On a recent first visit to the Gastroenterology Dept, I parked in the East Lot for the first time and walked up the ramp to the main building only to find two elderly men sitting behind the desk in grey uniforms that appeared to identify them as part of the Maintenance Dept. When I asked for directions to the Gastro Dept - they had NO IDEA! Next, I approached a staff member at a desk outside the entrance for Breast Cancer patients. She pointed me in the direction of the Young Pavilion. After a VERY LONG walk that took me in almost a full circle, I finally found the Gastro Dept - only to be greeted by a receptionist on the phone who refused to make eye contact of acknowledge my presence in any way. I would've be happy for just a smile - but NOTHING. After sitting for a while, I went to the rude receptionist who was still on a call that was - apparently - more important than greeting patients. I stood over her until her finally made eye contact but not with a smile. Instead, she snarled, "I'm on a call! This lack of staff training is inexcusable at a nationally recognized cancer hospital!

That being said, we had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEM in scheduling the cardiac testing for my daughter who has a developmental disability in addition to the current questions about her heart's health with Jefferson's team and they followed up the initial e-mail with a phone call verifying the information including the time at which we needed to arrive. From the very first stop along the day's journey all we received were smiles and professionalism mixed in with the right amount of personal interaction and conversation. Did my daughter have to wait in a hospital gown for more than an hour not knowing exactly when she was going in for her procedure, yes but staff regularly checked on her with smiles. They talked with my daughter always doing their best to calm her nerves and her fears. The American public needs to learn the word PATIENCE and put it into practice because impatience at times causes folks to miss the positive care providers are attempting to give. As we prepared to get the procedure done one by one of the "surgical" team came by to share information and to ask if we had any questions or perhaps even more importantly if we had any concerns. The anesthesiologist really calmed my daughter by showing her a scan of her arm. We obviously were not present for the procedure but before our daughter was awake the head of the team was sitting down with us to explain everything that went on. She even removed her scrubs providing a more personal feeling to the conversation (If she doesn't remove her scrubs for post operative conversations all the time, I would highly recommend it because with a sea of scrub covered humans it was nice to hear the report from a physician dressed like we were. It was a great touch!). Yes, we had to wait and wait and wait until our daughter's readings were acceptable. We were so ready to leave and our daughter wanted to get dressed. And, yes we were not in a comfy private room but what mattered were the smiles of the staff and their friendly quick chats with us about our daughter, about their work histories and their families, and just about life. That's the way it should be! It would be so wonderful if no one needed cardiac care but if you are in Philly or South Jersey or the Delaware Valley our experiences tell us that Jefferson is the place to go!! The practice started with Dr. Greenwald, and then went to Dr. Alan Shakt before Dr. Stein bought it when Dr. Shakt retired. Dr. Stein has owned the practice for a good couple of years now, so I know him pretty well. This practice is located on Morrell Avenue just off of Frankford, in the medical building next to the shopping center with Mr. Chicken It's on the left if you're coming from Frankford Ave. Conveniently, there's also a place to get blood tests done in the same building, just a different suite. Dr. Stein is a family practitioner who graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) about 11 years ago or so, so he's still pretty young. He's extremely nice, and he spends quality time with each patient, with his attention fixed firmly upon the patient during the office visit. He doesn't rush you in and out like a lot of doctors, and he listens carefully as you describe your symptoms. He's very careful about giving antibiotics only when needed, and he is extremely well-informed about the latest medical issues. He's very helpful with diet information, and he's particularly good and readjusting my spine if my back hurts (I'm young, I know, but I have back issues sometimes). I also trust his referrals to specialists because he knows his stuff. He's also got a cool PDA type of thing that he uses to enter prescriptions electronically, and *poof* they zoom through the air and print out at the front desk. That way, the pharmacist can read the prescription. He's also really available when the office isn't open, for emergencies, and he has coverage when he's not available. So, even though he's a solo practitioner, he's very accessible. His staff is also really, really nice. I've known some of them since I was really little, and the others have been there for a long time. It's a good sign when there is little staff turnover at a business, I think. I just have two tiny complaints. The first is that I sometimes find it difficult to get through on the phone when I call to make an appointment. It seems like it's always either busy or I get the answering service even though the office is open. My second complaint is that I always have to wait a while when I come in for an appointment. It's not unusual for me to get called back 30 minutes after my appointment time. I suspect that it's because Dr. Stein does spend so much time with each patient, but sometimes I'm in a hurry and it's annoying. My parents go here, too, and my mom once complained (firmly) to Dr. Stein about it, and it was like she kicked a puppy. He's far to nice to yell at. Honestly, though, these two complaints are extremely minor because I am happy to have a doctor whom I can trust and who I know cares about me. On a final note, I'll leave you with a story. I moved to Connecticut for two years for grad school, and, my first week there, I got the most awful stomach bug I've ever had. I threw up nonstop for hours, and I didn't have a doctor up there because I'd just moved, so I called Dr. Stein. I told him what I was experiencing, and he wasted no time in calling a prescription to the nearest pharmacy for a medicine that would make me stop puking. And it worked. That's a doctor who cares because he made no money from me on that call. It's not like he could charge my insurance for an office visit. He's the best doctor.
