31. Shish and Koobideh Platter

Ordered over the phone for lunch and it was ready when I picked it up. The koobideh and beef kabob had a nice smoky flavor and char to it. It's a little on the pricey side but the portion is so large and heavy that I split it into 2 meals. Solid lunch, would come again!

I had the chicken Kano plate. It came with your choice of a salad, hummus, or 2 other options. The chicken was moist. The rice was delicious - almost buttery-like. The service was alright. It was more like order up front and they bring your dish. It's a large restaurant but kinda dead inside.

Darband Restaurant is a slice of community in downtown San Diego where the staff and the frequent customers greet one another like family. Head over for a good plate of Persian food and steaming cups of tea. I walked in on an evening where several groups of people had come together to socialize over heaping plates of food and many cups of tea. The restaurant was polished and refined, the people were amicable, and I felt like I was taking a seat in someone's home. The staff was great in helping me figure out what I was in the mood for, and I ordered a koobideh kabob. While I waited for my food to arrive, I watched other patrons get up and help themselves to cups to tea at the tea station. When in Rome, do as the Romans do, they say. I got myself a cup of tea while I waited. It felt like hospitality! My koobideh kabob arrived, served with a generous helping of basmati rice. The koobideh kabob was delicious. The ground beef skewers were seasoned, well-done, and juicy. The charbroiled tomato and pepper were delicious and tender. I enjoyed the fluffy basmati rice which was accented by the delicate, floral notes of the saffron spice. On the side, I dipped the bread in the maust o khiar, the cool cucumber mint yogurt. And the tea was strong and bold. This dinner was very filling, and I was happy to stay awhile and enjoy my meal. I'll certainly stop by Darband when I'm in town again.

always great quality food and service is awesome, dosent matter how close to closing time i go they always welcoming and always tables and place is cleaned! definitely recommend their chenje and sultani with most musir. thank you

We just stopped by here for some Persian food while visiting San Diego. The food was amazing. The service was great. The prices were very fair considering where ever I've gone most Persian dishes are always 50$ or more. The ambiance was great too, very Persian vibes and a huge space. Would be nice to rent out the upstairs for a Persian tea party!

Super generous portions. Everything is well seasoned and authentically Persian. Beautifully appointed restaurant. Attentive staff. Broad and inspired menu. Extended hours of operation. Definitely worth checking out.

Below average food, very poor service. Afghan, not Persian. Kitchen staff argued with servers in Dari (Afghani) constantly.

I've been a regular at Grill House Cafe ever since a friend (who shall remain shamed--Farzad the…read moreGreat--for keeping it a secret for so long) finally introduced me to this incredible spot. While I used to come weekly, I now make the trip monthly since moving--and it's absolutely worth every mile. The star of the menu for me is the beef koobideh--juicy, perfectly seasoned, and consistently delicious. The quality of the food here is excellent across the board, and the flavors have made me a genuine fan of Persian cuisine, which I didn't grow up with but now count among my favorites thanks to this place. The service is always warm and attentive, adding to the welcoming, casual atmosphere. As a small but appreciated touch, the NHL Network is often playing on the TVs--something that makes the experience even more enjoyable for hockey fans like myself. Grill House Cafe is one of those rare finds that combines authenticity, great value, and friendly service. I now eat here more than the friend who introduced me to this fantastic restaurant. Highly recommended

However, I also ordered the bottled carbonated doogh (a yogurt drink) and was given a bottle that said best by January 2025 even though I ate here May 6, 2025. I did ask for the bottle to be taken off my tab and the elderly gentleman who was serving us agreed, but also said "for yogurt this doesn't matter." I realize that best by dates and expiration dates are differently, but I expect a bit more from a restaurant. I personally would hesitate to return. I also found the TV blaring to be a little distracting.

I ordered the beef soltani with zereshk polo for $38.36, tahdig with gheymeh for $15.60, and a small side of shallot dip for $2.08. The DoorDash menu is misleading. They should really indicate the portion sizes in ounces. The "small" was more like a sample size, about the size of a condiment container and maybe two bites at most. The flavor was not even good, so I am glad I did not order a larger portion. Overall, the food was very average. Nothing really stood out to me. Since I did order on DoorDash, I will say it was packaged nicely, however they did not provide utensils or sumac.

Sadaf absolutely delivers on flavor. I ordered the ghormeh sabzi, and the dish had the kind of…read moredepth I look for in Persian food: herbaceous, savory, and brightened by the unmistakable tang of dried lime. The portion size was generous, the saffron rice was a nice touch, and overall the food felt rooted in tradition rather than toned down. Where things fell apart was the pickup experience. I drove about 20 minutes and still ended up waiting around 30 more minutes inside before my order was ready. The bigger issue was not just the delay, but how poorly it was handled. The front of house seemed overwhelmed, communication was minimal, and there was little acknowledgment of the inconvenience. So for me, Sadaf is a place where the kitchen clearly outshines the service. The food was good enough that I would order again, but the pickup process needs serious improvement.

They have a grill and bakery that was extremely busy. The meat and cheese department looked really nice as well. Again, their features cater to Persian, Iranian and Mediterranean cooking. Their prices are a little higher than Stater Bros., Vons, Sprouts, Aldi or Walmart but the FRESHNESS and QUALITY makes paying a few cents more an easy thing to do. Ordered chicken shawarma and beef and chicken shawarma plates with a dolma appetizer. I received two beef and chicken shawarma plates, a little annoying since the wife didn't want beef, but whatever. Dolmas are covered in some weird, gross looking sauce. I couldn't tell if it was congealed fat or what? They tasted fine though, I suppose. Nothing special, but average. Beef and chicken shawarma plates came without any sauce...like a classic garlic sauce or tahini. Made the meal VERY dry, as the meat was dry. Overall flavor was good though. Overall 3/5 stars. With a garlic dip, probably up to 4 stars for sure.
