Can't comment on the quality or value of his upholstery as he never completed any work. I contacted him via email and the followed up about a week later with a call since he never replied to email. When I called he abruptly told me to text him images and I asked if it was the same number he was calling. He said yes and rattled off the number at lightening speed in case I didn't know what number I had dialed. I sent him a couple of images and expected a quote fairly quickly. A week later I hadn't heard anything and sent a follow up text and still have heard no reply to the email, phone call or two texts. I guess business is so good that he doesn't need any extra work. Dan did a fantastic job replacing the six large cushions on my couch. The couch is a wedge-shaped sectional which I'm sure made the task quite difficult. No straight lines, all curves. I don't know how he did it but he did. I highly recommend him. read more

I paid $300 for new foam cushions on my leather couch on Feb 28th and was told he would have them for me on March 3rd or 4th. I came back to pick them up on March 13th and he still didn't have them and he would go to pick them up on March 16th. I returned on March 18th and once again another excuse and no cushions and told me he would pick them up and promised once again to have them on March 20. Now the 20th is here and he tells me the supplier is closed. I requested a refund and he said he does not have the money. Dan used to be an honest and reliable guy at one time, not anymore. If I could give a zero I would. We contracted our boat seats, bolsters and padding in our boat to be done for a fair price and a 2 week period. We had the material we just needed the padding and professional installation. Well, the 2 weeks came and went (by far) and within 1 trip out with the boat the staples are sticking out of the upholstery. Terrible work. The material is pleated in the wrong spots. Time and money down the drain. We now have to find a new professional and spend more money and more time away. read more

I don't recommend this place. Very slow with zero communication. Took 2 days to finish a job that he said would be done within a couple of hours. I call him and he says he wrote my number that I gave him twice wrong. He then blamed the weather and said he was miserable working on my car and how disgusting the panels were. I know the panels are bad thats why my cars at your shop and as a customer I don't care about how you're feeling get it done when you say it'll be done. On top of that the fabric he used was dirty and smelled awful. I think it looks down right awful. I feel sick that I had to spend that much money to have a run around and be so dissatisfied with the outcome. Sorry to have to report this, but this place is to be avoided. Dan didn't quite a price, just took some styrofoam cushion inserts, cut them, and then "$60." Took him all of 20 mins. Just cut two pieces of foam and stapled some of that batting in them. Even expensive attorneys aspire to $180/hr! And, the cushions are too thick for the covers. Seems like a real professional would have asked some questions. This fellow seemed completely uninterested in doing a good job. Really disappointed. Only gave 1 star because he did the job right away. Did it poorly and unprofessionally, but did the job right away. read more

