(Our first experience with Portside was when we wrapped props around an unmarked mooring on our way in to Portside Marine - Peter not only "rescued" us but they reconditioned the prop in record time despite heading into the 4th of July weekend - KUDOS well beyond expectation.) Our dock neighbors at our marina all raved about Portside Marine despite that the marina offers similar services. The raves set an expectation that was really high - our experience(s) have consistently exceeded that expectation. Can I buy more stars? :)

The Marina is well kept and has a lot to offer such as extra large public dock area, free parking, close to walking trails, extra safe security with locking gates for boat owners and much more. For people who rent dock space here, electric and water is available. Spaces vary in size and determine where your boat is located, starting with small 8 - 12 foot dingy's docked almost on the land in 3 feet of water to the deep water spots where we kept our 48 foot Ta Chiao. On a different note, this is a great place to come, sit and watch the sun set. There are amazing views from the main dock, you will not be disappointed. Bring a picnic or a bottle of wine and relax under the gazebo and take in a beautiful sunset with the sailboats as part of the backdrop. Seaport also has a large condominium complex and a couple businesses. The only thing it is missing is a spot for food or convenience items. Remember to stop prior to arriving. There is nothing like being an experienced boater, it takes time to figure out the system but when you do there is nothing like it. The first thing I would like to bring up is "change," no one likes to have their free meal ticket taken away so they write sour yelp reviews. The ramp is now private and people love to complain about not letting everyone and their brother congest the ramp during the busy summer season. I find it to be an upgrade. Now the people who pay there dues to be part of a good marina can get in and out of the water faster, which means more time at the beach. It sucks having to be the guy who tells all the idiots to please park your car straight because your not the only one who wants to go to the beach today, so give the parking lot guy a break. We all know there is plenty of people who either don't care or feel like they own the joint and park sideways across 2 spots. The parking lot is small, park in one spot, easy, done. I've enjoyed some great boating days taking off at Essex Marine, I put my boat in the water, park my car and I'm off to the beach, or I drop a line in and catch a 40 inch large mouth bass out near the back side of Cranes beach. It takes a little bit of know how to do it right and safely. If your new to boating, ask a friend to go with you and show you the ropes. There are rules and unwritten rules out there that only come with experience and knowledge of the area and it starts at the marina where you drop your boat in. People get frustrated and complain about everything but they don't take the time to learn how to use the system. Be a smart boater, do a bit of research and go have fun! The service makes boating hassle-free joy, and keeps my hull and motor out of the water when they are not being used in the summer and safe/dry in the winter. And the Essex River is a great point of departure for Crane and Wingaersheek Beaches, Plum Island and all the attractive shores of Ipswich Bay. This off-season the shop installed a new outboard and helped me sell the old one. While I have read the earlier reviews and sympathize with the challenge of change, I have had nothing but clear and helpful interactions with owner Curt and his capable mechanics, Dave and Austin.

Docking was a bit treacherous, as the layout of the docks are a bit tricky to navigate depending on which boats are where, but if you're skilled, you can manage without any on-deck help. The showers are decent, but not super fresh and clean. It's nice that they have them ! (Make sure you turn the lights on all the way for however long you'll be in the shower, as they are timed and will go out on you otherwise!) Not an awesome place to stay, but fine if you're traveling through for a night or two.

So I'm not an avid boater and wasn't buying a massive yacht - what do I know about reviewing boat shops? I know this: I thought a big boat shop like this wouldn't have time for a rookie with a tiny boat like myself, but they always did. They always had time to help me out and give it to me straight. I made a reservation for 2 nights through the online form and never received a confirmation. When I called to check on it, they thought I was coming for 1 night. It all got squared away on the phone- then I sent an email reconfirming for 2 nights (it's not their practice to give written confirmation) I receive a note back that all was OK. Upon arrival we were escorted to our mooring. (no problem) the following morning while we were enjoying breakfast we felt a thud... it was the launch. She wanted to know if we were planning to stay another night (hello......) When we replied yes, she told us we needed to move (right away) as we were not on a transient mooring the customer whose mooring we were on was at the dock. I told her that we were placed on this mooring - she graciously apologized and said "mistakes happen" as I made my way up the damp deck in my pajamas and sock. That wasn't super impressive, but not unusual for the industry, so they still get a 3 star... sadly.
