Hamilton, New Jersey has been waiting for salvation, or at least for something new to eat. For weeks, cars have lined up in the shoulder of Route 33 like pilgrims on a fried chicken crusade, all of them seeking enlightenment in a red and yellow shrine called Dave's Hot Chicken. Naturally, I had to see what the fuss was about. I ordered takeout because the cars stretched past the entrance way like a metal conga line led by hunger and curiosity . The object of my investigation was Dave's Sliders with fries. The sliders arrived on little potato buns, as if each were the pride of a humble Idaho farmer, topped with kale slaw, pickles, and Dave's sauce. And reader, they were beautiful. Everything worked in harmony. The crisp of the chicken, the brightness of the slaw, the subtle rebellion of the pickles. I chose the "medium" spice level, which turned out to be about as dangerous as a well-mannered librarian. Next time I will go "hot," maybe even "reaper," because if I am going to suffer, I would rather it be for art or poultry. Now, as for the mac and cheese: tragedy, pure and simple. It tasted as though it had been boiled in a space-age pouch, the kind of food that might be served in the afterlife if the afterlife were a public-school cafeteria. It was mac and cheese that had given up on its dreams. Still, the name of the place is Dave's Hot Chicken, not Dave's Existentially Redeemed Macaroni. The chicken was excellent, and that is what matters. So I will give Dave's four stars out of five, because perfection is a myth, and because next time I intend to burn just a little brighter. read more

Hype can go a long way in the fast food game and in the case Dave's Hot Chicken the anticipation almost met reality. i went with medium spice which is plenty hot but I'm left wondering does the chicken even matter when slathered under the five alarm coating. I'm not quite at a 4 for Dave's. With 2 other similar options nearby, I'd rank this as #2 out of 3. But the high visibility location on rt 33 will make this a popular spot and I'll eventually revisit. I got here before the lunch rush at around 11:30, they were already doing a good amount of business but it wasn't too bad, my wait for takeout was about 6 minutes. I chose the #1 which is 2 tenders with fries med spice, a slider on it's own with mild spice, Mac n cheese and a chocolate shake. The slider, which should have been mild was hot AF, very little coleslaw on it, maybe a few strands. Still a sandwich but I probably won't get again. I was worried that the tenders at a higher spice level would be scorching, but they were milder than the mild on the slider. I liked the white bread with it and used it to make little bread wraps with the tender. The dill pickles were good too. Sauce was just orangish mayo. Fries were lightly seasoned and good. Mac n cheese was very good but a very small portion. The chocolate shake was one shade darker than vanilla, I added my own choc chips, it was creamy though. I felt like the portions were small for the price with the exception of the slider. The tenders I got were not huge, and about twice the cost as my #1 spot. With only 1 sauce available I again considered the other, which has like 20. Customer service was quick and friendly. read more

Absolutely DELICIOUS!!! This was my first time here and I will be running back if it continues to stay this good. I ordered on the mobile app and picked up in the restaurant. You must go up to the counter and give your name to be handed your Togo bag. They have plastic ware and napkins available to grab if you need more, though in the app you can mark it off that you want some with your order. Upon pulling in the restaurant I will say there were few spots because it was so packed, a good sign! The drive through was 10+ cars long but it moved fast from what I could see. I ordered the four mini sliders and Mac n cheese and boy what a good decision- YUM!! Highly recommend. The Dave's sauce is great! I got no spice for 'heat level' since I don't tolerate spicy food, and they were still flavorful! The Mac n cheese was thick and creamy and very tasty. The best part was of course the chicken itself. Breading was soooo good but not too breaded and there was still more white meat chicken than breading. Very tender and juicy! The ratio was perfect. I have already told friends to go there because it was so good. I can't wait to be back! Keep it up and you have a whole family of repeat customers. read more

A pleasant surprise. The sliders are an excellent between fried chicken and hamburger. The "tender" is s slightly larger than the bun. The verges are a good selection. They should rename this place Dave's WTF SO HOTT EVEN HOT THE NEXT MORNING HOT Chicken. I loveee spicy but I was not prepared. They have several levels of spice and I chose "hot" because I have always loved spicy food. *sighs in regret* There were 2 hotter levels than what I picked and I'm sure I would have been hospitalized if I picked "reaper" the hottest level. Consider yourself warned. They do have ranch but being a spicy girly I also chose reaper ranch and my food was nearly inedible. This is a perfect restaurant for the employees to ask "have you ever been here before? I'd love to save you from internal 2nd degree burns, if I can!" The fries have seasoning on them as well for absolute over stimulation. The Dave's sauce is basically mayo but it's the only thing that can save you once you're that deep in Nashville hot AF seasoning.
