Yes folks, need money for the meter - there's a change machine that gives dollar bills and quarters. Only have a $50 the lady at the bond window will break it and direct you to the change machine for more small bills and coins. The civil staff is usual government-type folks but I have to admit each time that I have had to deal with a uniform officer from the Sheriff's department they have been the most pleasant, polite, less attitude-y, cordial than the police or state and city uniformed officers. This isn't a slight against others just my point of view based on various encounters. LOOK SERVICE MATTERS & IT MATTERS EVEN IN PUBLIC SERVICE OFFICES.

Gives good officers a bad name.

They will come and pick you up anywhere in Madison and personally escort you to the front desk. Guest services took a while to check me in but the personal attention that I received was outstanding. They held on to all my personal items and kept them securely stored. The worker who took my personal items was carrying a weapon so I knew that anyone who tried to mess with my stuff would really have it coming. They gathered as much personal information from me as they could in order to fine tune my experience. They loudly spoke to the group of people who also checked in with me in short easy to understand terms probably for those who may have been hard of hearing. I was able to wait in a glass enclosed room with about 8 other guests who were waiting to have their rooms prepared for them. The glass enclosure gave the room a stylish look that complimented the concrete walls nicely making for a stylish effect. The glass was also bullet proof for our safety and security. I must have been surrounded by some of the top legal minds in Madison as a few guests were all very concerned with their upcoming court cases. Since it was taking so long to have our rooms prepared for us they offered us a complimentary meal. The waiter delivered individually wrapped sandwiches to us. I was impressed that they place such a high regard on sanitation by individually wrapping each sandwich. The meat was nothing like I have ever tasted before, It was not hot or cold but at room temperature but I can forgive this as it was again...nothing like I have ever tasted before in my life. The beds seemed to be of poor quality but the toilets and sinks are updated stainless steel, which adds a certain modern flair to the place. Showers were rather inconvenient and lacked the privacy I am used to. All in all it was a memorable experience. After my stay in Madison, I was upgraded to larger lodging in Fonddulac, WI. At the end of my stay I asked when checkout time was and I was told 7:45. It seemed oddly specific, but when I called over to the guard to let her know I was ready to check out, she refused to let me leave. I had to escalate to the manager, a Ms. Warden. She informed me that checkout time was actually 8am. I wish the front desk had been clearer. Food service is prompt, but quality is low. No room service unless you get some sort of "Solitary"package or something. I wasn't interested in paying that premium. Beds also seemed to be cheap quality but again the toilets and sinks are updated stainless steel, which also adds a certain modern flair to the place. Gym area was fairly crowded and had VERY SPECIFIC hours, and the large security fences made it seem obvious that we weren't in a great area of town. Excessive security presence had the same effect. Overall, had a decent stay, but would prefer not to stay here agaln. I did party with a girl in a band named "Contra" or something, I don't recall the specifics. That was fun, though. Showers were again rather inconvenient and lacked the privacy I am used to. I would not recommend staying here.

The new Villager Mall, the South Side Clinic for the Access Community Health Center, the phoenix-like rebirth of Taqueria Guadalajara and the expansion of the St Mary's Hospital are all testaments to positive changes taking place in this neighborhood. In my opinion, the best example of the area's metamorphosis is the Goodman South Madison branch of the Madison Public Library system. With numerous meeting rooms, a children's section designed to stimulate interaction, original artwork covering the walls and a boatload of computer terminals, this new building serves as a community center in addition to its library duties. Every time I visit, it's buzzing with activity. I'm a fan of the reading area in the southwest corner of the building. With its fireplace, comfy chairs, a multitude of outlets to plug in your laptop and free wi-fi, it's a great place to drop in and get some work done. It's isolated from the rest of the library, so the activity in other sections of the building does not serve as a distraction to the patrons in this cozy little nook. As Pearl mentioned in her review, the staff members are always über-helpful. The only negative I can see if that the content selection at this branch is less than the Central Library and some of the other branches. However, with the use of LINKCAT, you can access media from 53 libraries that are members of the South Central Library System, so it's not that big of deal. And with more stores opening in the new Villager Mall, parking can be a challenge at times. If you haven't visited this library yet, I strongly encourage you to check it out.

The Woodman also is home to the Olin J. Eggen archives. (Eggen was one of the most influential astronomers of his time.) Even if you're not an astronomy student, the Woodman Library is one of the most (if not the most) quiet places on campus to study. A scattered number of small tables isolated by the stacks reduce sound to the classic "hear a pin drop" level. The windows looking out from the sixth floor of Sterling Hall offer some great views of campus, so there is the risk of that pleasant distraction. Current plans call for the Woodman Astronomical Library to be merged with UW Madison's Math and Physics Libraries in late 2020, so take advantage of this great space while you can!
