Recently, we've done the portions near Baxter Village, Waxhaw, and South Fork Trail. I know we've done way more than that, but those are the ones that come to mind recently. I bookmarked this spot for the seasonal spider lillies. After self-paying the admission fee and…read moreparking, the walk along the shore was quite pleasant on a mild day. Despite the river views, it took a half hour or so to get to the spider lillies, which are apparently limited to one particular location. It was hard to see them from shore, made harder by rising waters (the festival the previous day was likely thrown off by rain). I got enough of a glimpse of them to understand where the name comes from. The overall aesthetic of the park offered remnants of a historic canal, and boating and picnicking opportunities. It was a pleasant space, but not at the top of ones I'd want to drive out to and pay for.

The Rocky Spider Lily's are only located in certain areas ( SC, GA, and AL). Hoping to see them in another state as well. Its all about timing, make sure you check the websites for a bloom updates. The park is well kept and bathrooms are clean, which is a plus. During the Lily Festival parking is limited, so pack your patience. You will get parking, so no worries. The cost is $6 for each adult, very reasonable considering. They have a store with maps for the walking trails, its approx 1mile roundtrip to see the Lily's. If you want to see them up close and personal you must rent a canoe prior to coming. The park doesnt rent boats, a outside company will take you on a tour. I actually enjoyed the nature trails. They have a nice platform for viewing the lily's. The lily's are absolutely breathtaking, I truly enjoyed my day at this park. The trails are fairly short and well taken care of. There are some food and artisan vendors at the park. Tip: dont touch the lily's if your on a boat, all parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested. Please do your own research beforehand. A beautiful meandering trail through a suburban Greenway. Most of the trail is either asphalt or…read morewooden slat bridge, so easy to traverse for anyone on 2 feet, with a stroller or on a bicycle. The pathways stretch through a nicely forested area, some of which also has a small stream that snakes through a few communities in Matthews. Lots of runners, walkers, bikers, people with their dogs. It was safe and clean with a few trash bins along the way (always appreciated when I have bags of dog waste to throw out!). Parking lot seemed large enough for a Sunday morning. Dogs enjoyed seeing a little frog for the first time in their lives. We will certainly be back! Finding shaded walking trails for the dogs can be difficult and this was nice. The porta potties could be smelled from quite a distance away so I would avoid those.

This park is nothing like the Hermitage, which is the most substantial Andrew Jackson site, though…read moreit does share some artifacts. This more modest state park offers a historic schoolhouse and some other exhibits, as well as some nature trails. It purports to tell the story of a rural community where this future president was raised in a time of war. There was some intrigue here, and for a $3 entrance fee, it was not a bad stop. Some historical interpretation was available. There were also some significant picnic sites and an amphitheater that was hosting some sort of event.

For a few dollars a person, this is a good day use park. There is a picnic area near the parking…read morelot. The amphitheatre is nearby also. Then it is just a short walk to the museum and a few monuments. I'm not sure if there is really any connection to Jackson himself aside from the name and monuments. But there are some artifacts which date from around his time. The history here, indeed the whole area, is a history lacking from the west coast. So, whether related to the 7th president or just his era, it is cool for a life long west coaster to visit and learn. Other highlights of this state park which I did not have an opportunity to check out are camp sites, a lake with canoe rentals and a 1 mile nature trail. Practically something for everyone.
