The dance cave is located up the stairs on the 2nd floor, after walking past (& smelling, eek) the gender neutral washrooms, you get to the ticket table where it's $10 cover or free for people with a student ID. Once you're in, there's a bar to the right, picnic tables and wall booth seats on the left, dance floor in the middle, & a stage. People cram onto the stage and dance there too which can get pretty wobbly & sweaty. The DJ is an older guy who doesn't take requests and sticks with playing music that ranges from: 2000s hip hop/r&b & pop, a few Drake songs, & basic girl anthems (like Mama Mia & party in the USA). Oh Dance Cave. You are my dance home away from home. I love coming here on Saturday nights because they play a great mix of 80s - contemporary alternative, dance, indie and rock hits. The crowd is fun and unpretentious, the atmosphere is casual and it's not very expensive. You can usually find a seat at one of the banquets on the side, particularly if you're okay with sharing the banquet with other people. Crowd is generally people in their early 20s and the dance floor is crunchy and sticky with broken glass. There is a pretty low percentage of creeps at this place, compared to others. This is a place I avoid like the plague, which is unfortunate because a handful of my friends love it so we have arguments weekly about whether to go here or not. My issues with Dance Cave personally: It's a very young crowd. A lot of underage kids, the average age is 18/19 at best. The rudest and most degrading men I've possibly ever met were the first faces I was greeted by before attempting to enter this establishment. These bouncers refused 2 pieces of identification because I've dyed my hair since getting my ID photo taken. They were clearly on a power trip, suggesting that if I wanted to drink in Toronto I should be looking exactly how I did when I was 16 (when my photo was taken). Oh Dance Cave, the quintessential establishment of my 20s. Dance cave is where I met the love of my life (when I was 20 and we're still together!), it's where I wasted away too many nights with the best of company, it's where I've made many friends and perhaps made one too many mistakes. Dance Cave is like high school, but the high school that movies are made of. After a while, you start to know everybody. And simply going to dance cave becomes a regular part of your existence. Dance Cave and people from Dance Cave are now intricately woven into the narrative that is my life. Thus it goes without saying that Dance Cave was my life for years, but it trickled out as I got a little older. It's full of a lot of college and university kids, which was awesome when I was in university, but now that I'm 27 Dance Cave doesn't always leave me with those happy fuzzy feelings like it used to. That said, i've started going back there on ocassion again recently and I've been having an awesome time. I may not like some of the music as much as I used to, but that is because Dance Cave is quick to remind me this aint 2007 anymore, honey. Lots of youngins running around, doing their white girl dances, texting their friends from the dance floor, spilling their vodka crans on your shirt....Dance Cave is what it is and everyone has an opinion on it. If this was five years ago I would have given DC 5/5, but since I am older and wiser and know that there is more to life than getting wasted into oblivion to a soundtrack of 80s, alt rock and maybe a bit too much groovy stuff every weekend, 4/5 it is...but only because nostalgia is a drink served strong. read more

What happened? Oh, right... I got old. When I was 23 and had first moved to Toronto, my friend Jess and I spent almost every Thursday here drinking $8 pitchers of Waterloo Dark. We were the Dance Cave Queens accompanied by Michael Jackson guy, Pajama dude (who confessed to me one night that his real name is 'Enzo') and many other late night Toronto Freaks and Geeks. The music was always amazing, the bouncers were complete twats and the drinks were uber cheap. They even used to have those awesome circular booths that fit about 8 ppl. This was before douchey bottle service. Because you WANTED to get up and walk to the bar. How else were you supposed to hook up with a hot guy or get him to buy you drinks? And with drinks this price, you only had to come with $5 cover in your pocket to have fun. Now, my Dance Cave Queen Days are done. At almost 40, I love to dance all night and drink my face off. But I'm likely to step on these little ones who are more sparkly than MJ dude's glove. Like , I mean... ALL OVER! Sequined dresses and high heels. My sexiest outfit was a Supergirl Tee (which the dudes loved) and jeans with my cons. The last time I went here was when I turned 35 and we had a blast, but I would probably be laughed and nicknamed 'Nice Try, Grandma.'. So I'll leave this place for the young 'uns. First of all... could the name be any better? I don't think so. It's just so simple, reminding me of the film, "Snakes on a Plane". Come here, the line is always shorter than that of Brunswick House and this is for no good reason when Dance Cave= #winner. The dance space is not too cave-like, but it is big. They need another bar, beer tub or something to help with the flow of traffic. The faster the people get their drinks, the more they can dance! The bartender was SO good though, knew the price of everything and did excellent math in her head. The DJ is very easily accessible, even in his booth. I was shocked and appalled when he refused to play my request! Me: Hi! Can you play "Whip My Hair" by Willow Smith? Him: No. Me: Not even ironically? Him: Never. Ouch. I did like the music, and was still able to thoroughly enjoy and dance. I would have loved if the DJ took my request, if I remembered to bring out my Student ID that night and if the