Because everyone is calling, you're left just calling back - which takes time and can easily run into 50, 60 calls. Also, they don't allow you to order a repeat prescription by phone. So, you've got to go to the surgery, which takes time, wait 48h for the script to be prepared and then go back and collect it, which is just a bit backwards when a call could save a journey and hours of time. Once, speaking to the receptionist I was told that no appointments are available. To sum it up, to get an appointment was basically based on luck. Either I get to a queue quick enough or not. I don't understand how do they function at this practice but getting an appointment is almost impossible because they are very busy.
