The outdoor patio is a perfect spot to enjoy dinner... complete with sun and rain blocking umbrellas. It started downpouring during dinner and NONE of us felt a drop! I ordered the Schweinshaxe and loved every single piece of that crunchy, crusty PIG SKIN. UGH! Their sauerkraut at this restaurant is also some of the best I have ever consumed. They have a great wine and beer selection and prices are relatively inexpensive for the quality of beautiful food you are consuming.

I went there with my tiny family (wife and son), when we visited our parents. A trip to the white turnip (the donjon is painted white, as it has always(!) been; funny) seemed to be a great idea due to the perfectly nice weather and my junior got hungry when we arrived there, of course. A great opportunity to check out the tavern. As we were told the former innkeeper quit and a couple from the area took over the restaurant - including renovation, update of the menu and lowering of prices. I am so glad I lived long enough to see that happen! The tavern presents itself in unobtrusive colours and is very down-to-earth/rustic; understandable, as this is the former house of the commanding officer of this castle (we participated in the guided tour there, so be aware of spoilers^^). The food was very down-home and is nearly exclusively made of fresh ingredients from the area; I personally can highly recommend the home made ramson-spaetzle! It was delicious and the little one sat in one of the available child seats and ate like a big one. The portions were completely adequate and cheap compared to what you receive - our family wallet was happy. I love that this is a non-smoking restaurant, what to me as a person is totally important. Smokers can smoke outside, if they want to! Additional info on the menu and the tavern can be found here (German): http://www.rolf-tilly.de/veste/schaenke/index.htm We were told, that there is a beer garden by now, located in the former herb garden. We couldn't check this one out yet, but we will sure do the next time we get there. I will insist on that!

I've always loved pork schnitzel, and it's always a staple everytime visiting Germany! This time is no exception, classic pork schnitzel with brown mushroom sauce never fails! I would highly recommend asking for a paper copy of your bill and checking it closely to ensure it's accurate before paying anything with cash. Our waiter simply verbalized an amount and wouldn't provide a copy of the itemized bill until I repeatedly asked for one, then low and behold it was inaccurate and he somehow accidentally overcharged us. The food was very mediocre and the schnitzel is very salty. There are lots of better quality restaurants in the area that don't rip off foreign tourists with cash scams. Beware!

But the food was fantastic and so was the service. I'm really surprised how many people speak English in Germany, especially the younger generation. It makes my life a lot easier when traveling. Thanks to my English speaking server, I had a delicious meal off their Specials Board. Steak was ordered medium but it seems to lean towards medium rare in Germany. Perfectly tender and flavorful. Gnocchi was also made perfectly. Pillowy soft. The gorgonzola sauce was yummy but the parmesan crispy bowl was what made it even tastier. Enjoy! Don't forget to start with an Aperol Spritz!

We had to ask for the check multiple times before we got it. Other than that no problems.
