Now, in my time, I have been to a few of those, and they really are several grades above the kind of restaurants that I can afford to eat in on my own nickel. The food is awesome, the service is top-notch, and I didn't really need those life savings anyway.
Well, now that I have finally tried out the Lighthouse, I CAN dispute that issue. The staff didn't say a word, or even look at us askance, but my sweetie and I definitely felt under-dressed from the moment we walked in the door. The decor is extremely appealing (at least to me). The service was helpful, attentive, but not intrusive: the kind of treatment that's usually reserved for places where you can't eat for less than $100 for a couple, even without ordering any alcohol. And the view of the Niagara River is a delight. (I'm surprised that there aren't more restaurants and/or hotels along the river taking advantage of the view.) As for the food, it was superb. My sweetie couldn't stop raving about her fish and chips (even long after we had left the restaurant), and one bite into my burger I knew that this was a place where the food is really superior.
And, as an aside, yes, I can eat other things than burgers, and I have. I have eaten dishes on five continents, some of which still bring a smile to my lips when I think of them, like that time in Hong Kong when I had... but never mind. My point is that I'm not a complete Philistine. I just happened to be in the mood for a burger that day. Some time when I am under less stress, I'd like to go back and check out the Indian dishes. The aroma when we walked in was enticing, but I thought it best to go bland that day.
And, as an aside to the aside, yes, I do have a definite ranking in terms of burgers: at the bottom of the list are burgers from a college cafeteria, then burgers from convenience stores (except for Sheetz), then most fast food joints, then the kind of place where the prices are in integers, the prices are astronomical, and the quality of the food is better than most fast food joints, but definitely not worth the price they charge, then the top-of-the-line fast food joints (like the best locations of Harvey's, A&W, Triple O's, or Dairy Queen), then gourmet burger joints (the kind where you pay twice as much for the food as at fast food joints, but it's three times as good, so you're willing to pay that much), then Sheetz, then home-made burgers, and then, up to now, the top of the list has been Burgermeester in Amsterdam. I'm not sure that the burger I had at the Lighthouse quite managed to push Burgermeester off its pedestal, but it did push every other place down the list.
Was it cheap? Not at all. But we still managed to eat for less than I'd expect to pay at a place with this level of service. Was it good? Extremely.
But at the very least, now, if we are entertaining somebody we need to impress, I know exactly where to go.