bathrooms weren't so gross. Well, except intimidating young boys. It appears young men are far too consumed with fulfilling their sexual goals to care about their own physical safety or the intentions of their targets! It's basically a cement cave with absolutely no thought or effort put into ambiance. There are no interesting light fixtures, no art installations, not even a paint job! A parking lot is more enchanting than this place. But where else will you hear Spice Girls in a wasteland of adolescence? Where else will you see misguided youth pressing their bodies against a decaying wall, exchanging spit and such romantic anecdotes as "you're so $#%ing hot" and "wanna come back to my place and get high?" or better yet, "you are so much more fun than that twat Becky in economics." I feel like if I were in a relationship with the Dance Cave....it would be time for us to break up. Not that it wasn't great (fantastic even) in the beginning, but the last couple times we've seen each other have just been straight up deal breakers. Okay enough with the annoying analogies. Dance cave is the perfect place to just let loose and dance all your troubles and stress away. I love that everyone does their own thing, and the music is fun, and it usually gets pretty packed. But honestly the last few times I've been there my hopes of a great night have been shattered. I find myself more annoyed at being shoved around, and having to wait forever for a drink, and then I look around and I really am in a dark cave (at least it looks like a cave), that I waited half an hour to get into. Then I make a mental note to stop trying to make the dance cave what it used to be. I don't know if it's so much changed, it might just be me. This place has the worst security/door staff I have ever experienced in my life. Me and my friend were going to see a concert and I was unreasonably denied entry as soon as we came through the door. On top of that when I tried to reason with him, because I was not drunk, my friend could prove that and he shoved me with considerable force. I am a petite girl. This was the second time I have experienced horrible service in that place, the first time was for a friends bday and the same thing happened that time, always with the same bouncers, who are rude, inconsiderate pricks that think it's ok to shove a woman. I actually love Dance Cave. Being a student, anywhere I can get in for free is fantastic. Sometimes there's a line but it's never very long, you'll be in in less than 10 minutes. The DJs: are hit and miss. Fridays used to be my favourite night, because drinks are cheap before 11:30 (on Saturdays too) and there's usually some solid hip-hop/R&B going on around 10:30-11 when I usually get there. But the last time I went on a Friday the DJ played random ass shit, including Kanye West and Skrillex. And that's just not what Dance Cave is about. The dance floor: is generally empty before midnight, and then gets crazy packed. Now, this is my absolute favourite thing about Dance Cave. I can't dance at all. I'm a short white girl with no rythm who couldn't bust a good move if my life depended on it. But, at Dance Cave, no one cares. No one cares what you're dancing like, or even if you're dancing. I go there to be my weird gyrating self and no one gives a damn. Another mentionable note: as a girl who likes dancing, any place where I can dance with my friends without being harrassed or grabbed by a stranger with serious entitlement issues is heaven. The bar: could be bigger. There's usually two or three bartenders, two guys and a girl, and when it gets busy it takes quite a while to get your drink. The guy with the glasses was kinda rude to me last time I went and asked him to remake my drink (vodka7 that tasted like vodka and fountain water). BUT! The curly haired one who normally wears a trucker hat is the greatest. I might be biased there, since it's gotten to a point where he recognises me, but he's always incredibly nice and fast with the drinks, and never seems to mind as the night goes on and I run out of enough money to tip him properly. tl;dr: Dance Cave is awesome, and totally worth a try for those debating where to spend their Friday/Saturday night. read more

This is one of my top 5 spot in the city for an amazing, cheap and fun night of dancing, mingling and maybe making out with some bearded weirdo. Upstairs from Lee's Palace. I love Lee's and I find that I lot of people don't know there's a dance place upstairs. The floor upstairs is huge, the crowd is hipster/university kids/people with no money/people who are already drunk (i feel like i should have hashtagged all of that...). Everyone is friendly unless you wear a dress and heels apparently. I came here once after a work Christmas party in fancy stilettos and a dress and was almost booed out. LEAVE ME ALONE! I'M SORRY THAT I SHOWERED THIS MORNING!!! Beers are $5 on tap. Don't know about the rest, but judge from the beer price - the place is cheap. Cover is usually $5 unless you have a student card, then it's free. Make sure it's valid (duh?). The bouncers are hit and miss. One of them is always super nice, the other one is a huge f-ing dbag and i want to throw him down the stairs. Music is usually a mix of pop/top 40/oldies/indie. