This is a cool and big used bookstore. There are some special editions and they do book binding…read moreand repair. There is a basement and then several floors to spend time checking out books. The service was really nice. There are a lot of older books and not as many newer books. I did think that the sections were well organized and alphabetized so it made it easier to search through. The prices were good as well. It's a nice place to come and browse and look for a hidden gem of a read.

The store seems small but a lot…read moreis crammed in, including some really kitschy cool decor (many discreet 'not for sale' signs to be noted) as well as a lot of items featuring cats that resemble Winnie, the shop cat. There also is a second floor which may be dedicated to a children's area; not positive as I didn't go up there. I am always on the lookout for old books as in 70-plus years, but not a whole lot in that department here as far as sorted items. There was a big stack of aged books but not catalogued. Believe me, I would have gladly pulled up a stool and reviewed the entire stack but as is often the case, the impatient husband was waiting in the car so I couldn't prolong my visit. I did grab a great sci-fi classic by Isaac Asimov; the book is pretty beat up but one dollar! Also spotted a tote bag featuring cats and books so that went home with me for sure. There are places to sit if you want to chill and read for a while. The lady behind the counter indicated that I could contact them for any old books I am searching for. Happy that they have Sunday hours and looking forward to a future visit.

Dark Star Book Store is located on the main street (Xenia Ave.) in Yellow Springs. I like the ease…read moreof entry (no stairs) and the outside tables for enjoying a drink or people-watching. Once inside, the store is packed with new and used books and comics from all genres. Additionally, they sell media like records, board games, notecards, stickers, bookmarks, magnets, pins, t-shirts, plushies, mugs, and coasters. There's a cat named Spooky who reigns over everything. The shelves are clearly labeled, and I imagine the capable staff can locate anything you ask for. The friendly cashier even gave me a free bookmark and told me the story about Spooky.

But I was just passing through Middletown, where I used to have family connections, and found myself walking along Central Avenue... when I saw the store-front for Crab Apple Books. An excellent supply of books - of all types! I am interested in history, history of science, and older books - and I found good examples of all, at very good prices. It is also a coffee shop, and it looks like it could be a mellow place to hang out for a while. Not too much happening on Central Avenue - but it would be cool if this were the start of life coming back to downtown Middletown!
