The families tend to stay closest to the gated bathing areas (havnebadet), while the 20/30-somethings are in the middle near the "badebro" just after Kulturhuset. All areas are jam-packed on the warm summer afternoons, and by mid-August the ground is basically dirt and covered with cigarette buds, but it's still my all-time favorite place to spend a warm summer afternoon. Hourly dips in the canal (points for fanciest dives!) are an absolute must. Don't forget your beer, én-gangs-grill, and pølser, if you want the true Danish experience. Officially counting down the days until summer 2014.

The colorful historic houses lining the waterfront are so charming and aesthetically pleasing. It honestly looks like something straight out of a postcard! I loved watching the boats cruise through the canal while people enjoyed their meals and drinks at the waterfront restaurants. The atmosphere is lively yet relaxing, and there's something so peaceful about strolling along the water and admiring the historic architecture. We also had lunch at Nyhavn C, located right along the waterfront, which made the experience even better! We got to enjoy our meal with beautiful views of the canal, colorful buildings, and boats passing by. It was such a lovely setting to sit back, enjoy some food, and take in the scenery. It's also the perfect spot for photos! Every corner is picture-worthy, and the vibrant buildings make such a beautiful backdrop. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés nearby if you want to grab a bite or a drink while enjoying the views. Although it's definitely a tourist hotspot, I can see why it's one of Copenhagen's most iconic attractions. Whether you're visiting during the day or evening, Nyhavn is worth experiencing at least once. Such a picturesque and memorable part of my Denmark trip!

And, I use that term,"Tourist Attraction," lightly…read more It is said that this place is the home to many of those who live an alternative lifestyle in Copenhagen. They claim that this area is completely beyond the rules and the laws of Copenhagen. In some ways, that is pretty easy to see as the main street is lined with people selling weed and hash, which is still illegal in Denmark. Copenhagen is not Amsterdam. Though a bit sketchy, this city within a city is very well maintained. I am sure there is some other story going on here. ...One that we will never know. This being said, what you will find here is some of the best street art and graffiti that you will witness anywhere across Copenhagen. Of course, it is clearly stated all over the place, "No Photos." But, I'm guess that is more to keep the people dealing drugs safe and off the radar than anything else. One of the funny/interesting things I find about this location is that tour buses actually pull up to it. I don't know, maybe it's just me me, but if you are truly embracing an alternative lifestyle that all seems rather intrusive. Nonetheless, this is an interesting place. Even if all you do is look at the great street art, it is worth the visit.

Museet enlightened me to the circle of museums in the area, I saw the historical home on the list. And I am a sucker for an historical home! The entrance is a little unassuming and I probably would have missed it, had it not been for the easy-to-follow directions from the lovely woman at the Storm P. museum. There was a tent-sign outside advertising their "Women Authors" exhibit, but it was all in Danish, and the name of the museum was one of the smallest things on the sign. I was about to walk on past it, but the words "Jane Austen" caught my eye when I skimmed the sign while walking. And then I saw at the tippy-top the name of the museum. It is absolutely charming. AND included with the Copenhagen Card! At the entrance desk, you can get a packet that has a map of the layout of the house, as well as general information about each of the rooms in English (thank youuuu!). The home was a private residence to a family that were lovers and supporters of the literary and artistic community in the early 1800s. Several prominent authors (including one Hans Christian Andersen) were visitors. Like I said, I love an historic home, so even without that prominence, old books and old furniture and original fixtures fascinate and are of interest to me! Everything was in good condition and lovely to see. Upstairs was the special "Women Authors" exhibit. Unfortunately, all the information up there was in Danish. But, you know....the museum *IS* in Denmark, so I can't really complain. There were some Austen-esque clothing pieces that were fun to see. And beyond all that, outside the house is surrounded by lovely, very well-kept gardens. In the old greenhouse/orangery there is a little cafe. It was painfully charming. If you are in the Frederiksberg area, and you have the time, I would absolutely recommend that you visit this home and museum. But if these things just aren't for you...pass it by.

Back in the 90ties I were studying Geography, and we were making a analysis of the street. It had been a vibrant street in a working class area with all kinds of shopping. Fortunately a lot of the housing in the area is non-profite, so the area known as The Black Square is still black by it's emigrants and drunks. You can also spot a student or two. In the street you can buy to expensive coffee, support Islamic extremists, have icecreme, buy clothing, hang out with cheap beer, or do what you want. We're inclusive at Blågårdsgade. Although the street itself is dirty, the shop fronts are colourful and attractive and the graffiti is cool (NOT the tagging). Why are we all hanging out here? Because there is something for everyone. Blågårds Apoteket for the older day-drinking crowd, Harbo Bar for the hipsters, Beyti for drunks in need of a meal, and Cafe N for the vegetarians. Obviously these divisions are not cut and dried and of course there are also some places with a mostly mixed demographic like Props, Hind Marked, or the library. Although this street has had a troubled past, it is a nice blend now and when I'm here I feel at home. It's especially great when there is a block party or fleamarket going on. It's included on the Copenhagen Card but you still need to book your entry time online to avoid crowds. They do not allow walk ins - or at least they didn't in July. They also close the climb up if there's rain or is excessively windy for safety reasons. I took my friend and my two kids, ages 4 and 8. They did not want to go. I gave them a choice to stay at the front desk and they ended up making it up, since they didn't want to be left behind. You can store your larger bags (like backpacks) by the front desk at your own discretion. You should. It gets a bit cramped. I kept my purse on me though. As opposed to the Ruundetarn, there are a lot of steps. Roughly 400 up and another 400 down. It's not terrible but the closer you are to the top, it can get narrow and cramped. If you're tall, watch your head. It also gets to the point that groups going in one direction need to stop to let the ones coming down go just so you have room to go up. The last set of stairs to get outside is more like a ladder and you really feel it when you're getting ready to get back inside the church and you look down to see how steep and narrow those steps are. It is a beautiful view though! Your heart is pumping from the climb up, the wind hampers your breathing a bit... I heard a number of people breathing quite hard - but you're there! You go up further until you can go no more. When I went, there was a lady who was seemingly stuck at the very top and didn't budge from it, but no matter. (She spoke to us... just didn't let go.) Both of my kids made it up too despite their reservations. It took time to get them moving at first but they did it! My eldest got down without issues but going down those ladder steps, I just held my 4 year old in one arm and took us both down 2 flights before I let him down. But yes, younger kids can do it! (They got ice cream afterwards.) If you have a fear of heights or claustrophobia.... You can definitely turn around if you really can't do it. I couldn't stare down at the ground for long while at the very top (it is a bit high) but I didn't feel unsafe while up there. That was definitely an experience to remember! A bit of a thrill at the very end, haha.