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The bouncers are terrible, security has no idea how to do their job. Tons of under age kids being allowed in and yet of age people are being denied entry for no good reason. Free cover on a Saturday night with student ID and this place was still empty... I wonder why... Save yourself the trouble. Especially if you are in a big group, chances are the bouncer won't let one person in your group in and it will spoil the night for everyone. Way better places you can go to that offer free cover with student ID, guestlist before midnight etc... where the drinks are just as cheap and the staff will treat you like a person not an animal. This place is just amazing. First off the the aesthetics of the whole place is really really nice, there's a lot of room upstairs (the main club area) for anyone to chill, have a drink or just dance as much as they want. The booths are very comfortable and there's plenty of them. The dance floor is pretty big and the music resonates pretty sweetly all over the floor. But by far my favorite part is the music they play. They play really nice easy to get hyped to music that's popular. I personally find it kinda hard to get super amped at a lot of clubs because sometimes the music is too techno for my tastes but the DJ at dance cave really knows his stuff and always gets the crowd hyped. The crowd is mostly Uni students because you get in for free with a University ID, and the bartenders and staff are really really friendly (something you don't find that often in downtown clubs). I totally recommend this club to anyone who's visiting friends downtown and isn't super familiar with the club scene here. It's a really chill place where you'll have a lot of fun, and is by far one of my favorite places to go to on a Friday/Saturday night. read more

Loved what Elaine just had said about the Dance Cave, as I can only say the same: "Oh Dance Cave". I gave my first visit there on Monday, as this is when they are playing 80's mixed with some alternative. And it is FREE on Monday's and Tursday's. Monday is perfect if you want the dance floor just to yourself and your friends, as just a handful of people are in, leaving lots of room for dancing, lots of booths in the washroom. There are several air cannons blowing air everywhere, so it is not getting stuffy. Crowd was definitely 30+ with a group of twentysomething's who seemed to have lots of fun. Music is not very loud, so you can sing along and talk to your friends. DJ Shannon was nice enough to give us a list of songs which she would play for us. Cool. We totally got it on and cleaned the dance floor and some of the stage, yeah, there is a stage also and lots of places to sit. It is not a classy place, be aware, looks like a youth center and you know how they look, but what matters the most good music to make you dance, room to dance and clean washrooms. No full drink containers allowed...of course :) Dance the night away at the Cave!!! read more

There's a certain set of rules and etiquette that comes into play when a group of guys are good friends, most commonly known as the "Bro Code". Exact rules and regulations vary, but the core values remain the same. Sometimes the code is employed to avoid disputes or to show proper respect, and sometimes in the name of the code, you end up doing something you wouldn't normally do; "Taking one for the team" as they say, to help benefit a fellow "Bro". In accordance with the code and the rules of Karma, I found myself in just such a situation: I set foot in the Dance Cave. Upon entrance, you'll notice that cover is $6, or free with a student card. Needless to say, from the onset it's clear that I don't represent Dance Cave's target demographic. We're at odds, you might say, because for several reasons they don't represent my ideal bar/club either. First and perhaps most glaringly, was the DJ. Either he was doing it for free, or lost a flair for his work a number of years ago. We're in an age where DJing has become an art form a competent DJ with an ear for flow and seamless progressions can make all the difference. The job of a good DJ is to guide listeners around musical twists and turns; interesting song selection can often take a backseat to creative song sequence. On this night, there were many more "what the fuck?"s upon the start of a new song than excitement. The venue could have put an iPod on shuffle, and got a more cohesive mix than what this guy was doing. If party-rocking legend DJ Z-Trip is a surgeon, this guy is trying to preform ocular surgery with a tire iron. As someone born in the early 80s, another interesting perk to the Dance Cave and their specific clientèle (most looking to have been born in the early 90s) afford you the rare opportunity to feel like the old guy in the club. Nothing drives your own age home like being sandwiched between guys in Kanye sunglasses (indoors) and girls in kafia scarves, and getting excited when a Nirvana song comes on, only to realize the people around you see no difference between it and classic rock staples like "Sweet Home Alabama" in terms of cultural relevance. You feel like Donny Kerabatsos: Out of your element. But alas, kids will be kids, the Dance Cave will surely continue to thrive, and I'm going to stop short of using the word "Whippersnappers" in my increasingly curmudgeonly sounding diatribe. So, in conclusion, Dance Cave is the club equivalent of those parody based "_____ movie" comedies: If you were born before 1990, have developed tastes and aren't going into it ironically, you will likely leave confused and irritated. I must say that I've never been here on a weekend. But as far as I can tell, that is all to my advantage because Monday nights are awesome. No cover, cheap drinks before midnight and DJ Shannon playing 80s joy. Mostly empty dance floor - except for the crazy girls flailing along to Walk Like an Egyptian (not to be seen much more since we started day jobs) and the few other regulars. It picks up a bit after midnight and then drops off again around one (when the subway stops) during the summer. I had high expectations before going there... sadly, anything didn't go well, except for the few minutes I spent there listening to what it seemed to be a good selection of music. I cannot assure it is always that way and I will never be able to, since I am not going back there, ever!. The