Dark Star Book Store is located on the main street (Xenia Ave.) in Yellow Springs. I like the ease of entry (no stairs) and the outside tables for enjoying a drink or people-watching. Once inside, the store is packed with new and used books and comics from all genres. Additionally, they sell media like records, board games, notecards, stickers, bookmarks, magnets, pins, t-shirts, plushies, mugs, and coasters. There's a cat named Spooky who reigns over everything. The shelves are clearly labeled, and I imagine the capable staff can locate anything you ask for. The friendly cashier even gave me a free bookmark and told me the story about Spooky. read more

Super fun used book store in downtown Yellow Springs. They have a heavy sci/fi fantasy theme, which was fun, and a variety of used books with great prices penciled into the front cover. There was also a really nice selection of adult coloring books and puzzle books, and if I didn't have a stack of coloring books at home, I would have picked up a few! There is a black and white shop cat and friendly people at the counter. In the summer, I've seen them roll carts out onto the sidewalk. You can certainly spend some time in here! read more

I was happy to find an independent bookstore in the heart of Yellow Springs. This is the perfect addition to a bustling downtown. This particular bookstore sported a hint of musty book smell and could use a little bit of a facelift. Not in a fancy way but in a charm sense. Dark Store is lacking the charm you often find in small town bookstores. However, they do offer a fun variety of cards, books for varying audiences and reasonable prices. Their spot along the main strip in Yellow Springs makes it easy to pop in and out and visit coffee shops, toy stores and more along the way. This is a favorite stop of ours every time we get to Yellow Springs. It's a popular store so it gets quite crowded. They sell a variety of gift-store type items in the front of the store. Coffee cups, calendars, magnets, etc. The books are in the back. They have decent selection of older books and a good variety of genres for the size of the store. I buy a book(s) every time I stop in. The shop cat, a very large black cat named Eko, hangs out in his cat bed near the register. read more

I like independent bookstores so I stop in at Dark Star if around there. It has a good selection of used books. There's also lots of comics and magazines. It has sales and specials to look out for. There's also the big cat which is popular with customers. I always find something interesting here. The workers are super friendly and will help you find anything. This bookstore is a good fit for the ecccentric town. It has too much to look through. The comic books section can have some good stuff. A lot of them are only 25 cents. The science fiction is another good section. It also has lots of games and toys. The bad part is the store is too unorganized. It has boxes of unsorted books laying everywhere. It would save some time if they were ordered better. They have a 20% sale on used books on Wednesdays. It's the best time to come in. This is when the store will usually be the most crowded. It's also the home of Mr. Eko. The big cat is usually curled up in a box or corner. I would come in Wednesdays when all used books are on sale. It's the best deal there is and lots to choose from. While there be sure to say hi to Mr. Eko if you're not allergic to cats or pets. read more

A great old-school bookstore in a cool little town. Not a bunch of new books, but lots of old favorites and oddities, well-kept and organized. We picked out several, and wanted more. Yellow Springs is a certain kind of town. Small and sun-dappled, there's a relentless youthful friendliness about the place that many people call charming. For the rest of us, there's Dark Star Books. Paperbacks, Comic Books, First Editions - pick your poison, and they'll provide. Rows of precariously stocked shelves reach to the ceiling, stacks of paperbacks scale the walls and threaten to swallow the walkways. Everything is musty and dusty, crammed together and cluttered up... It's the ultimate antidote to the incessant pleasantness of Yellow Springs, AND it's home to the biggest, blackest shop cat that I have ever seen. The selection is eccentric, ranging from ancient anatomy textbooks to tattered comics to leather-bound classics. You won't look for long before you find something you need. For me, it was the maze of Science Fiction and Fantasy paperbacks... I could've thumbed through titles longingly for hours.It took a cup of coffee and a copy of "The Last Unicorn" for my date to finally convince me to leave. I was pleasantly surprised at the selection of comics in this bookstore. The owner was very friendly and accommodating. Most of their back issues were priced reasonably. However, the great news for me was they had their independent and small press books on sale for 40% off. I was able to find a lot of comics that are not common in my area for a great deal. The owner handed me his card and encourage me to contact him if I needed help completing my collection. I only wish I had more time to browse their selection of bargain books. read more

Every time I'm in Yellow Springs, I stop in and visit the staff and Mr. Eko. The selection of books is nice--I usually find something interesting floating around. I like the selection of comics available and the staff are always willing to lend a hand. Mr. Eko is my favorite part of the store! I always spend a few minutes giving him some love. I love the atmosphere of this establishment. There's an immense variety of fairly priced books and other items available, ranging from Miyazaki-themed memorabilia to cool bumper stickers. The best part of visiting is the massive black cat that lounges around the store. read more

Yellow Springs is such a hip little place offering hip little stores run by hip little people for hipsters young and old, so you pretty much know what to expect from Dark Star bookstore. Walking through the doors screams "we're too artistic to care too much", and that's exactly how the female (owner? manager?) interacted with paying customers -- like she was too cool to care about being friendly or saying "thank you". Also, it smells and looks like you are in a book hoarders basement. Tons of old books with brittle yellow pages just thrown about on shelves and in stacks on the floor, no organization whatsoever. For books that look a million years old and stink to high heaven, they were considerably overpriced when compared to the big-chain Half Price Books. But I guess visiting Dark Star is more for the Yellow Spring hipster experience than it is for the book browsing. I did really like one thing about this store: the lazy cat chilling in the overstuffed chair! That cat was adorable and never moved the entire time we were in there. Overall, it's fun glancing around when you're walking around Yellow Springs but Dark Star is just another below-average business in my opinion. read more

This place is not ADA compliant! I went to college in this area and I used to love this place. I would spend hours just browsing. However, I am visually impaired and now I have a guide dog. This bookstore has a cat resident. Which was totally fine with me (and my guide dog loves cats, so it didn't bother him either). The cat was curious about my dog, it was even playing peek-a-boo with him. For some reason the owners felt their cat was afraid (I have a cat. I know what scared cats look like. This cat was not scared.) They locked the cat in a bathroom or storeroom or closet, I don't know what it was. It's their cat; they can do what they want. However, after about 10 minutes, they asked me to leave. They said that if the cat was locked up for too long, it would get upset and start scratching and biting children (why do you have a cat like that in a public bookstore?). I told them that they didn't have to lock the cat up and that it is illegal to ask me to leave because of my service dog (unless he was being disruptive to other customers, which he wasn't). I am disappointed this place does not feel they have to follow federal law or treat people with disabilities equally. I guess we do not get to enjoy this quaint little bookstore. read more
