was a patient with Dr. Daniel Nelson about 10 years ago. He did 4 implants for me. 2 years ago my implant #14 had fallen out. As a result Dr.Nelson voluntarily gave me $1950 as compensation. This year my #3 implant has also fallen out. Having 2 implants fall out is very RARE according to the other dentists that I spoke with. He did poor work. Dr. Nelson does a great job of explaining each procedure that can be taken and what he recommends. He is very thorough in collecting information about you before coming up with all available alternatives for treatment (and also communicating if you need treatment at all). I also appreciate how transparent he is on estimated costs before doing any treatment. I additionally appreciate that he does a zoom appointment before meeting in person to make things more efficient and does the zoom appointment at no charge. For the gum graft itself, Dr. Nelson did a terrific job of working with my pain tolerance on taking local anesthesia such as deep breaths beforehand, explaining exactly what he will do, and placing it in a speed that matches my comfort. The procedure itself was complete smooth sailing from there, he provides detailed post op instructions and contact information for assistance between the surgery and follow up. read more

In March 2024, I sought 3 consultations for a gum graft procedure. I suffered from receding gum line across my lower front teeth. Dr Nelson was the most professional, with careful explanation about the procedure, risks, and alternatives. I clearly understood every step of the process, and he answered my every concern with patience and thoughtfulness. He is very aware about how frightening the prospect can be. Dr Nelson is amazing and just the nicest person. He does not even charge for video consultations. In this day and age and especially for Bay Area, that has got to be unheard of. His time is valuable but will do video consult before seeing you in person. He takes his time with patients answering all questions and does not push for surgical route unless he truly thinks necessary. Over the past four years, Dr. Nelson has completely rebuilt the gum tissue on every tooth in my mouth using tissue grafted from my pallet. He has given me my smile back. I'm so grateful for his deft skill. I feel like I have had a cosmetic procedure because teeth without gums are not cute, and of course the health of my mouth is improved as well. Dr. Nelson is fantastic. I have had 4 gum transplant surgeries with him for recessed gums, one each year for each quadrant of my mouth. Obviously I kept going back to him because I thought he was a great periodontist. I spent years putting the surgery off because I was afraid of how invasive it would be or how much it would cost. And I doubted that there was such an easy solution to the problem. I wish I hadn't delayed as long as I did to find Dr. Nelson. Everything was so much easier than I was worried it would be. The surgeries went really well. The recovery time was really not that bad and it wasn't that painful. The results look great. My gums are in great health again. And the sensitivity to hot and cold has pretty much gone away. It was a lot less painful than I was worried it was going to be. He's very professional, explains everything very clearly, and he's very kind and gentle. There were no gimmicks with the billing or unexpected charges; he was very straight-forward about everything. His office took care of the insurance billing and made it really easy for me. Hopefully I won't need any more gum surgery for a really long time, but if I do, I wouldn't consider going to anyone other than Dr. Nelson. Also, he has a very good protocol now for seeing patients given the current COVID19 situation to protect the office staff and me. They do a temperature check and oxygen level check and are fully protected with PPE. I felt very safe there. There's no need to wait to see him till things get back to normal. read more

