When concerns are raised, communication is handled in a dismissive manner rather than through collaboration or dialogue. Parent input is acknowledged superficially, key points are bypassed, and agreements made at the classroom level are not upheld at the executive level. After receiving an assessment that did not accurately reflect our child's abilities (completed less than two months into enrollment), we raised concerns about the lack of context, narrative, and communication. The teachers acknowledged the assessment was not an accurate reflection of her capabilities and agreed it should be updated to reflect her short acclimation period and current capabilities. However, when this was escalated to the Executive Director, those agreements were disregarded. Rather than updating the assessment as discussed, leadership insisted on singling out a child instead of correcting an administrative misstep. Requests to simply revise the original assessment with accurate context were dismissed. When we expressed concern about the long-term academic implications of having an inaccurate student record, we were dismissed. The Executive Director superficially acknowledged our concerns, and reasonable requests were met with inflexibility rather than problem-solving. A school's culture is shaped from the top. If families are leaving, leadership may want to reflect on how parent advocacy is received and addressed.

Either way, 5th period PE always sucked because it was consistently hot as balls by the time we got out there. And I had 5th period both years ... I mean who likes to go through puberty so early? But once upon a rainy 5th period PE, my teacher selected me, Sadeer and Diahnna to go out and collect the soccer cones off the field. As good little robots, we agreed. The rest of the class remained inside a classroom on the other side of campus. It was cold and we were drenched ... AND we all had to go pee. We waited outside the locker room and then looked at each other. Sadeer: Who has the key? Diahnna: I don't. Me: I don't either. Sadeer: Sh*t, we have to go get it. Who wants to go? Me: I don't know but hurry up! I've got to go pee. Diahnna: So do I. Sadeer: Shhhhhhh .... hahaha. Ok, ok shhhhh .... Me: SHUT UP SADEER! GO GET THE KEY. Sadeer: Ok, ok. I'll go get it. (5 minutes later after being in the rain and getting COMPLETELY wet.) Sadeer: Ok, I've got the key. Shhhhhh ... hahaha. Shhhhhh .... Diahnna & Me (jumping up and down to hold it in): Hurry up!! We got to pee! Sadeer: Well, geez. So do I! Just relax. Shhhhh .... hahahaha. Don't go pee in your pants now ... Me thinking to myself as Sadeer unlocks the door: Sh*t. Too Late. So the other girls flee to the bathroom and I just stroll because guess what? ... no more urgency. After that incident, I wrapped my jacket around my pants and inconspicuously walk to the classroom where we joined the rest of the PE(e) class. All I could think was for once, THANK GOD IT'S 5TH PERIOD. One more class to go. After I got up from my 5th period seat ... I remember thinking "wow! I didn't know wooden seats soaked up that pee smell so well." But guess what? Any kind of embarrassment went away after I got home ... only because my mom knew how to express the exact words of comfort. Me: Mommy ... I peed in my pants today. Mommy: That's ok ... everyone does it.
