I was trying to put up some blinds in my bedroom, but needed to cut them to size . Being a bit helpless in these matters, I ended up going over the road to this place for a saw of some kind. The guy in the shop was lovely, and when I told him what I was attempting to do he offered to cut it to size for me - so off I went back to my flat to get the blinds, which he then sorted out for me. Talk about customer service! I'd highly recommend this little independent shop over the bigger chains such as B&Q, where the staff are often elusive, dismissive and indifferent. Here you get a personal service with a genuine smile!

So, the people came out in their droves and bought all of the equipment they needed to get on with their gardens and maintenance jobs... and then it all went quiet again.... They remind me of all…read morethose 'fun' bank holiday weekends when we used to traipse up and down aisles of MDF and curtain rails before the hammering and cursing began and you knew it was time to head out on your bike for a bit, or else be roped in to help find the 'missing part' of the flat-pack wardrobe. These days hardware stalls are the places to get my wire and nuts and bolts for making jewellery and fancy dress costumes. It sells much more than that though. Pliers, monkey wrenches, sand paper, screws, nails, clamps, all sorts of DIY usefulness. Frankly I don't know how they find anything in there, there are so many little packs and boxes, but they do.

When I was a young teenager I first discovered this phenomenon, and was confused, it was to be said. A hardware store? Why is everyone so excited? It's so boooooooring. But now I've grown up and have started to think very differently. I went in the other day, out of the same old curiosity, and I 'got it'. This shop is filled to the brim with everything that you need to satisfy your hardware needs. But it's the cosy factor and the personable service in this shop that makes it such a pleasant experience to go into. I was trying to find a bulb for my friend's lamp, and, stupidly, had not checked to see what type it took. But the person behind the counter figured it out when supplied with a description of said lamp, and lo and behold! they were right. Imagine is B&Q or Wickes shrank down and got a heart. This would result in something very much the same as Hardings Hardware. A shop to support and be proud of.

I must admit, I'm not handy in the slightest, so all of the D-I-Y work is handed over to my beloved, who can wield a hammer with amazing grace. I, on the other hand, would lose a finger. It's definitely worth coming by here if you're in the area - although it's a bit away from the centre of town (and far away from my abode), so I normally just try to secure whatever I need from nearby Bay shops. In any case, I think Harding's is one of the better independent shops around for hardware tools and other DIY fundamentals, as the shelves are well-stocked and the staff here are lovely.

For those hard to find tools and unusual requirements like generator, this place has it with the sales force to convince you that you need it, obviously the more power tools equal the more masculine you are so better stock up. Imagine going into a large warehouse like B&Q or Halford and you've got the picture of Machine Mart.

Cobwood Bros Hardware Store is replaced by a second hand store…read more... The Second Hand Shop on Clifton Street is a recent addition to this struggling commercial road. It used to be Cobwood Bros. hardware store for as long as anyone can remember, but the one way system coupled with the recession saw it close its doors for the last time this year. This is a huge loss to Clifton Street as well as the owners. The Second Hand Shop doesn't actually have a name, but this is what the locals are calling it, and so I guess it will stick. It is likely that discount and second hand stores are the only types of business that will survive on this strangulated street since the councils decision to implement a questionable one way system in the area. The cafes and takeaways will also survive, but the level of trade that they will lose over time will mean that there are mean pickings from here on in... it's a sorry state of affairs! Although I rue the loss of Cobwood Bros. I have to admit to really liking The Second Hand Shop. It is full of my kind of tat, ranging from white goods to furniture and bric-a-brac.

I don't think I will, but if I do I'll come here. Twenty odd quid sounds like a good deal. But in the short-term I won't be partaking. Another big signifier is the sign above the counter which explains that this is where the VAT gets added. Most shops open to the public rather than trade will go to the trouble of putting the full price on the sticker. Not here. Croft Street Warehouse is a strange kind of place. The shop stretches back further than you think. It's eerily quiet. You can get party plates and shower fixtures. Hand wash and sanding equipment. Tomato plant feed and more rawl plugs that you'd ever need. I get the impression that they'll stock Christmas decorations, but in industrial quantities or the kind you find attached to white vans. This is the place to come if you need manly things... or a cheap toilet.

They are no more expensive than the big DIY shops and the staff are very informative and knowledgeable. You can buy pretty much anything here and you can also receive lots of expert knowledge about lots of aspects of household care, DIY etc. Support your local ironmonger, it would be a real shame if shops like these succombed to the big global giants.
