Portuguese cookery, with some Spanish and Italian dishes. Good wholesome fare which sticks to your ribs! Beware over-ordering.

My colleague in London…read moresuggested taking a walk through Brixton my last evening at our London offices back in September as I had not really been on that side of the Thames and am pretty adventurous. He also suggested coming here for dinner which I decided to take him up on that even though where Franco Manca is located has a lot of very interesting food venues which reminds me of Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles. The staff was helpful and sat me immediately. I ordered a glass of wine which was just okay. I'm not really knowledgable about wines so I guess my way through it and this one wasn't as good as others I've had. I ordered one of the more basic pies as I feel that should really be the tell-tale sign of a good pizza. The crust and dough of this pizza was truly excellent as was the cheese. The sauce lacked a bit of flavor and freshness. It wasn't a bad sauce, but I like when there's a fresh and very strong tomato taste which I didn't get eating this. After eating a full pizza, I didn't look to get a dessert and didn't even check to see if they had one. Overall, a decent pie to eat in a very peculiar area! When I arrived back to South Kensington, I noticed there was a location of Franco Manca a block away! Oh well. It was better to see a different area of London.

The 12" margerita pizza I had cost a scarcely believable £4.50, tiramisu double the usual portion size a similarly low £3.50 and soft drinks just £1.50. Further, as they don't sell alcoholic drinks they allow you to bring your own, for an incredible corkage fee of just £1. My bill for pizza, fruit juice, tiramisu and service came to a fraction over £11. But how did it all taste? Pretty good: the tomato sauce on the margerita was exceptional, comprised simply of sweet, juicy tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. The base was soft rather than crispy, but good enough. The only weakness was the quantity (rather than quality, which was reasonable) of the mozzarella, which was slightly excessive for me - next time I'll ask them to reduce it slightly. The tiramisu was among the best I've tasted in London, with a good balance between cream, sponge, coffee and dusting. And, as I've mentioned, in a huge portion. Overall, an amazing find. I struggle to think of a better Italian pizzeria in south-east London for the prices charged.

Thank god I showed up on time. The place is bustling with a genial staff and happy customers. The menu is seasonal and changes constantly so nothing I describe here will probably be on the menu when you go. We shared the mortadella appetizer with crescentines (a type of Italian biscuit) and pickled vegetables. Alas, the lemon sole was sold out so our mains choices were leg of lamb with grilled lettuce and vegetables or a hanger steak beans and bagna cauda. Who cared about the sole? All in all a wonderful neighborhood restaurant and well worth the trip even if you don't live down the street in Peckham.

I visited a couple of weeks back for its Sunday set menu and left wholeheartedly impressed. Choice is so stripped back in its set menu that it felt like a vanilla foray into submission. For a mere £20, I was treated to veal tonnato, a main course of cotechino with mustard-laced lentils and salad leaves, and an olive oil cake with creme fraise. Each dish was punchy and impressive. The first two courses did justice to Italian classics: the veal was rich and yet still delicate, the cotechino a happy meeting of earthiness, bite and soothing fat. The real star was the olive oil cake - an unassuming little slab, it was perfectly moist and admirably simply flavoured. All four of us ate well, and enjoyed the atmosphere enough to linger on a while after our meal. I hope to return soon.

Chef Francesco will make you feel like you're a guest in his house as he whips up delicious pasta and the best tiramisu I've ever tasted. The intimate setting lends a romantic air to the tiny gem of a restaurant, and it is ideal for coming on a date or with a good friend or two. If you're in the area you can stop by but don't be surprised if it is booked up, as it is only open for dinner, around 3 hours each night. Either go early, or better yet, message the restaurant on facebook for a reservation. We had two spaghettis, an amazing mushroom and a delectable bacon and sage. Both were tasty, but had distinct flavor profiles, great for sharing! We also enjoyed some of the house red wine available, and for our starter had fresh mozzarella on a bed of rocket (arugula) with balsamic vinegar. For dessert we had the tiramisu, which is frankly spectacular and is a must-order item. I'm not even much of a tiramisu lover but this convinced me - with light creamy flavors and a gooey overall texture I was completely won over. The chef and staff are very hospitable and often solicit feedback from guests, trying to optimize the experiance. If you love Italian food and unique experiences, this is the place for you! Enjoy - you'll definitely be seeing me there again!
