I had a simply wonderful experience in this store! The person who greeted me (maybe the proprietor, dunno) was maximally helpful in suggesting reasonably-priced wines that could stand up to Whit's "cuisine." This being said, I was totally amazed to find a wine store of this quality on a peninsula where most wine is sold in mom-and-pop liquor stores that specialize in hard liquor and stock a few wine bottles with cute animals on the labels only for the occasional misguided soul who hasn't yet converted to Buffalo Trace. The Rockaway Park Liquor & Wine Warehouse about 1.5 miles away is a serious competitor to Ship to Shore, but the Warehouse has more labels with cute animals than I could tolerate and also had long lines for the cash registers when I visited. The staff is not here (just) to stock shelves - they're friendly, knowledgeable and are ready to get you matched-up with your new favorite wines. Or, they'll leave you alone to peruse, if you prefer. The owner, Adam, is a real connoisseur that doesn't make you feel uncomfortable about how little you know. He's curated an impressive selection and knows EVERY bottle in the shop. He's happy to make recommendations based on what you like; just don't ask him to pick a favorite - he's got many... I've been back a few times, including last Friday when Adam and the crew were tasting some wines for the first time. We spent an hour sampling the different reds, hanging out with the staff and giving the thumbs up and thumbs down to each new bottle. Even learned a few things about the regions sampled. The selection is extensive, ranging from "under $21" grouping to the special occasion bottles and plenty in between. Along the back wall is a fridge full of chilled cocktails in a can. I've tried about a half dozen and the quality is excellent. They even have 6-pack insulated holders for your convenience. Need liquor, they have that as well - just not the overpriced "name" brands; Adam likes to focus on smaller producers that taste better and cost less. This sounds like a sales pitch, but it isn't. For me, I prefer down to earth staff and low prices, like at Dave's Liquor on Rockaway Beach Blvd, opposite the mini- mall Family Dollar & T-Mobile stores on Beach 80-something street.
