I first discovered Orangetheory Fitness when I was living in Minneapolis. When I moved to…read moreMilwaukee I was devastated to discover that there were no locations here. Devastated. Seriously. I won't say that finding out that Orangetheory was finally opening in Milwaukee was the happiest day of my life, but it probably makes the top five. This is the best workout I have ever had. It's hour-long group fitness that blends cardio and strength training and is all based on your heart rate (everyone wears a heart rate monitor with the results posted on screens in the studio so both you and the trainer can see what's going on). I've been in other group fitness classes where the trainer might tell you to do 6.0 mph on the treadmill. Trouble is, one person's 6.0 leaves them gasping for air and ready to puke while another person's 6.0 is a nice little warm up. Here the trainer will tell you what heart rate zone to get to and whether you get there running 6.0 or walking 3.0 at an incline of 7% is up to you. Because it's so individualized this workout is for anyone - those new to working out, those recovering from an injury, and hard core gym rats alike will all get a good workout here. Though every workout incorporates the treadmill (or bike or elliptical if you are treadmill averse or have an injury that prevents you from getting on the treadmill), rowing machine, TRX and weights, every class is different so you won't get bored. The workout is based on the theory of EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) which finds that getting your heart rate above 84% of your maximum heart rate for 12-20 minutes will boost the calories you burn for up to 36 hours after you've stopped working out. At the end of every class you get a report with your results which shows you how many minutes you spent in each heart rate zone as well as an estimate of calories burned. I don't really think about this too much, all I know is that Orangetheory got me in the best shape of my life. And your first workout is free and there's no contract to sign. What have you got to lose? Try it.

One thing I really love is that I've taken classes with multiple instructors and all of them have been great. They make the workouts approachable while still giving you a good challenge. The front desk staff is always friendly, and the whole environment feels very positive and motivating. I started going to this location after signing up for a free class. I liked it enough, but I felt…read morelike the sales pitch at the end of the class was a bit much, especially at the monthly price points they quotes. A week or two later, I bought a class pack. Truly, the 30 class pack is a value compared to the 4 classes a month plan, and it's taken me about 10 months to use most of it, so I felt like the price point was worth it. I wish I would have known that the heart rate monitor was a separate purchase. I had already snuck a couple hundred into the class pack, so at that point, I felt like I had to, especially since renting one was quoted at $10 per class. But truly, the heart rate monitor makes all the difference. I've left it at home, and I know I don't push myself as hard at class, even though I'm very capable of checking a quick pulse. The biofeedback of knowing what heart rate zone you're in really makes this workout what it is. The instructors are good. They're great at motivating you while correcting form to prevent injury. I started with a sore knee and didn't injure it, so I'm grateful. Facility is clean, and there's a great skyline view of the city while you're doing floor work. I don't go here anymore as I've moved. It used to be walking distance from me, so I never worried about parking (which is metered street). Overall, try out the free class and see if it's worth it for you!

Also they set all of the exercise up for you so you know you workout will be dece. The exercises change everyday so you don't feel like same shit different day. My favorite part is that you travel around nine stations so you only have to do each station for three min, mentally that is nice cuz shit I can do anything for 3 minutes. The work outs are a combination of boot camp, classic all body exercises and boxing. I wish there a more boxing to be honest. I mean I brought my gloves I want to use them and use them right, not just fiddle around with jabs and upper cuts. Like don't come here if you tryna get better at fighting, not going to happen. But the exercises I will say are more creative and effective than I could come up with. There gym equipment is nice and they have a lot of it. The atmosphere is kind of intense and I wish the music was a little less hard core and more hip hop. But people put in work here and the staff seems dedicated. I can say this, I don't like working out and I have joined a number of gyms, this is the one that I have stuck with the longest.
