Generally, it'll list some interesting events, which are always on the tasteful side of things - take Lillian Boulette, jazz and blues music at the Cori Tap. In the style of it's parent magazine, it also has a long section on property, where the advertised houses are simply amazing - and thus wildly expensive - you really get a sense of how rich Clifton is once you have a browse. Like The Bristol Magazine, it's directed at affluent citizens and delivered for free distribution to most of the city's businesses. Worth a browse - you might find a good little gem of information.

I was instead confronted with a pretentious onslaught of up-market adverts, and superficial articles that made Clifton seem like a resort that was looking for wealthy investors. Not the type of magazine to sit and sip your coffee to over a long breakfast.

They claim this means they have the best distribution of all the local magazines, which is probably undoubted. The content is thus aimed at equivalent readers - classy clothes, adverts for expensive shops, private schools, health clubs and information about classy events like art exhibitions and salon openings. It's dotted around many businesses in the city, so you're bound to come across it sooner or later - I usually only take the time to flick through when I'm sat at the doctor's surgery (perhaps not the image they're trying to portray).

Taking the most recent edition as an example, featured on the front cover is "Bristol's Best Properties To Buy Or Rent". Well, Clifton's best properties to buy or rent, would be more accurate, given that 90% of the homes featured reside within it. Apart from that, the article itself is in fact not an actual article at all, but a huge advertisement for a few select estate agents, who have obviously paid to be featured. To be honest, the only thing I found worth reading in the current issue was an article about falcons. So there you go.

It's possible to find healthy stacks of these magazines in cafes and restaurants where it is permitted to take them away for free, even though there's a cover price... all very peculiar! The Cardiff publication "celebrates the best of city living". Published every three weeks, it includes features and classified adverts covering property, arts, dining and shopping, in Cardiff, Cowbridge and Penarth. The editorial is well written and the presentation of the content is colourful, and employs tasteful design principles. The only problem is that the stories that are featured don't usually tend to appeal to me as an individual, but occasionally they'll carry something of real interest.

There's a wonderful gallery/walkway and a huge basement, so the whole place is surprisingly big. We visited just after Christmas, which only added to its charm. Outstandingly friendly service, fantastic book signing events and a room dedicated to tranquil reading to name just a few. Voted Best Independent Bookshop, Mr B's Emporium isn't just a shop - it's an experience. My favourite thing to do of a lunch hour, is to pop along to the Bibliotherapy room at the top of the show, pick up a book, sit on the sofa and listen to the relaxing music. They also have a special booth equipped with tea, biscuits and headphones if you're looking for the ultimate in 'me time'. The shop spreads over three floors and covers a number of genres from cookbooks to psychology. These books are always sold at full price, so don't expect to get a bargain here, but you will find a carefully chosen selection of publications which you don't find on the highstreet.

This is the best 2nd hand book store I have ever been to inside the UK. The prices are pretty decent less than half price of the RRP in a lot of cases, including for almost brand new books. It's pretty fun to rummage around looking for something to read, and you feel pretty good too - I mean, it's recycling, right?! They also buy your unwanted books back from you, but be aware - they only take soft back fiction, which I discovered after hauling down my hard backs, manga books and nonfiction! Really worth a visit if you're in the area.