I gave Dan a deposit for $500 to redo the all the seats in my Niece's 2006 Ford Mustang from cloth to leather. I don't dig this guy's style - I went to him to ask for a quote to compare to another upholstery shop here in Santa Cruz and he immediately told me he didn't have time to even consider working on the project I had in mind, not to mention the harsh words after that... When I had asked for a general idea of cost his response was "I can't fit you into my schedule & I'm really busy at the moment" ---That just goes to show the amount of customer service already lacks on the phone... He then began to slander almost every other upholstery business in Santa Cruz County - I wouldn't go to him just based on his UN-PROFESSIONALISM. Not to mention he flat out told me that HE DIDN'T HAVE TIME FOR ME... aren't you in a service profession?? Don't you need customer's to provide that service too?? Dan strung me along for over 5 months in reupholstering my couch, and never even came close to finishing the job. I finally gave up and asked for my fabric and money back. He cut up half the fabric and had barely anything to show for it. He returned not 1 penny of my $700. He is a CROOK and his business is a SHAM. When we got back from a vacation in July 2015 one of the cushions to our new brown leather couch was out in the driveway, shredded, and partially burned! The young lady who was house-sitting had "no idea how it happened". In subsequent days we found a lot more evidence of an out-of-control party while we were gone! "Sandra" (not her real name) will not be doing any more sitting for us. I wish I could give her a Yelp review ! Dan came to our rescue. He repaired the cushion to an exact match to the other two. He did it promptly, for less than his quote, and knew exactly where to source the replacement leather, foam pad, zipper, and backing. We picked our our fabric and gave a $500 deposit for 3 window seat cushions to be made - a 2 month job. That was February 24, 2021. Called Dan after 4 months, he said the fabric had arrived but due to his back injury, he had not been able to make the cushions. Was told to call after June 16 - he was getting a procedure to help his back - same story as all these others I'm reading (wish I had checked him out before hand or listened to that still, small, quiet voice as I looked around the fire hazard of a shop). This gentleman has disappointed me over and over again. I can't even count how many times he has told me he will have my 12 chairs finished next week. Now he has been evicted from his Scotts Valley location. I can't even get the seats to my chairs to take them somewhere else. This has been a most disappointing experience. And now I am out my $400 deposit on top of it all. I have 41 guests coming for Easter and NO chairs. I would tell you not to go there but I don't think you could even if you wanted to as I don't know where he has gone. It's no wonder that he lost my ticket and couldn't find the cushion I asked him to recover, then, he said he never did the job because he misplaced my ticket. But, he assured me that he could get it done the next day. The next day I called him to see if my cushion was ready to pick up and he said he didn't do the job because he couldn't find the ticket that had the information he needed. He told us for almost 6 months that our 3 week reupholstery job would be done in about one week and that he had our love seat and chair "torn apart" sitting in his workplace. After 6 months, we finally go fed up and went to pick up our things. He did return them to us. They were not touched at all by him and returned in the original condition we dropped them off. I needed a long bench seat and back made for a wall bench in my dining room. I read all Dan's great yelp reviews, and even my contractor recommended Dan. Even when I went to meet with Dan, he seemed very knowledgeable, recommended the kind of fabric to use, and called to order the fabric while I was in the store. I gave him a deposit of several hundred dollars on my credit card for the materials, and he said the job would take 2 weeks. The rest of my interaction with Dan was like a broken record. 2 weeks came and went, and so I called Dan to find out the status of my order. He had not even started it, but said, again, it would be done in 2 weeks. At the end of this 2nd "2 week" period I called and told Dan my credit card statement would be due shortly, and I could not in good faith pay the deposit that was on the card if there was no proof of any work being done. He was very upset and promised it would be done in a few days. I did not waste a third phone call to him, but instead, a few days later called my credit card company to dispute the deposit charges. Have never heard from Dan about my job, why I refuted the deposit, or even an "I am sorry" I would never, ever recommend Dan for any upholstery job. read more

I wish I had a before picture of my couch. My cats clawed it and peed on it for years, then I just put it in storage for three years. Wishing to one day recover it, the chair and two ottomans. One ottoman I got from the thrift store, did not even match my set. Now it all matches and looks amazing. He even made me covers so my dog can sit on my better than new furniture! I left a $100 check as a deposit on 3/13/2020 for Dan to repair the leather seat in my car. He said he would order the material and have it in about a week. After about 10 days I hadn't heard anything from him, but I noticed then that he had already cashed my check on 3/13, the same day I gave it to him. I spoke with him and asked if he had ordered the material, he said no because the manufacturers of the material were closed with the pandemic. I felt uncomfortable since he already cashed the check but hadn't ordered, and realized that it would probably be a very long time before my seat would be done -- so I asked for my deposit back. He told me he didnt have it but would get it to me by the next Monday. Monday came and he said he still didn't have but would by Thursday. This has happened 3 times now. I delivered a letter to him on 4/3 requesting my deposit back in writing and havent heard from him since. I haven't used Dan's services before, and it looks like I made a big mistake leaving him the deposit. Along with others who have posted about his service, I have serious doubts about his honesty and don't believe I will ever get my deposit back. read more

