If you need a hardware, home decorating and garden store, then this is the place to come. And…read moreyou'll get a little bit of inspiration along the way instead of just hammer and nails. This store is particularly good for its garden equipment; I can actually think of nowhere better in Cardiff to come for this type of thing. For all your gardening needs, and wants. As Christmas time they do a lovely selection of Norwegian Spruce (it's all about the Norwegian Spruce). They have a massive lighting section, which, although perhaps not on a par with the like of Litecraft, has some really lovely options (and is a good place to hide when it's -9 degrees outside). They also have some great wallpaper and paint options, and, most importantly, they have one of those magical paint-colour-mixer-things. Further to the back of the store you leave behind all those cosy fittings, like taps and doorknobs (pretty), and find yourself in a giant's world of wood and fertilizer.

It does say that it's a warehouse and it has everything DIY you could ever probably need and much, much more. They even have a separate trades area where all the builders can go and stock up too. I went in to have a look at paint without knowing what colour I really wanted. That was a big mistake and I ended up leaving empty handed, except for a few samples because I couldn't possibly pick from the massive collection. I did however pick up some cheap rollers and brushes in preparation and spent about an hour looking around the rest of the place deciding what else I wanted to do! Not the kind of place you can really just nip into but its selection is unbeatable and the flowers and garden section is great.

Clarence hardware is a proper old fashioned shop, a family business that has been open for the last 50 years. The hardware and DIY shop offers something that very few other shops do these days, they offer a one to one service. Their staff are friendly and knowledgeable and are more than likely to crack a good humoured joke or two. They don't have a website because they just have too many varieties of things to list. To give you a picture they stock 11 types of florescent tube and 80 different types of light-bulb. This isn't spatially a huge shop, but they manage to fit a massive amount in...In fact their stock is so extensive that it spills out onto the street, tin baths, bonfire bins, compost and more are stacked by and even hung up on the wall outside. ...Oh and they are extremely reasonably priced. Tip: Clarence hardware offers a brilliant value key cutting service (only a few quid) and free local delivery of large goods. Open 9.45-5.15 Monday - Saturday

I was trying to put up some blinds in my bedroom, but needed to cut them to size . Being a bit helpless in these matters, I ended up going over the road to this place for a saw of some kind. The guy in the shop was lovely, and when I told him what I was attempting to do he offered to cut it to size for me - so off I went back to my flat to get the blinds, which he then sorted out for me. Talk about customer service! I'd highly recommend this little independent shop over the bigger chains such as B&Q, where the staff are often elusive, dismissive and indifferent. Here you get a personal service with a genuine smile!

Although they stock a wide range of really affordable tools and gardening equipment, business has been pretty slow... that was until last month! Spring happened overnight. Gardens that had been dormant for about six months sprang into action, and put on enough of a spurt to make up for the desperately long winter. Nature will always overcome! So, the people came out in their droves and bought all of the equipment they needed to get on with their gardens and maintenance jobs... and then it all went quiet again.... A prelude to the World Cup may be? They also offer key cutting and lock smithing by the way!

There is something wonderfully old fashioned about this shop. Everyone who lives in the area talks…read moreabout it with a fondness that is difficult to deny. When I was a young teenager I first discovered this phenomenon, and was confused, it was to be said. A hardware store? Why is everyone so excited? It's so boooooooring. But now I've grown up and have started to think very differently. I went in the other day, out of the same old curiosity, and I 'got it'. This shop is filled to the brim with everything that you need to satisfy your hardware needs. But it's the cosy factor and the personable service in this shop that makes it such a pleasant experience to go into. I was trying to find a bulb for my friend's lamp, and, stupidly, had not checked to see what type it took. But the person behind the counter figured it out when supplied with a description of said lamp, and lo and behold! they were right. Imagine is B&Q or Wickes shrank down and got a heart. This would result in something very much the same as Hardings Hardware. A shop to support and be proud of.

I must admit, I'm not handy in the slightest, so all of the D-I-Y work is handed over to my beloved, who can wield a hammer with amazing grace. I, on the other hand, would lose a finger. It's definitely worth coming by here if you're in the area - although it's a bit away from the centre of town (and far away from my abode), so I normally just try to secure whatever I need from nearby Bay shops. In any case, I think Harding's is one of the better independent shops around for hardware tools and other DIY fundamentals, as the shelves are well-stocked and the staff here are lovely.
