I had been suffering under the care of another psychiatrist for a year and a half. Finally out of…read moredesperation I googled the best psychiatrist in NYC and Dr. Mekles came up. That description of him is very accurate. He is without a doubt the best doctor I have ever dealt with. The attention you get from him is outstanding. If you're experiencing a problem, you can be sure you will speak to him that same day. His office staff is just as attentive. I highly recommend him. You can be sure you will get the best care possible. Thank you Dr. Mekles for helping me get back to myself again anxiety-free.

My experience with Dr. Brian Pell deserves to be publicly documented so others know exactly what…read morethey are walking into. I booked an appointment specifically for an ADHD assessment, clearly stated as such. That was the entire purpose of the visit. Yet, during the call, Dr. Pell casually informed me that they are not conducting ADHD assessments at this time and may resume, possibly in January or February of next year. This immediately raised a red flag: if you are not offering the service, why accept an appointment for it? Why bill insurance for something you never intended to provide? The entire interaction lasted 18 minutes, and not a single part of it resembled an evaluation. Instead, we spent the bulk of the time discussing my career. He asked about my former psychiatrist's nationality; he seemed very interested in why he didn't take insurance "as a Black doctor" (which I perceive as a common conflation between race and poverty). He then asked only two quick, surface-level questions about why I was seeking an ADHD assessment. Then in the same breath that he told me they are not doing assessments, he also told me that I probably do not have ADHD. He said this despite the fact that I was coming to him for a second opinion after already completing a comprehensive, legitimate ADHD evaluation with a diagnosis from an actual specialist. (I did not share I was coming in for a second opinion, as I didn't want it to be biased). He provided no testing, no structured questions, no clinical methodology, nothing that even remotely resembled evidence-based practice. The whole thing felt dismissive, and frankly, like a complete waste of my time. I left the appointment feeling misled and deeply uncomfortable, as insurance had been billed for a service that was never delivered. If you are seeking serious mental health care, diagnostic clarity, or responsible clinical practice, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This experience felt unhelpful and entirely out of alignment with what any patient should expect from a licensed provider.

In each case, I've been impressed by the quality and consistency of her work. I am selective about where I refer patients, and have felt consistently confident entrusting individuals and couples to Laura's care. Laura is a highly skilled couples therapist, family therapist, and individual therapist in New York City, with particular strength in working with relationship dynamics, communication issues, and complex family systems. Patients I've referred to her have reported meaningful progress, especially in the areas of couples therapy and relationship counseling. She brings a thoughtful, structured, and effective approach to her work. I feel confident recommending her to individuals, couples, and families seeking high-quality therapy with an experienced LCSW in NYC.

