But rather than just selling the manufacturing devices, it also doubles up as an old fashioned haberdashery, packed to the brim with balls of yarn and spools galore! Admittedly, they specialise in sewing and knitting machines (which are all displayed splendidly) but since I can't afford one of those bad boys I stuck to the supply section. They had pigeon holes stuffed with wool of all shapes, sizes and varieties (including pom pom wool to knit yourself a bubbly scarf!) Towards the back, they stock knitting and sewing guides, patterns, along with hundreds of good quality spools. Here you'll find everything you need to start your crafty business, including an ample supply of pin cushions, pins, glue, hem guidelines and Wondaweb for those of us who like to cheat *cough cough*. I would like to move away from using Wondaweb to begin stitching clothes up the right way, and Drummond is great for lending inspiration. The staff were exceptionally friendly and made me feel at ease, even though I baltantly didn't know where to start. With their attentive natures, I felt like I was being taken care of. I want to start making dresses out of old skirts and tops I find in charity shops, and in here I saw loads of accessories and shiny thread you could embellish a tired outfit with. It's great for experts as they have a ton of supplies, but equally useful for beginners like myself who don't know their Singer from their...well, to be honest I can't even think of another machine maker! But with the helpful staff and plethora of stock, Drummonds is a good place to start. read more

Disclaimer here is that I'm really rating this shop as a knitter, not as a sewist. I understand that their products and services relating to sewing machines are very good and people travel to them specifically for this. However, as a knitter... I go to this shop fairly often because it is right near work for me, but if it weren't, I would NEVER go. The staff hover and constantly ask if you need any help - I usually spend about 5 minutes in the shop and am asked if I need any help 2-3 times. It's very off-putting. I'm convinced they think I'm going to nick something. They're a little condescending as well - "put your debit card away safe now" when I finish paying, etc. (Possibly a natural reaction of the kindly granny staff to a person under the age of 40?) The wool selection is limited. It seems very much geared towards grannies knitting either big aran sweaters for their menfolk, or cute little baby things. There is a decent selection of affordable sport/DK baby wools, a few sock wools, cones for machine knitting, and huge 800 gram balls of Wendy aran, but no smaller aran balls. I was looking for some aran for children's mittens, but was told that "we don't have those dear, the smaller balls work out too expensive". Um. Well. Thank you, I guess? I'll just go to a different shop then... My advice: come here if you need your sewing machine repaired, if you're a knitter over the age of 65, or if you're planning to make large projects in neutral tones. If you are a sewing or machine knitting enthusiast, then get yourself to DD's. He's your man for machine repairs, services or a brand new sparkling machine. The shop itself is almost like and aladins cave when you walk in, as there are boxes piled up at the door. DD sells wool, threads and other sewing nessities. I bought my dress-makers dummy from here. My granny came down to get her machine knitting wool from here frequently too. It's a busy wee shop and it's quite tight, so know what you are going in for otherwise you may find yourself gettin rather overwhelmed and lost! Don't let that put you off because he stocks a lot and if you are after a particular part he will probably be able to source it! read more

