This is not your grandmother's Zumba class! Great balance of cardio and strength, mix of styles from Latin to Bollywood to african to highland to anything you can think of. And so much fun! Even for a mature, graceless, sort of sedentary type like myself. Coming in at a close second is the trampoline classes (Google Fit and Jump, or look for them on Groupon). Thanks to being protected by the perimeter of your mini trampoline, you and your classmates are safe from my flailing arms and wonky rhythms. You will be amazed at how hard you work while feeling that schoolkid high of JUMPING! Another great full body workout. Both classes are very welcoming - doesn't matter who you are, you can do this. You are required to sign up for a recurring membership fee to take the trial. My daughter was not aware. After the trial her credit card was charged about $28 per week for several months without her taking one class. The Underground Dance studio raked in the fees with no classes taken. Remember, the business model is that it's your responsibility to fight your way into a class and the Studio has zero responsibility. It is predatory.

I've only been to classes in the first floor (zumba, Wednesday nights and Sunday morning), but I attend quite regularly so I'm in and out of there pretty regularly. While it's definitely a great location (hello monopoly!) and I am so grateful for it's existence, it could definitely use an upgrade. The floors are in great shape which is of course the most important feature of a dance studio, but it is lacking in quite a few other areas, mainly the air conditioning (um, there is none) and the washrooms (why are you so tiny and dingy?). Even with it's downfalls, Dovercourt House is still a great part of the neighbourhood.

We signed up for 16 lessons learning Salsa, Merengue, Bachata and Rumba. It is absolutely fantastic. The studio is spacious and all of the instructors are really good. That said, our instructor, Val Casault, is simply amazing. She is a great dancer, but more importantly, she is super patient and really pays attention to my wife and I, getting to know our individual styles and movements so that she can personalize and tailor her instruction for us. I had two left feet when we started and in about 6 lessons or so we were already ready to go out and dance at a salsa club. Also, in addition to the dance lessons we paid for, the studio also hosts dance party nights every week which are free, unlimited and they're so much fun. When we finally went, we all wondered why we hadn't gone sooner, what a blast! One of my friends had met Marla, the owner and founder of Danceology, at an event and took it as a sign, vowing to tow us all in as soon as she could. If you're like me, and have been saying "It would be great to take some dancing classes," for goodness knows how long, I highly recommend Danceology. I must start that the studio is in a great location/community and the studio is absolutely stunning. The only downside is that the studio is all surrounded by windows - it doesn't really bother me that much, but I can see how other people may feel uncomfortable being in this environment for their classes. Why am I giving this place 2 stars? The groupon was $19 for 10 pilates, zumba, and yoga classes. That is one un-passable deal - but, they only offer those classes listed above 1-2x a day. Timing may be very hard for some people to attend (usually classes are around noon). BUT, wait...the worse feeling is walking all the way to the studio and then being told that class is cancelled because there's not enough people attending. The instructor was late 10 minutes herself and we sat there waiting for her. Once she entered the door and only saw it was the two of us, she just asked us to go, because she wasn't going to hold the class if it was just two people. I have never had this happen to me before - the instructors in other studios will still go on with the class even if I was the only student. I probably will return to try to finish my 10 classes...but I highly doubt I will get through all of them.

This uptown boutique barre studio has been open a little under two months now, and as someone who…read moreheard about it through word of mouth, I REALLY like it. The space is clean, sleek and bright. There's a shower there, as well as some lockers to store your things. (And, if I understand correctly, there's a small childminding service available while you work out.) The owners - a husband-and-wife team - are great, too. They're super-friendly, and helpful if you've got questions. There are 7 types of barre/ballet classes (plus a ballet-fusion class for kids), and sessions are offered much most times of the day, every day of the week. The weekends *are* - understandably - busier than weekday mornings. (And I heard that classes were full throughout Easter weekend.) But as someone with an alternative schedule (I work weekends and am off weekdays), I like the fact it's *not* crowded early weekday mornings. The instructors (I've had classes with Marvin, Dave and Rochelle) - are great. They're super-helpful - talking you through/demonstrating exercises, and helping you to correct your body to feel the full effect of the exercises. (If you're an early riser, or attend a class that's sparsely attended, you might get more attentive instruction.) They're even there to answer questions about stretching, etc. For anyone unsure of which barre studio to choose (there are now two, with Barreworks opening its uptown location), I would invite anyone to try out a class or two at Barre Beautiful before deciding. I think it's worth it.
