Excellent selection and great prices. Lots of unworked stone, as well as cut and polished. And the owner is friendly and helpful.

Dave's rock shop in Custer SD is the best. They spent a lot of time with us to pick up exactly what we wanted.

If minerals and geology are your thing, you won't want to miss the Miners Merchantile in Custer,…read moreSD! This place has it all and Gretchen is a wealth of knowledge. We purchased the most beautiful vase made of Peacock Marble (yellow with grey veining) and an adorable buffalo made by a local school teacher from a Septarian Nodule. These "mud balls" began forming over 150 million years ago, following volcanic eruptions that killed the sea life where they were trapped. My buffalo now contains some of these fossils as well as gorgeous layers of sediment and crystals. Miners is fun, educational and you'll leave with a memory that will last forever. They are closed for Winter from Nov. 1st to Feb. 1st.

Wow!!! I guess you can't believe everything you see on the internet. I heard that people from SD…read morewere very nice. I stopped by here with my family while we waited for a table next door. Might I say, my family and I are a very conservative and friendly bunch. We are also on vacation, and came through to see Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park on our way to a different state. We were greeted while entering the store by the store owner, and my wife engaged in conversation with her. The business owner asked where we were from, and my wife reluctantly said we were from California. We were immediately told we were welcome to spend our money in town, but needed to get out of town when we were done. She has got to be one of the rudest, most bitter old hags I have ever met in my life. Our shopping experience was completely overshadowed by her viewpoint of politics and geography. Someone might want to explain to her that not all people from California come from LA and San Francisco. You can also consider my one star as a sign of my gratitude for saving me so much money, since she was so rude that my wife decided to leave without buying anything. Sad to see that such a beautiful town has such an ugly person in it. We will still enjoy our trip, but will buy our souvenirs somewhere else.

If you live in Canada stay away from The Rock Shed…read more I ordered $33 worth of supplies and was ok to pay $55 shipping as it was still cheaper that local competitors. Disappointed how that they used FedEx who sent me a bill, 2 months later, for another $30 in clearance fees. Even worse, I tried calling The Rock Shed but no one ever answers. I sent an email inquiry and 3 weeks later(and counting) they can't be bothered to reply. Based on their lack of customer care honestly, no matter where you live, I would NOT recommend.

I'm not one to write many reviews but this place definitely warrants one…read more I do want to make it clear that I've never been to the actual shop I'm writing this review based solely on my online orders experiences. I recently got into rock tumbling a few months ago and didn't really know where to start. Everything kept leading me back to the Rock shed website. I won't lie it was a bit weird because they're online pages very outdated but I said what the heck. My first order round is spent about $170 I bought Brazilian agates, Mexican moss agates, Montana moss and a few others. I also bought some rocks from other websites. And comparing the quality that I got from the rockshed to the other websites was astronomical. With the rock said it looked like someone went in there and hand picked a great batch for each bag. It didn't look like bottom of the barrel stuff. Whereas to other websites it literally look like they went to their backyard and just threw rocks in the bag. Since then I have ordered grits and even a pendant and have been super happy with all my orders. I not only recommend this store for rocks but also the grits and anything rock related. They give you tons of information about the rocks. Where it comes from and just background information that is super useful, no other website that I have seen offers that amount of information the way the The Rock Shed does. The prices are super reasonable compared to other stores online. The shipping isn't much higher than other places and for the quality you're getting it's worth it. Also, you know where your rocks are coming from. I ordered a couple bags from Amazon and nowhere does it tell you where they're actually coming from until you get them and they were all from China! My only recommendation would be that maybe update the website a little bit but it does add to its charm. I hope to one day visit The Rock Shed and it's awesome staff.
