TL; DR - A great place that is run by people who seem to be genuinely interested in you having a good stay.
Note: Items specific to the cabin are based on our stay in Cabin #4 (Studio).
My wife, son and I stayed here during March 2015 for three nights. The cabin looks like the pictures on the Cozy Bear website. We all three thought that it was a little larger than what we expected once we got in. Note: There are steps leading up to the cabin. This could be a problem if you have someone in your party that has a problem with climbing steps - especially at altitude.
Location
These cabins are just off the main drag in Ruidoso, but set back far enough that you don't get a constant stream of noise outside. If you're going to stay in Ruidoso, I can't recommend enough that you look at the places you're considering on Google. There are several places that are right in the middle of the high traffic area. If that's your cup of tea, more power to you. However, if you want something that is a lot less "active" but is still close to things, you should *strongly* consider Cozy Bear.
Kitchen
All the basics are provided as far as cooking and eating utensils. It was really great to have a larger refrigerator and a 4 burner gas oven. Between the microwave, coffee pot and the other appliances, a small kitchen was made to be very functional. There is also a good storage area in the kitchen for your food.
The kitchen area also includes a pretty good sized 4 seat table. It was more than adequate sized for eating and I would expect that it could get a lot of use if you were playing games.
Living area
There is a bed and a couch that makes another bed in the living area. There is a large coffee table in the room, a side table next to the couch and a dresser that holds the TV.
The main bed is large - king sized - and is comfortable. There are bedside tables on each side and a lamp on each table.
There is a little gas log stove that provides heat and ambiance for the cabin. In spite of what you might think when you see it, it really does do a good job heating up the rooms. It is controlled by a thermostat on the wall.
There are coat hooks near the front door and a small rod for hanging some clothes and a ceiling fan over the bed.
Bathroom
The bathroom is small, but functional. The shower is really small. My 5'5" wife said that it was a real adventure shaving her legs in it. The shower was also dark - due to the lighting in the bathroom and a dark shower curtain.
The Deck
Certainly one of the highlights of the cabin. It was nice to sit outside on the deck and look out at the trees and take in the mountain air. Even though the cabins face a street, you can do a good job of ignoring the village around you.
The (Minor) Negatives
Even though there is one in the cabin, the TV is bordering on non-functional. It's an older tube model and the picture was really bad. Service is provided through Dish Network and was adequate.
Even though there was Internet (Wi-Fi) service advertised, it was pretty spotty and slow. You could use it for checking email and a website lookup, but trying to stream Netflix wouldn't work at all. My wife sat out on the deck and tried to look up some items on Pinterest, but gave up after a few minutes.
Not Cozy Bear cabins fault, but cellphone coverage with AT&T is not good in this area.
Our cabin didn't have any dish soap provided. This was curious given that one of the check-out requirements is that all dishes need to be washed. Fortunately, we had brought our own. However, we did find a couple of pans that looked like they hadn't been washed well (or at all).
The lighting wasn't very "cozy". The main sources of lighting were overhead fixtures with CFL lamps in them. I know that CFLs are cheap to buy and run, but they provide harsh lighting. A single floor lamp or a couple of brighter bedside lamps with something other than a CFL would have made the place much more cozy and inviting in the evening.
The dresser isn't useful at all due to the positioning of it in the room. We thought it strange that there was a Rubbermaid bucket in the cabin storing the extra linens instead of having them in the dresser itself.
Summary
"Who goes to the mountains to watch TV or be on the computer?" Well, we do. After an active day of whatever, sometimes it is nice to just crash and watch a sitcom or hangout online. So, an improvement in technology would be a nice addition to an already really nice place to stay.
Our interaction with the proprietors was limited, but what there was was very positive. I had an issue with my reservation via the website, but Kelli was responsive and worked it out quickly.
Bottom line - Yes, we would stay here again and, in spite of the negatives mentioned here, thought that it was a great place. If you're looking for a clean, comfortable, well run place to spend a few days, you really need to check this place out. read more
