We have had two (so far!) great experiences with Darrell and his business Butler's handyman…read moreservice. The first time I was desperate. A home inspection that came in late required us to put in handrails on two stairways. We are new to the community and could find no one. Darrell gave me a quote and came and did the work. His work was solid. He was professional and done quickly. My husband and I were so grateful! Because the work had been so good on the handrails, we talked to him about a couple of other odd jobs and our new home he installed a pantry, medicine cabinet, and was honest with us about the fact we would not be able to install a garbage disposal. In addition he did a few other odd jobs while he was here. His work is always top-notch, he is pleasant to deal with, and we have been more than satisfied. I would say that you get what you pay for. His work isn't cheap, but his quality is outstanding and he is very good to work with. We are in the process of having him come back and do more work. He is helping us make our house a home!

I unfortunately hired Randy in June of 2022 to complete a renovation project on a rental property…read morethat included repairing the front porch and getting two units into rent ready condition. We entered into a standard agreement in which our company paid material costs directly and issued payment for half the labor upfront. The project was expected to be completed within approximately one month, but what followed was an unending series of excuses that extended the timeline several months. By November, he made the claim that the project was essentially completed, and he was only two days away from finishing up. He then asked for an additional installment payment equal to 50% of the second half of the labor cost, which we paid to him. When called four days later to confirm the completion of work he stated that he had a heart attack and he wouldn't be finishing the project (in addition to this claim, he added that two of his sons, upon hearing the news of his heart attack, got into a car wreck on their way to the hospital and were taken to the ICU themselves). We then immediately scheduled an inspection of the property, which uncovered a trivially amount of work had been completed (see pictures attached). The entire time he had been giving updates on the progress of the project, yet none of items in the scope of work were even close to be finished. We initially attempted to work with him to ensure the remainder of the project was completed in a swift manner, but he blocked our phone number. We then reached out to him via a secondary phone (unknown to him) asking for his availability to complete work on a property of ours in Dekalb, to which he replied that he was. You can make your own conclusions about his claim of health issues, but I believe the answer is clear. Under no circumstances would I hire him, and I hope that this serves as a warning for anyone who is thinking of employing him. If for some reason, you are still considering his services, I would be more than happy to connect to provide further details. TLDR: Do not hire Randy Smith of Sycamore / Dekalb, IL (aka Smith Handyman Services or RJ Contractor). We contracted with him to complete a home renovation. He claimed the project was two days from being complete and received $5,400 in labor payments. However, trivial progress was made and he refused to finish the job.

However, it is just one person and the TV weighs 75 pounds so I offered to help. 3 hdmi cables ripped most likely when Tv was taken off wall so holes could be re-drilled. I should have removed the cables before he came by to fix but didn't and I'm not sure if I helped him take the Tv down the second time or not but I may have. He hesitently strung new hdmi cables (mine) back through the wall but when I tested the ports later one was damaged. Regardless, from the moment we started the process earlier that day I said my main priority was getting my Tv mounted safely. He then blamed me for wanting to help (I didn't but he came alone and I was worried about the TV) and said he "didn't want to step on my toes" and ask me to remove the cables. That's either a lie or a very risky way to do business. My tv could've been rendered unusable. Yes it was our mistake but one that shouldn't have been made. Fortunatly for now it seems like it's only 25% less useable but he blamed me and offered no compensation. I also noticed my stand alone freezer he unplugged was not plugged back in so about $100 in food was wasted as well. So I would not recommend him and would go with a different company that is less likely to make mistakes and more likely to own up to them if they do make them.

We needed two new boxes and ceiling fans installed in top floor bedrooms. I was an electrician early in my life so I know very well how difficult it is to run conduit in a shallow attic space. He understood clearly how I wanted the wiring done and switches placed. He did an impeccable job on this very difficult project. I am very impressed and would recommend him without reservation.
