn't need that sh*t! I could go into more detail of how and why but all I can say is MALPRACTICE!!!!!! from my personal experience!!! I think of suing these as$holes everyday for what they've done to me!! The least I can do is write this review and strongly suggest you look at UNC for endocrinology experts. Things may have changed since in the 15 years since I've been there but any parent out there with a young type 1 get them on the right track early!! Please for their sake check out what UNC endocrinology has to offer
