Fast forward to today, the chair was saggy, old and the threads were coming undone. A dog at one point even chewed on one of the wooden legs. This chair has a ton of sentimental value to me so I was nervous about handing it over to be redone. I am so relieved I did. The chair they returned back to me is absolutely gorgeous. It's a one of a kind. They redid the wood (which I did not ask them to do). They did a perfect job with the fabric, cushioning and tufting. This was 100% worth it.

The bottom was falling out. The springs were so far gone that every time you sat in it you felt like you might actually fall through. Artisan Interiors rebuilt the interior completely, eight-way hand-tied springs, the whole structure, and saved the original fabric his grandmother had chosen. All of it. They polished the wood while they had it. Two to three weeks, reasonable price, no drama. David runs the operation and was easy to talk to from the first conversation. Knowledgeable, straightforward, no overselling. It's a family business -- his father is the upholsterer -- and it shows in how they treat what you bring them. I didn't fully understand how damaged it was until I got it back. Now it feels the way it was supposed to feel. Solid. Sturdy. You can sit in it comfortably without holding your breath. It's been around for two hundred years, and with good care it'll be around for two hundred more. Thank you Artisan Interiors!

Then his people came to our home, quickly but carefully took all the chairs and bench and they were off. Unfortunately, the company put some of the cheapest possible materials on the seats, and I knew from the beginning that they would have to be redone at some point. So I finally did a little research and got bids from three upholstering companies, one of which was California Upholstering. I decided to go with them because 1) their bid was the lowest by several hundred dollars and 2), more importantly, the photos on their Yelp reviews showed some of the most intricate and beautifully done pieces out of all of the companies I was reviewing, particularly that white tufted 'vintage sitting chair' with the fringes. I figured that for anyone that can do that, my chairs would be a piece of cake. Well, the Gods were smiling on me when I made that decision. Travis's shop is 26 miles from my house, but he drove out to pick up my seats (he unscrewed the seats so he didn't have to take the set of chairs themselves), and then brought them back just 5 days later. He did such a great job on them, and we are both so happy with his work. We had the chairs set up in the garage so that he could screw the seats back on, and we saw that even on the underside, the work was meticulous. My chairs look better than they ever have. And lest I forget, Travis is a sweetheart. The three of us ended up talking about everything from how his business was started, to our favorite classic cars. His company has been around for over 100 years (his grandfather bought it in the 1930s when it had been around for only 10 years), and Travis is one of the last true craftsmen around in this industry. I feel very privileged to have had him do this work for us, and am equally delighted to have met him. I don't think you can go wrong with this company.