main reason; the bouncers, they were absolutely rude and disrespectful with my mates and I, specially with one of the girls that came with us. They were two black blokes, one bold and the other one with long hair. They shouted at us to move far from the entrance, whilst it was raining. Then they tried to push my friend and they wouldn't let her speak by shouting while putting their hands on her face. I was absolutely shocked. First of all, because I've never seen anything like that happened here in Toronto, and the fact that they treated my friend as if she was a bloody wild animal. For that reason when we got in, we decided to leave 10 mins after, we would not spend our money in a place where the customer service is that rubbish!. The Dance Cave is one enormous room above Lee's Palace on Bloor at Bathurst. On the weekends they play a mix of brit pop, retro and new pop and the place gets rammed with University students. It's had a steady weekend lineup outside on Friday's and Saturdays four people deep and a block long for as long as I can remember. Get there before midnight if you want to get in at all. If you are under 25, it's impossible to go to this place and have a bad time. Post 25, it gets a bit lame. P.s. the dude in pajamas is still there in his flannels every weekend. I actually came here for a concert that was over by 10 or so, and not for their regular weekend dj based dance parties. One thing that's neat, is that they have draught beer on tap. Sure, it's not great beer brands but given that once you go downstairs to Lee's Palace they don't have draught beer, it's a perk. The drinks were also reasonably priced so it has that going for it. The room is large and cavernous, but the ventilation seems pretty strong as I could actually feel the AC and fans doing their work in a well under populated turnout of the event in question I attended. Sound was good, but again its hard to gauge how good it would be with a full house. The pitched ceilings seem like it would work in it's favour though. That said, much like Lee's Palace below it, I don't think much money has been put into the upkeep of the place. Although there are booths lining the wall opposite of the bar, most of the seats felt like they could be removed with an improper balancing of weight on the benches. Rickety feeling and potentially a hazard, but hey, that's just the rock and roll style right? I can't speak to the vibe of the place... As it was pretty dead when I was here. I imagine thats why people come here is that its a good time.... I'll just shrug my shoulders, throw a 3 star review in the mix and keep moving on elsewhere. read more

Some friends and I from the states flew in for a few days for our spring break. We all wanted to go dancing and drink of course, thank god for Dance Cave! We had such an awesome time. Drinks were cheap ($5-10) and no cover for students before 12am! The music is an awesome assortment of 80s, 90s and 00s along with current music. They always played songs with a good beat to dance to! The bartender and bouncer were really friendly as well! Probably my favourite bar in the world. I've only been on a Friday because I heard that's the best night. Too scared to go another night in fear that my favourite five star bar won't be as good as I think it is. Music on a Friday is fantastic. An eclectic mix - from Eminem to Elvis to Wheatus to Ice Cube- the music is so much fun! I have found that they play a lot of similar tracks in the same order every Friday night but other than that it's great. Usually the crowd is just a lot of fun and really friendly. You can dance as crazy as you want and no one stares. Drinks are cheap and free admittance for students with ID. One bouncer at the door can be a bit grouchy so just be nice. Firstly, I feel that it is important to begin this review by saying that I was no less than FORCED to go to Dance Cave. You see, it was my friend's unofficial birthday, and I, as a man of integrity, must adhere to my responsibilities to make their birthday as pleasant as possible. Now, because I am a man of integrity, I find it difficult to visit an establishment until I have given it a full inspection, but because it was this person's unofficial birthday, and because of all my integrity, I went along with their plan. Upon our arrival, we were all ID'd at the door and I was stamped with a delightful (temporary, hopefully) tattoo with the words "Dance" and "Cave". They put it on my wrist (luckily I rarely wear a watch otherwise they would've tattooed my watch and we probably would have all laughed! Like, oops, that's a watch, not your wrist! You better take it off so I can tattoo your wrist properly). UPDATE: Tattoo has since washed off. Anyways, the D 'Cave was very much empty, and it was starting to look I could gloat about how i was right to question birthday boy's choice venue. All of the sudden it was as if God herself (ya I said it) brought her (ya, I said it again) personal collection of MP3's to the 'Cave. The DC instantly filled like a sexy, sweaty sardine can as Ajax Onatrio's answer to The Beatles, Sum 41, came bursting through the speakers. Needless to say, we quickly found out that the night was going to be pretty great. And it was. You may be wondering about my integrity. Let's just say it completely remains intact. To close the night off, we all decided to grab some grub (our tummies were hungry due to all of the dancing). We found a magic hole in the wall that gave us burritos and then we all went home. Bouncers are very disrespectful. I was denied access like another petite girl in the comments. On top of that when I was walking away the bouncer said, "Wait" when I turned around he blew me a kiss. Absolutely disgusting. Sadly from the sound of other reviews, I'm lucky I walked away without being punched. read more
