Strange instruments can make…read moregreat music Two questions. The first, who is Charlies Ogle? Charlie is a maker and seller of viola da gambas. In fact the largest purveyor of viola da gambas in the country. The second question?, What exactly is a viola da gamba? The viola da gamba is a musical instrument, actually a family of musical instruments that are superficial similar in appearance if not in sound to modern strings. The bass , which is about the size of a cello is the most common and the usual solo instrument but trebles, tenors and the large violone also exist. The gambas showed up in the late 1400's, about the same time as the modern violin and cello but are not an ancestral to the modern strings. The two families seemed to have developed contemporaneously and then for some reason the gamba fell out of favorite around 1750. Some absolutely incredible music was composed for it, music that is now usually performed on modern strings. In spite of the similar appearances some important differences between the two families exist. First of all the gambas have movable frets, the modern cello has no frets. The gambas have six strings, cello four. The bow is held with an underhand grip with the gamba, over hand with the cello. The gamba also use gut strings, cello or violin occasional gut but usually synthetic strings. Gambas were usually played in families during the Renaissance but then during the Baroque the bass became the solo instrument and the smaller instruments become scarce. It's difficult to verbalize sound but the timbre of the gambas tend to be softer, less refined and more transparent than the modern strings. Well suited for the polyphony of early music, the sound becomes extremely obvious once heard. Of course you just can't walk into any music store and get a gamba, you have to find a maker. Charlie not only makes fine gambas but also Baroque violins and cellos and has a workshop in Beijing where he manages to produce fine beginner instruments at a reasonable price. Reasonable at least for a anachronistic musical instrument that virtually nobody plays anymore. Charlie also has books, bows, cases and an endless supply of extremely poor musical jokes on his website. He does not have a store but does occasionally appear at various early music shows throughout the country. I have met him numerous times and he always has been helpful and friendly. Once he spend considerable time with me explaining the best way to adjust, tune and tie the damnable frets. Other times we just talk about technique and interpretation of the the music. I purchased both a treble and tenor gamba from him and once I got over the initial difficulties of adjustment, love both instruments. Charlie is obviously not in it just for the money. So if you like music, history or better yet musical history check out his web site. Music has been around for a long time and did not always sound like it does today. Poor Dan (now known as Dan's Music) entertained us by taking EVERY guitar we asked for down for us to try out. I did evenually buy my first guitar from Trombetti's in 1979? It was a Vantage solid body electric with coil pick-ups. I think I paid $279.00 at the time. Hey, I was just out of college and had student loans to deal with!) To this day, it remains one of my favorite guitars. Later bought a Peavy AX electric and practice amp when Al relocated to West Shore Road/Oakland Beach Ave. The first really good local music store!

It turned out to be the "new" owner, Larry. (New because he became the owner 10 years ago, and Luca Music has been around since I used to shop at Almacs... ) The building is the exactly the same as it was in the 80s and it's well kept, so for me it's like stepping back in time when I took music lessons here. Pretty fantastic to have something so well preserved for the next generation. I told Larry what I was looking for. He did a great job showing me my options and while he showed the the nicest version of what I was looking for, he in no way pressured me to spend extra. He got me just what I wanted and even made me a nice bundle offer that I am confident got me the best deal around. He even threw in extra after the sale. We did business and then he helped carry my purchase to the car. So while we tend to forget the Small Business so often in lieu of box stores and online shipping, there's something about the time and care and appreciation I felt today at Luca Music. I would not hesitate to return or recommend.

Now they have morphed into a little something more, selling funcos and t-shirts, and some snacks. When I went to the store only had a couple of people in it, and the selection of items was limited. The clerk was nice, but there wasn't anything I was interested it, other than browsing, and nothing really caught my eye.

I went here with a $26 gift card. The other associate on the floor tried to help by talking with the gift card company but they didn't reverse the transaction at all. In the end the manager came back from his break, gave me a spiel that we would make the transaction with my credit card and he would process a return for the amount and apply the balance to a gift card; this sounded like a clever workaround at the time but after a few days I never got the refund. He even gave me a "10% discount" for the trouble but jokes on me, it was just a scam and they got me to pay twice for the same objects! To make matters worse, he didnt even give me the return receipt, and he took the original gift card so now I definitely can't dispute it. So essentially, they kept my $26 from my gift card, and kept the $26 from my credit card as well. I don't blame the original associates because this is a payment system error and the second associate who assisted me also tried his best and even offered to help pay for the objects with his own money but the manager just gave me the runaround and made it sound pretty just to make sure I wouldn't complain and ensured that I wouldn't be able to call later to dispute. No wonder the store is in such disarray. Never going here again. 0 stars if I could.
