As a mechanic myself of 25+ years I can 100% recommend Stephens engineering…read more My mums car developed a dsg fault which I do not have the experience in so I researched garages that specialise in dsg gearbox repairs. I rang a good number of garages, most of which told me a load of rubbish about what was needed to repair mums car, as a mechanic myself i understand exactly how the dsg box works despite not actually repairing them myself. I didnt tell any garage my trade and acted like a general punter to make sure I found a garage that told me the truth about what needed to be done sadly most didnt, being in the trade I know only too well alot of garage's sadly rip people off. I spoke to Jason and he told me what was likely to be the issue and gave me a min and max price estimate, the fault he believed it to be was exactly what I had found extensive research results prior to calling for quotes. The car was dropped off to them Saturday while they were closed and by midday tuesday it was repaired and ready right in the middle of his price estimate. When I picked the car up the workshop was very clean and tidy and well organised, and they had even given mums car a courtesy wash. I have always done everything to the best of my ability and believed in doing things right. I truly believe I've stumbled on a gem of a company with customer service at the core. I'm an honest mechanic leaving a solid review for a company which shares my values, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Stephens engineering and I will definitely only be making 1 phone call for any auto gearbox repairs in the future.

Sadly nowadays this kind of honest professionalism is rare; conclusion: if you sense the need for advice on transmission issues don't think...go straight to Stephens

I had previously taken my car to Purser and Luxford where they changed the Tensioner on my car…read morewhich broke a day after. I then took it back for replacement where it again broke a shortly after. Finally the situation was resolved after the hassle, I had. I even had to tow the vehicle myself! I then decided to take my car there for a MOT as I had done previously and on this occasion I had a very bad experience. They assessed it and failed it on its MOT and they tried to charge me half an hour labour for apparently needing the clean the mechanism on my seat belt, well that's what the sales guy initially told me. Turns out that was a lie and it was just stuck behind my boot which took me 30 secs to resolve (they changed this on the paper work before I got there.). They also tried to charge me £19.00 for a wiper blade I can buy from any factors for £4.00 and £10.00 for a bulb I can also buy for £4.00 myself. However after doing the work myself which also involved replacing a headlight I took it back for a free re test (that I had to negotiate for) and they told me they had to adjust the headlight aiming on both lights and re fit the headlight bulb I replaced. When I said can I just pop the headlight back in properly he angrily told me if you do that I will charge you for a full MOT! Which I found quite ridiculous and an excuse to charge me an additional labour cost. In the end for both popping a headlight in and adjusting the aiming on the headlights which took all of 5 mins (if that) as I watched him do it. They charged me £22.00. Most garages where you often take your car wouldn't normally charge for this at all. Avoid this company like the plague. I have had nothing but hassle with them and my family who also take their cars there won't be doing so anymore!
