Where can you find Texans during a heatwave? If you guessed anywhere, but Texas, you would be correct. It's a mere 9 hour drive from Dallas, but a visit to Ruidoso, New Mexico, especially during the cruel summer months is well worth the price of gas.
The Dan Dee Cabins are independently-standing log cabins tucked among tall pine trees and nestled against a hill. The cabins feature a queen-sized bed in a private bedroom; a living room with a wood-burning fire, a couch, recliner, and TV; a dining area with a table and chairs; a full-sized bathtub with shower head, sink, and toilet; a fully functioning kitchen with an oven, stove, microwave, full-sized fridge, freezer; and cabinets stocked with flatware and cookware. There is no dishwasher, but dish soap is provided as well as a drying rack.
The temperatures here will be much lower than anywhere else in Texas. However, it is nice to know that each cabin has A/C. Some had window units, but ours had a full system. We used it and enjoyed it immensely because 89, though cooler than 108, was still not cool enough for our liking.
Although the cabins provide all of the creature comforts you might need, they are dated. Think late 70s. Everything is old and run down, but functional. It might remind you of hanging out with your great grand parents.
There is a one way drive through the property. The path is gravel based and beyond that you will be walking among grass, dirt and pine cones. Bring sturdy shoes for getting around.
There is free WiFi, but it can be difficult to access from some cabins. It is somewhat slow. You might prefer to bring your own MiFi device or just use your phone. My T-mobile had a good signal here.
The drive into town is very close. You could walk, but it is a few miles on a busy road. Albertsons grocery store is very close in addition to several restaurants and cafes.
You can drive to Ski Apache, Inn of the Mountain God Casino, as well as the Monjeau Lookout. All will take about 45 minutes to get to due to steep climbs and winding mountain roads. You are likely to see wild horses, deer, and other wildlife. Hiking trails are all around. You don't have to travel far to find one and the Ranger Station downtown will provide you a free map.
You can also just sit on the porch of your cabin and enjoy the serenity of being in a beautiful, wooded getaway. It was just what I needed to relax and rejuvenate. read more