Dr. Nelson was recommended by my dentist because i needed three gum grafts done (receding gums). Consult was great and I did my research first (actually interviewed him and then messaged some of his prior patients I found on Yelp) and everyone recommended him, so I went for it. I am pleased to report that both of my gum grafting procedures that he had done in the past year were smooth and I couldn't be happier with the results. The nervousness prior to the first one was gut-wrenching, but Dr. Nelson is so calm and confident that it rubbed off on me. The second graft was even easier than the first one, even though it was a bigger area. Pain was minimal and healing quick. I am eating normally and it hasn't been two weeks yet. He has done such a great job surgically that I will be his patient for as long as I have awful gums. His staff knows me by name and is pleasant to work with; I also love that they play classical music during surgery. They even squeezed me in for a 15-min appointment to adjust my Invisalign trays to feet my new gum line. Dr. Nelson is a great clinician who performed a grafting procedure on me due to my receding gums. The procedure was thankfully uneventful and was very easily tolerated. I had some tissue grafted from my palate and transplanted to where my gums receded. Dr. Nelson offers an option where he used my own blood to make platelet rich plasma (PRP) to apply on my surgical sites to aid in faster healing. I've had grafting done before without PRP and it did take a little longer to heal than it did this time around. The pain experienced was little to none. His staff was so easy to work with. Dr. Nelson has been treating my complex case for the last year. During that time he has been extremely informative and honest about what is the best possible course of treatment along with what all available options are. He is also very gentle with deep cleanings and makes you feel at ease in the chair. I tend to get nervous at the dentist due to past experiences and he has always ensured that he talks me through what procedures and areas he is treating. I have had gum recession since I was a teenager as a result of taking a prescription for valproic acid for years, the side effect of which is gum recession. I was referred to Dr. Nelson for gum graft surgery - I had five teeth that had exposed roots and needed grafting. Dr. Nelson did it in two procedures - three grafts during the first procedure on the left side and two grafts during the second procedure on the right. This is to say that the results are outstanding. The donor tissue area on the roof of my mouth healed perfectly and the grafts healed so well that you cannot tell that they aren't the original tissue. Yeah it was a bit painful but don't be a baby. It's not that bad. Dr. Nelson offers sedation and I can say that recovery was not nearly as bad as I imagined it would be. A few days of taking pain relievers and eating soft foods basically. PS. Previously I had consulted with a different periodontist who had recommended a graft using cadaver tissue (called Alloderm). His selling point was that the healing process would be much easier with no donor tissue being harvested from the roof of the mouth, although results would be inferior. Now that I'm done with the procedures, I would highly recommend taking the donor tissue route and avoiding the Alloderm. Why? Because the harvesting and healing of the roof of the mouth wasn't nearly as bad as my imagination made me think it would be. And the results are incredible. read more

I would strongly suggest getting a second opinion before having any work done by Dr Nelson. He recommended I have a gum graft done on my entire mouth, all my teeth, top and bottom. I saw 3 other periodontists and none of said I needed this. Each only recommended from 2 to 3 teeth. I ended up only needing a graft in one small area of my bottom jaw. read more

3 Years ago, I first went to see Dr. Nelson because I was concerned about my receding gum lines. After a thorough examination, I had scaling and root planing done by Dr. Nelson himself. Since then, I've had a dental implant and a gum graft done and he did a superb job on both. He was patient, kind, and understanding throughout the process starting during the pre-op appointment and continuing on to the surgery day as well as post-op. Out of all of the people I have known in the dental profession, Dr. Nelson is the best I have ever met, and I seriously doubt I will ever meet someone better. I recently had to get a gum graft and Doctor Nelson was recommended to me by my regular dentist. The procedure did not sound like much fun despite the assurances of many of my friends who'd had the same work done at other dentists. Prior to the surgery, Doctor Nelson was very thorough and took his time to explain exactly what would happen and how long it would take. His care and professionalism went a long way to calming my nerves when I laid back in the chair and he got to work. The procedure was nowhere near as nerve wracking as I thought it would be. I was in no pain and Doctor Nelson and his assistant Janice kept me in the loop on everything that was happening. The great thing about Doctor Nelson is that he is really responsive to his patients! I emailed him a few times during my recovery to ask questions and he got back to me within minutes with all the information I needed. Last year, my regular dentist suggested that I see a periodontist for my gum recession. I went for a consultation to a periodontist suggested by someone, and he suggested osseous surgery on each of the four quadrants in my mouth (four operations). However, I did not like that periodontist, because I did not feel that he was thorough enough, and also his price was quite a bit higher than what the insurance said was customary. After hours of researching and calling periodonists from the insurance website, I decided to try Dr. Nelson, because he had excellent education and credentials and because his office assistant was incredibly helpful. So, I went for a second consultation; this time with Dr. Nelson. I was delighted and amazed with how thorough, patient, and pleasant Dr. Nelson was. He also suggested osseous surgery in the four quadrants. So far, I have had two surgeries, one in November and one in February, both with Dr. Nelson. He did an outstanding job in both, and I am a happy camper. Meanwhile, I sent my son and my wife to him for various periodontal issue, and they were just as delighted.
