My experience with Dr. Brian Pell deserves to be publicly documented so others know exactly what…read morethey are walking into. I booked an appointment specifically for an ADHD assessment, clearly stated as such. That was the entire purpose of the visit. Yet, during the call, Dr. Pell casually informed me that they are not conducting ADHD assessments at this time and may resume, possibly in January or February of next year. This immediately raised a red flag: if you are not offering the service, why accept an appointment for it? Why bill insurance for something you never intended to provide? The entire interaction lasted 18 minutes, and not a single part of it resembled an evaluation. Instead, we spent the bulk of the time discussing my career. He asked about my former psychiatrist's nationality; he seemed very interested in why he didn't take insurance "as a Black doctor" (which I perceive as a common conflation between race and poverty). He then asked only two quick, surface-level questions about why I was seeking an ADHD assessment. Then in the same breath that he told me they are not doing assessments, he also told me that I probably do not have ADHD. He said this despite the fact that I was coming to him for a second opinion after already completing a comprehensive, legitimate ADHD evaluation with a diagnosis from an actual specialist. (I did not share I was coming in for a second opinion, as I didn't want it to be biased). He provided no testing, no structured questions, no clinical methodology, nothing that even remotely resembled evidence-based practice. The whole thing felt dismissive, and frankly, like a complete waste of my time. I left the appointment feeling misled and deeply uncomfortable, as insurance had been billed for a service that was never delivered. If you are seeking serious mental health care, diagnostic clarity, or responsible clinical practice, I strongly recommend looking elsewhere. This experience felt unhelpful and entirely out of alignment with what any patient should expect from a licensed provider.

I am pleased to write this heartfelt testimonial on behalf of Dr. Marc H. Epstein, the best…read morepsychiatrist I ever had since my diagnosis of major depressive disorder in 1997. To put this heartfelt testimonial in a more complete context; please know that before meeting Dr. Epstein I had made two serious suicide attempts and received treatment from four different psychiatrists between 1997 and 2013. These doctors ranged from the indifferent, irresponsible, deranged and the one right before I luckily met Dr. Epstein was mean - not just coldly efficient/thorough as I had previously thought for more than seven years. Dr. Epstein is far more empathetic and professionally responsible than any of the other psychiatrists I ever dealt with. I had experienced some who would blindly write me refills for whatever medication I wanted to a psychiatrist (fortunately, he has retired) who felt that yelling at emotionally fragile patients like myself was wise psychological methodology. Dr. Epstein saved my life in 2013 by helping me deal with the near suicidal psychosis that I developed over possibly losing my apartment due to untrue noise complaints. Furthermore, he was instrumental in assisting me with the overwhelming grief I experienced when my beloved elder brother unexpectedly died in October 2017. I will always be grateful to him for the care and compassion he showed me - insisting on personally seeing me to make sure I was alright only a few days after my brother's passing. Dr. Epstein is an extremely ethical, empathetic and wonderfully skilled psychiatrist. With my prior psychiatrist, I felt that I was only a 15 minute assembly line - stamp the medication and make next month's appointment. Dr. Epstein is totally different - he cares about his patients. Oftentimes, I wish that I had met him earlier for if I had - I am sure that I might be completely better by now. -Judith M. Young, 9-10-2018 Judyyoung905@gmail.com

I saw a therapist twice a week altogether for about a year here. I have to say it was mostly wasted…read moretime. I accept partial blame. After listening to the Positive Mind radio program, I decided to give this place a try. Armand DiMele is probably worth seeing at double the expense but even then I have several words of caution. It is so important to interview and closely observe your therapist before becoming quite vulnerable and even when you're vulnerable you need to stay proactive. Just because they have a license or degree doesn't mean they are any good nor that they ought to be entrusted with anyone's deepest trust and vulnerability. Above all, you need to put the therapist to work for you. Right from the start you need to ask many direct questions. I didn't do that. I just assumed I'd get paired with a great therapist and if I talked enough I'd be analyzed, understood, advised. Not the case. After a somewhat cryptic, evaluating, mini session with Armand, he paired me with a male therapist which was the first problem, furthermore he was one of those therapists who mostly ostensibly listened, only now and then he'd punctuate his silence with, "what do you think/feel about that" essentially never providing any feedback, wisdom, nothing. Worse than a waste of time. Frustrating. It felt like paying someone to be ignored. Talking to the air. Maybe that's fine for a few people out there but not me. After a few sessions with that therapist, I politely requested a different one. I felt guilty for requesting a different one but that is silly. As a paying customer (cash--I did not have insurance but they probably accept insurance), you have every right to change your therapist. I was then paired with Ora who was very friendly yet professional. However, I felt like most our talks were vague and aimless. I didn't feel challenged. I had wanted to change my life at that point but we never delved into anything basic like how to go about gaining particular useful skills to move on. No detailed ideas. Instead I just felt trapped and that she was simply a sympathetic ear, a paid sympathetic ear. Maybe subconsciously I didn't want to change but then why the hell be in therapy if you're not willing and ready to do the work required for change? That is just pointless, frustrating, wallowing with precious time and finances wasted. If you're considering this place or any therapist at all, I strongly recommend you be vigilant and make sure you get your money and time's worth. Frankly, I got more therapy out of Stefan Molyneux's Logic of Love book. I definitely don't agree with everything he wrote or talks about but it's truly worth a slow, absorbing read or audiobook listen.
