This place seems to get a lot of negative reviews but I really enjoy shopping here. It's very hard to find discounted Birkenstocks online so I'm paying full price regardless. Their Birkenstock selection is excellent of being a mom and pop shop. Yes, the staff is a bit older but once you actually talk to them they are very friendly. My daughter picked out a new pair of suede Arizona birks yesterday and the staff was great. She even tried on without socks and the sales lady was very nice the entire time. shoes are great. what's stinks is the return policy. I returned my shoes and got a paper receipt no money back !!! I know there's a sign on the wall that tells you that but I think they should really forget about it and just give you your money back. I won't ever shop there again because of the return policy and I haven't used my paper receipt yet to get another pair of shoes and maybe they expect you to lose it because they have no record of your receipt. I think that's a really bad policy and you guys need to change it! I've talked to a lot of people and they say they won't go back to Dave's either because of it ! read more

While browsing with a friend on old woman stood in the doorway staring us down as if waiting for us to shoplift. It was uncomfortable, disconcerting, not to mention rude and insulting. Actually downright creepy and obvious as to what she was there for. Time and again, an unpleasant experience and it's too bad because they do have a wide selection of quality products. I went in here very excited to support a local business. I bought a pair of shoes and in getting home I decided that they just didn't fit right, and for $150 they needed to fit perfectly. When I tried to return 10 days later I discovered they don't do ANY refunds. Absolutely ridiculous. They have the merchandise in never worn, perfect condition to still sell AND they have my money. I will never shop here again. Order online. A small business that doesn't care to work with a customer should be put out of business by online stores with better customer service. It's too bad this shop is so horrible, because the building itself and the downtown location are wonderful. There is a feeling that permeates the shop, a feeling that the owner is paranoid that customers are always trying to rip him off. From the restrictive return policy (that they need to staple to your receipt) to the signs in the "bargain basement" that tell you you're on camera, this is a store that exudes mistrust. But in reality, it is the customer that should be wary of the staff here. In one short visit, I watched a saleswoman give wrong information to a man, and a salesman sell a guy new shoes when all he needed was waterproofing dressing (which the store also sells). Prices are high ($20 off of $150 shoes qualifies a pair for the bargain basement) for the garbage that they sell. Their highest end boots are either Chinese made Vasques or Red Wing's entry level line. Their bread and butter are cheap men's Keens and women's Sorels . . . all of which they sell at full retail. Be careful not to linger when you shop, or the owner will survey you disapprovingly, because he just knows you're there to screw him. read more

I travel and like to shop in interesting stores. Daves is perhaps the most unique shoe store i have ever been in. It is like shopping in a turn of the century museum, circa 1915. I have visited the store often and gotten to know Dave who is a quite nice and accommodating. I don't understand the reviewers who complain about the hours or return policy. This is not like shopping in a big box store, a mall, or on amazon. If that's what they want they should not shop at Dave's. read more

I've shopped at Dave's several times over the last few years. Great selection of quality shoes, prices seem relatively fair. I do have issue with their hours of operation however. They are only open 10 to 5:30 pm weekdays?! Seems they are marketing to the unemployed, vacationers and tourists. What about local folks who work for a living and would like to purchase shoes/boots at you store after 5:30 pm in the evening? Dave's should stay open later in the evenings. read more

This has been my favorite shoe shop for the past 9 years. They consistently have an excellent selection of shoes, boots, slippers, and even other accessories. The customer service has always been top notch and they are capable of ordering anything you need if they don't already have it. What's also nice is the wide selection of men's and women's sale shoes in their 'bargain basement'. I don't think I've ever left their store without finding exactly what I needed for a good price. I've shopped at Dave's for years, purchased probably 4 pairs of shoes/boots every year. They are wonderful at helping me find the right pair of shoes, and they carry awesome brands. I used to describe them as my favorite shoe store, and I probably still would if they had a better return policy for defective merchandise. I purchased a pair of shoes that was in the $100 range, wore them 5 times, and they came apart. It was obvious the shoes were not mistreated on my part. Their policy is to send the shoe back to the manufacturer, and let you know which percentage of the purchase they will refund. I think it was a 3-4 week process for me to get my money back. No wait--- Dave's doesn't give you money back, I got an in store credit. All of the great service I had at Dave's went right out the window with that one experience. Now I limit my purchases in their store to brands that I'm confident with their quality (Keen, or Born). read more
