When it comes to money, I am completely useless (except for spending it - I excel in that field). So it's no surprise that the simple thought of tax time sends me into a state of mind that makes Britney Spears look sane. Luckily I have David Caplan to take care of business for me. David is extremely knowledgeable about all things fiscal (he's a deductions wizard) and he's honest and reliable. But perhaps my favorite thing about him are the hilarious tax-time letters he sends out - this dude has a wicked sense of humor! His fees are very reasonable and he'll hold your hand if you need him to, which is perfect for a financial idiot like myself. I needed an accountant in a pinch and contacted David based on this Yelp review. He got back to me immediately. He was clear about his rates. And he helped me sort out my confusedosity. Confusedosity isn't even a word, so you can tell what taxes do to me :) Most accountants don't seem to know what email is, let alone have a pretty decent web site. Unfortunately, I experienced a rather unhelpful set of emails with David regarding our potentially working together. We had a particular situation that required some extra attention, but certainly nothing earth shattering. Mr. Caplan wanted more details regarding our history or needs before providing a quote for services. When I provided those details, he didn't just reply and offer a course of action, he replied that we had a "problem" on our hands. He didn't offer any solutions or recommend we meet to chat or move forward. We did, in the end, find a different accountant to help us and are thrilled with the result. The "problem" he described was hardly a big deal, and all's well that ends well. I trust that David does good work, but there's room for improvement here. read more

David Caplan was, to us, an undiscovered gem. Our family was with another accountant for 40 years but switched to David after her death. His work is a revelation--moderately complicated taxes can be done in an afternoon, at your home, and affordably. He's knowledgeable and personable. A family member selling her home didn't believe that the common purchasing tool the buyers requested (a "seller's assist") was not some kind of scam and refused to accept their offer until she had talked to David. He explained how common the assist is and how it does not affect one's taxes, and she relaxed enough to go ahead with the sale. (Of course, she then told her own real estate agents she didn't trust them, but that she trusted David implicitly. And he does seem worthy of that trust!) We haven't seen his hilarious tax-time letters (referenced by another yelper), but we hope to find one in the mailbox one day. Maybe we need to be just a little delinquent so he'll feel obligated to send us one. read more

Upon reading the other positive reviews on Yelp - I called David to discuss moving money from a PSERS (public school employee's) pension to another retirement plan vs. withdrawing funds for a business startup. I discussed the options with him over the phone for approximately 20 minutes. Although we had never met or spoken before, he gave me tremendous advice and I never once felt solicited.
