From the entrance, the restaurant is much larger than it appears, with a room in the back which could also be used for private parties. The setting is upscale and romantic with candles resting in wine bottles, but casual enough to bring work and school colleagues. The complimentary bread and pesto dip were almost too good, as we ordered three rounds of bread before our meal arrived. We decided to split a bottle of the basic Italian Chianti and it was perfectly acidic but rich to compliment our pasta orders. The pasta was all beautifully cooked to al dente with a textured bite. The ragu was rich but not too fatty. The fruits de mer had a perfectly flavorful seafood sauce that complimented the pasta. The ravioli looked wonderful- but I didn't get to try it. The portions were not too large or too small and left just enough room for tiramisu and tartufo. After my family ordered wine and appetizers, my father then asked the waitress whether she was ready to take our orders for the main course. He asked this to be polite because our waitress did not have a paper or pen to write down any of our orders. Upon hearing this question, the waitress curtly responded, "Why else would I be standing here?" And then rolled her eyes. My family's dining experience everywhere else in Norway has been great. Prior to this dinner, we all commented on how nice our experiences had been with the locals. We were all shocked to have our worst experience happen at one of the "nicest" restaurants. I strongly urge anyone reading this to think twice before going here. While you may receive great tasting food, the service will undoubtedly leave a bad taste in your mouth. The design is appealing and inviting; a quite spacious restaurant, but organised so that you don't get the hall feeling. The restaurant is quite new, so these days you actually have to book a table, which is available to you for 2 hours. If they remain at the level they're currently at, however, I expect guests can keep their table the whole night, if necessary. They did not get any support from the reviews in the local newspapers, and having experienced the restaurant first hand, I understand why. Besides good location and a nice atmosphere, Theatro isn't a place you would revisit for dinner. The menu, somewhat inspired by the Italian kitchen is varied enough and the prices are probably alright, but the food neither looks nor tastes great. We had two pasta dishes and one fish dish at our table, and it was just ok, at best. The service isn't lifting the impression; the waiters randomly passed by, but they were there to work, not to give you an experience.
