The icing was specially mentioned as it wasn't too sweet. The vegan cake slices were a disappointment. The cake was too dry and I didn't enjoy a bit. After reading the rave reviews, I checked out their website and was indeed impressed with the multitude of product photos. One of them was so in line with what I was after, I called and placed an order for an exact replica of this previous creation, the only difference being the number (50 instead of 16). I requested red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. No new creative brainstorming required. They had a full week's notice for this one carbon copy cake so compared to the review that said they had no problem doing a full sweet table for a party on 3 days' notice, Idk what jacked up the price on this 6" cake to $200.00. I figured this is going to be one perfect cake. I called an hour before pickup to confirm for myself that it was ready and in I came to get it. It was waiting in the back so I waited on it to be brought out and when it did, it looked ok, if a little small. They brought it to the store front to take their stock photo and then had to figure out how to package it. I was pretty surprised when they brought out a regular little box to try to contain this cake for me to bring home, and watched in disbelief as they started figuring out how to finish the job with saran wrap and scotch tape. Yes, really, a tiny little regular cake box not even half the height of the cake, and the girl is pushing down the insert decorations all the way into the cake and applying saran wrap in pieces over it with scotch tape. I am very lucky I was a passenger with someone else driving, because I would have been terrified to have it sitting by itself in a moving car. When I did get it home, the packaging nightmare continued as I spent more than 5 minutes trying to remove the saran wrap taped all over the outside of the box while it stuck to the fondant decorations inside. When I finally got it out of the box, I could see the imperfections on the finish - finger smudge prints on the icing and loose ribbon on the bottom edge. And in the end, it didn't taste any better than a cake made from scratch by any other custom baker, or at home. It was competent, nothing more. Absolute waste of $200.00. Never again.

The cream part seemed to be made of buttercream, and the dough part was also light. I liked the variety of options they had, and the cream part was designed very prettily with a flower motif. I haven't dealt with the customer service or looked at the costs, so I'm not sure how comparable it is to other places (my friends did all that...I just ate it :P) But if you like cupcakes, I would say to try it out.

Now I will forever be ruined on all red velvet cakes thanks to Zehra. No joke. Greatest. Red Velvet. EVAR. I thought wedding cakes were supposed to be dry, and brick-like, and horrible in every way, but apparently they can look AND taste amazing. It's not a bakery where you can just go in and order things off a menu. Obviously, because Fine Cakes by Zehra is only available for bespoke cakes, and desserts designed specifically for weddings and wedding-related festivities. Really, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind about quality (see drooling crazy person rave above) and craftsmanship (see her website). But she knows that. She knows she's good, and you can tell as much when you meet her. She conveys confidence in her creative craft (alliteration for the win) and her interactions were (almost) intimidating for someone like me, who up until two months ago thought that all cakes were made by a lady named Betty Crocker. The consultation (appointment required, you can't just walk in to her studio) involved me, my fiancée, her sister, and my friend (who happened to be with us at the time) meeting with Zehra to discuss what we were wanting. And she managed to make me feel like a scared child while she threw out questions like a drill sergeant. Then it basically followed with what she envisioned for the cake to match our theme, and she was designing on the fly even as we were answering her questions (who am I kidding, I answered no questions). The samples she provided were amazing. I would have been happy continuing to think that wedding cakes are generally terrible tasting, but she's taken that away from me, forever. Then she gave us the price, and my heart skipped a beat. But like I said earlier, she knows she's good. And really, that's my only gripe (which is not really a gripe). She kind of gave off a vibe that said "This is how it is, and you can take it or leave it." And justifiably so because from what I can tell, she's sought after by a lot of people, and she's not really hurting for our business. We still haven't decided if we're going with her yet, because even after cutting our servings down severely, we were still left with a price that was higher than we had budgeted. And by the time we decide, she may very well be booked by someone else. For people who aren't limited by silly things like wedding cake budgets, knock yourselves out. Our birthday girl at work was pleasantly surprised with the goodies and everyone was raving about the cupcakes. I tried the red velvet one and it was so tasty.