He offers free delivery and collection during the lifetime of your mmachine and free teaching days, often covering your transport costs. I have bought sewing machines from David for 30 years. He is fantastic, his knowledge of sewing machines is awesome. Yes I am biased, but the service from David and his staff is incomparable.......he is always at the end of the phone for advice, no pressure to buy, just advice........ I am sad we no longer live in Scotland, I can no longer go in and rummage round the shop, or discuss any sewing problems I might have with David or his staff. I recently ordered a new machine it was on my doorstep the next day. If it needs service I just ring and the machine is collected and delivered back after the service has been completed...wonderful. VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE! ARROGANT AND RUDE OWNER! I bought an electronic sewing machine in the US. Unfortunately, unaware of the difference in voltage in the electric sockets between US and the UK, I plugged it in. Totally my mistake. Something made a dull pop sound in the machine and it wasn't working. I was aware that to get the machine fixed might not be easy and/nor cheap. Yet I had not much choice, but try. There isn't many repair services in Edinburgh area and David Drummond is definitely the biggest one. I first emailed them giving all the details. I was advised to call the shop and speak to Mr Drummond personally. And that's what I did. To my contentment I was assured that the machine can be fixed and I need to bring it to the shop for check and price quote. However, when I arrived to the shop I heard from Mr Drummond that he can't help me! He didn't do the smallest check on the machine!!! When I introduced myself, he said: 'oh! You are the girl with the machine from America? Unfortunately, we can't help you!' And then he started to explain me the difference in the voltage between the UK and US and how me plugging it here blew everything up inside etc. (as if I didn't know that already!!!). So I asked why didn't he tell me that on the phone, because I feel that I wasted my time coming all the way to the shop? Then I heard that he probably could fix it, that probably is the board that got burned and probably Singer could get this part from US, but probably it'll be expensive. There was lots of assumption and not much will to help from Mr Drummond side. I believe he could have called Singer beforehand and get the quote for that board (if he didn't even care to open the machine and check if that what is broken). Then he was trying to convince me that I bought very cheap and bad quality machine ('made in Vietnam?!', as he pointed. I'd like to know one big company that doesn't have their products manufactured in Asia or anywhere where they can save on labour!) that is not worth fixing. While in fact, this is one of the best rated electronic sewing machines for intermediate users! Mr Drummond was also very inconsistent in what he was saying. Once he claimed not remembering talking to me on the phone and at other occasion (where it was convenient for him) he remembered very well. I found him dishonest and not reliable person. On the top of that he was rather arrogant and rude. I had a feeling that he is trying more to prove me wrong and make his point rather than provide good customer service. On the top of it all he made RASIST comment!!! He could clearly hear my foreign accent, so at some point of our conversation he asked me where I'm originally from. I asked how is it important for the service he provides here. As an answer he started guessing where I could be from, suggesting at the same time that people from my country are not very nice. How someone who is there to fix and sell sewing machines can ask a customer such question and make such suggestions!!!! Unacceptable!!!! read more

I cannot believe it is nearly a year since speaking with David at the Ingleston Quilt show regarding the Janome Horizon 7700. I already had a Janome Memory Craft 6500 machine . At the time there was an offer in place for £500 .00 for part exchange for your old sewing machine. After walking away to think about it I later returned to have another "look". I sadly had lost my wonderful husband the year previously and was still in the "shopping may make me feel better stage" that thought is rubbish by the way only time and lovely memories can make that happen . So after my second "look" I decided against it and continued on my journey home to Pegswood in . Northumberland. On the way home a dear friend reminded me why I didn`t need it , I would not be able to lift it in and out of the car to classes as it was heavier than my excisting one. By the time I reached home I was kicking myself for not listening to my love of the Horizon instead of being sensible. I did not intend taking it to classes. Deciding to sleep on it I woke the next morning and by 9.05am I was on the phone to David by 9.10am I had bought it, paid for it, and arranged deliverey. David even sent me a box with a courier for me to return my Memory Craft 6500 for part exchange. free of charge. What other dealer would allow you to receive a brand new machine for £500.00 cheaper until he had received my part ex. None that I know of! Needless to say I fell in instant love with my Horizan 7700 , I don`t need to take it to classes as I also have a lightweight machine although very basic which serves that purpose. Or so I thought, now that the Ingleston show is nearly upon us again I have decided to upgrade my" taking to classes" machine . Although I will be sensible !!!! I had also previously purchased a Janome embroidery machine from David once again over the phone . He instills such confidence in yourself you come off the phone thinking Yes I can do that. So if you see a lady "Dithering" at Drummonds` stand in February just give me a nudge and say hello it will proberbly be me. read more

I took my sewing machine to David Drummond for a SMALLL repair (the threader guide had snapped)and was advised this would take 3 weeks!! Three weeks came and went and I contacted Mr Drummond to ask when my machine would be ready. I was informed by Mr Drummond my sewing machine was on the bench and would definately be ready the following week! True to form no call to this effect and I called again the following week and was advised they were just about to calll me to let me know the machine still had not been repaired. Good customer service!!! I then advised the assistant the machine would be collected later in the day and I would take my business elsewherel, however strangely enough the machine was ready for collecteion an hour after my call. To say the service was extremely poor is an understatement and Mr Drummond's assurance that my machine would be ready was complete nonsense. I also found him rather arrogant! read more