I've never written a review but I'm really compelled to speak out. I'm legally blind and I went on…read morethe Psychology Today site, searched for a blind allied psychiatrist and found Dr. Packer. I only saw her via telehealth and she was already weird and off putting. She had a camera set up off to the side so I never saw her face just the side of her face. It's hard to share stuff about yourself when you're not looking at them in the eye. She did telehealth over Zoom, which is not HIPPA compliant. Her office was either a weird looking space with a toy stuffed moose hanging on the wall or she did meetings outside. I said my previous diagnoses were anxiety, depression, and ADHD. She said she'd only treat ADHD if she made the diagnosis and made no attempt at finding anything out regarding my attention deficit. I'd been diagnosed since I was in grade school. She said that since I was blind it might be helpful to read a book she wrote on a the subject. So I checked it out on Amazon and the book she "wrote" is just a collection of short stories of blind people in fiction. I mean I like Daredevil, but I don't see how comparing myself to a guy with superpowers is really gonna help me cope with having to give up driving. She was constantly late to our 15 minute long sessions, which lead them to be like 7 minutes. 5 of which were her trying to remember what drugs I'm on. This is one of her worst offenses. Prior to every week's appointment, she'd send me a form that I had to send back. It had questions like, what medicines and dosages are you on? Are you pregnant? Are you thinking of hurting yourself? She rarely ever read these forms. It is, however, seriously disconcerting when he did and I'd get them wrong or whatever because she said she uses these forms to keep track of what medicines I'm on. She'd be super angry and condescending toward me about her forms. The real question, though, is shouldn't she, the doctor, be monitoring my medication in her notes? Speaking of medication she had me on so many drugs that I couldn't keep track of it. At one point the prescription ran out so I stopped taking one of them. The withdrawal was bad and I brought it up to her that I didn't want to be on it. She said it was working so well for me once. I told her that it wasn't doing much. She said patients forget how well meds work sometimes and I should stay on it. At one point I moved. I had to find a new pharmacy so we tried the Walgreens that was 15 minutes away. At the Walgreens they said my insurance said my Dr was supposed to get preauthorization for the medication (the one I didn't like anyway). So I send her an email and during my next appoint with her she said that the people at Walgreens are wrong she'd prescribed this hundreds of times and didn't need that. And the it must be that the people at Walgreens only have GEDs so they don't know what's going on. I was shocked. I felt like it was super elitist and kinda racist. What actually happened was my insurance needed preauthorization because insurance does bullshit like this all the time to deny care. She eventually got the preauthorization and couldn't admit that she was wrong. There are other stories about how she accused my 80 year old mother of a felony and I was literally worried she'd call the cops. When I moved I temporarily was out of state so she couldn't treat me. She sent my refills to the pharmacy where I used to live and I couldn't contact her for more because she wouldn't treat me if I wasn't in NY. So I went through a bad withdrawal. She wanted me to call some guy at the lighthouse guild and she sent me his contact card, which was blank. I told her about it and she was angry I didn't call them and search for this guy who was like an accountant. Eventually I switched insurance because I had some better insurance. Told her and she gave me attitude and I was done with her.

I've done Reiki a couple of times before but never felt a huge difference. With Deborah, it was different. During the session, Deborah asked questions to understand my needs and concerns. She was positive and warm, and made me feel very comfortable. She also introduced me to flower essences, which I hadn't heard of prior. During the healing session, I yawned a lot (like I was releasing a lot of repressed energy!). Afterwards, I felt relaxed - it was clear that the session truly worked although it wasn't done in person, which I was a little nervous about at first. Deborah also quickly followed up after our session with additional information and promptly responded to a follow up question I had about flower essences. It's been four days since our session, and my chronic neck pain that I've had for 10 weeks is significantly better - in a way my chiropractor couldn't help. I'm really glad I made the investment in my healing session with Deborah and now understand why she has so many positive, genuine reviews (she's not compensating us or giving us discounts to write these, like some businesses do!). This is an updated review of Sharon and NY Private Practice…read more I recently reached out to Sharon after not having spoken with her in 5 years because I was facing a crisis and fondly remembered her as being one of the sweetest, easy going, down to earth professionals in her very delicate field. I am now changing this review because, like the last person who posted about her missing appointments, she did the exact same thing to me. I was experiencing some very serious adverse side effects to one of the medications I was on. The meds were exacerbating existing conditions and I felt completely out of control of both my actions and my life. This is when things became troublesome. I scheduled a video appointment and when it came time our meeting, she put me on hold to take another client's call, stating that it would be really quick. I waited patiently for, no joke --- TWO WHOLE HOURS --- before finally ending the call. I e-mailed, texted, and called multiple times to let her know about my worsening symptoms. I never directly heard back. I had different appointment times confirmed, only for her to stand me up over and over again. By now my anxiety was full blown and not being able to get in touch with her only made matters worse. I found myself scrambling to find a new healthcare practitioner. She put my life in danger and didn't care. Instead, I watched as she erased my final scheduled appointments without any explanation given. I really don't know what happened to her, but I sadly cannot recommend seeing her anymore and urge you to look elsewhere. I also see that the therapist (Narcisa) with whom I was referred to is no longer there either. Bottom line: I needed her care and she ignored all cries and pleas for help. Unprofessional in every way imaginable. Stay away.