HE'S BAD NEWS! He took a $1000 deposit from us on a $2500 job in January 2021, and promised to order the material needed for our reupholster of our kithen nook, with the job to start In early March 2021. He then as evicted from his store front on Scotts Valley Drive, in March 1, 2021, however he told us he was setting up shop somewhere else in Santa Cruz and to give him another month or so to get set up. We waited, we texted, we called, and he still came up with excuses. He, then, by the summer of 2021, even arranged a date to come to our house and to do the job in our 2-car garage. We prepped the area, removed the kitchen nook and he did a no-show (although right up until the day before!) He kept saying he has to get cortisone for his back to relieve pain and couldn't work. We ask for him to at least give us the material he was to have purchase (yeah...right!). By the end of the summer, we gave up, purchased the material and found someone else to do the job. I left my 4 dining room chair cushions on August 28, 2019 and was told by Dan they would be ready in about a week and a half because of1 the holiday. JOKE. OK I just picked them up to day October 18, 2019.! I do not recommend Dan's Upholstery because it should have not taken 2 months to complete this job. Also, it was hard to get Dan on the phone for updates. The worst is that I finally got him on the phone to advise I had a party at my house on Saturday October 12, 2019. I contacted him on the previous Friday October 4, 2019, finally talked to him on Wednesday October 9, 2019 and was advised to pick up the cushions as is (how I dropped them off on Aug. 28th.) on Saturday October 12, 2019 after 9:30 a.m. I arrived at 10:30 he wasn't there. I got him on the phone, he was at Safeway and asked me to wait for his return in about 10 minutes! OK. I waited, he didn't show up. !!! I had to leave to get ready for my family celebration. I went to Dan's Upholstery on the following Monday October 14, 2019 for an explanation of the problem and was told my cushions would be ready by the end of the week October 18, 2019. I must advise DO NOT go to this shop! Dan is not organized and not a good businessman at all. He seems to be in over his head all the time. My cushions were finally ready for pickup on October 18, 2019. When I arrived he still had work to do on them. I waited about 15 minutes. His credit card reader was down so he said. I offered to come back on the following Monday to make my final payment and he was totally unaccepting.! That simply wouldn't work for him. He didn't trust me to come back to pay. He thinks his customers are like him, UNTRUSTWORTHY!!. What an horrible horrible place. Stay Away. My experience was a big ZERO. There is no oversight or care for customer here. This upholstery shop saved my couch. My son peed all over the foam cushion . I further ruined it by being brainless and trying to wash and dry it. YES in the dryer. I know right. I went in with my cushion in a trash bag Dan was able to measure and supply me with a new one and the batting he of course assembled the batting around the foam. It took less than 15 minutes from walk in to walk out,not to mention another patron came in while he was filling my order. Dan was very pleasant and easy to talk to. Seems like an honest guy for honest work. The shop has all sorts of fabrics for reupholstering I was tempted to do my furniture but I just bought it 1 1/2 years ago. Although good workmanship was experienced previously, our recent experience has been horrifying. A deposit was made 10 months ago on a chair to be reupholstered. He was shop was closed for less than a month due to Covid. He continued to lie to us for the remainder of that period saying first he was waiting on material and then he had the material but after several months of lying, he admitted that the material was not order and eventually told us that he didnt have the money to place the order and I had to purchase the material myself and have it delivered to his shop. I went to his shop almost weekly over the 10 month period and I continued to be lied to. He finally delivered the chair and the quality was terrible. He promised to come and pick up the chair and replace it but has not done so, He has been evicted from his location due to non payment of rent and does not return phone calls to resolve the situation, Lies! But he completely remade my leather sofa bed with beautiful high quality leather. It was a difficult sofa to replace due to size and shape, so we sought out Dan. The results are beautiful. read more

Dan is such a great person to work with on any upholstery project. He has reinvented and customized a brand new sleeper sofa for us. We needed a sleeper sofa but didn't like the style. When Dan was finished, we had a mid century modern looking couch that didn't resemble the former traditional sleeper we bought. Awesome!! He also is making custom outdoor cushions for our concrete (uncomfortable) fire pit seating area. Cannot recommend him enough!
