A good selection of real ale, sets off the old beams and friendly land lady. Moving with pint in had to the large garden overlooking the south downs way (see photos) we soon had steaming masses of food arriving. My lamb with apricots and apples was sumptuous. The liver and bacon my sister had was adequate, but the fish pie was a real winner, salmon, prawns, white fish in a creamy mash. Mmmmm. By the piles of benches stacked against a barn it looks like it gets very busy in the summertime - and according to some locals it "isn't as good as it was before it was discovered" but all in all a great lunch and think it is a great find. They've kept the comforting pub bar and quiet corners but also installed a family friendly restaurant area that opens onto an impressive beer garden with a two story Wendy house! But to return to the more important aspects of having a restaurant, the food is really good. The service is fast and every time i've gone they've been incredibly friendly. I've even blundered into a quiz night by total chance which was really well run (though i might be saying that as i won a bottle of wine!). Friendly, affordable, good quality, i forgot to mention the beer but there are some fine ales and bitters as well as the standard fair on tap. Good for families but also a really nice place to just sit and take your ease for a while. a real country retreat of a pub.

Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and the service is brilliant. I love the wine list, but I'm being torn away from making my way through that to try their excellent range of spirits!! They have a green and relaxing beer garden with a cool looking hut for kids (no more salt and vinegar crisps and cola by a fireplace! ), and even their own veggie patch where they grow a few herbs for the kitchen. The just ok; The interior is obviously in keeping with the age of the pub (and rightly so) but looks a little drab and when we visited during the day the interior was pitch dark and very uninviting as a result (I know it's day time but put some lights on maybe?). It was a hot May day and there was a roaring log fire which was another turn off (but a great feature in winter no doubt) The bad: I had a very hotly anticipated pint of TEA. I used to live in the area so know this tipple well. It was a very poor pint which had a sour undertaste. Perhaps the pipes weren't cleaned or something. Anyway, I can't damn all their beers from this single pint and sometimes a bad pint is how it goes, but I wasn't left terribly impressed.

They have a fabulous wine list, with super chilled wine (this is so so important, and so many restaurants get this wrong!), and beautiful, hearty portions of food. I had the sea bass - would recommend! mmmmm. In summer I can imagine that sitting out in the large beer garden would be just a delight. in fact, i am going to ensure that i do that one afternoon/evening in the summer next year. I loved this place so much, and often find myself thinking about it. Definitely my favourite date night, ever.
