We have had multiple great outings with Curtis Wright guide Cody. Great attitude and super fun day. We are completely new to fly fishing and Cody has been incredibly patient and helpful. We cannot recommend enough. Great crew in shop as well. Very welcoming.

Falconer Pete and Venus introducing my husband to the basics of falconry

This review is for the Curtis Wright Outfitters falconry experience in Highlands, North Carolina. Which is to say, it's a review for the coolest thing ever. And before you accuse me of exaggerating, may I present as evidence the fact that I got to handle and fly not one--but two!--gorgeous birds of prey? Maybe that doesn't sound as cool in text, but trust me, the actual experience of having some of natures most beautiful hunters perched on your glove is something you won't forget. My husband and I were fortunate enough to work with Sweetie Boy, a Harris' hawk with lots of personality, and Venus, a Peregrine falcon (also with personality to spare). Although Sweetie Boy is the one we primarily worked with, the aptly named Venus is the one who stole my heart and first perched on our gloves. I dare anyone to hold her just once and not feel their money well spent. Falconer Pete is highly experienced; slowly building you up from the basics of glove usage, all the way to having Sweetie Boy fly from person-to-person in the world's greatest game of 'catch.' The slow build should make even skittish and younger visitors feel comfortable. Also helping guest confidence is the fact each bird is obviously both well trained and respected. The drive from Highlands to meet Falconer Pete is short, especially if you're a guest at the nearby Old Edwards Inn or Half Mile Farm. It's also beautiful, so budget time on the way there or back to stop at some of the waterfalls (plural) you will pass. For the true animal lover, I would also say it's worth a day trip from Atlanta for a very memorable birthday or special occasion. Be sure to book as far ahead as possible, as the birds are living creatures with minds of their own and aren't necessarily ready to work at the drop of a hat. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to stop writing this review and get back to figuring out an excuse to go back and visit Venus again.

A question we asked Simple Shot about what looked…read morelike an incomplete slingshot shipment enraged its "president", an arrogant little fellow named Nathan, to such an extent that he felt he had to lie to us and insult us, then dodge any responsibility when he was caught lying. Here's what happened: The video on Simple Shot's website showing how to assemble the slingshot shows that you need 2 small rubber strips to complete the assembly. In our case it looked like we had received only one of these strips in our shipment. When we contacted Simple Shot about having received only one of these rubber strips, they demanded we take a photo of the shipment and send it to them. This seemed rather excessive to us; were they really going to make us jump through hoops for a 2-cent part? We carefully laid out all the parts we received and made sure we took a sharp and clear photo showing the quantity of all parts received and we emailed it to them. The first response from Simple Shot was that our photo was "very blurry." It was not; we made sure it was perfectly sharp and clear before we sent it to them. This was starting to seem weird, like these people were not right in the head and they just wanted to mess with us. Simple Shot then told us we don't need those rubber strips to assemble the product, and they had intentionally sent us only one of the rubber strips as a "complementary, free" part. Huh? That made no sense at all. If the how-to-assemble video shows using 2 of these strips, why are they not needed? And what good does sending us only one do, even if it was "complimentary?" Something was starting to smell really fishy with these people. Simple Shot made it clear to us that they were not going to send us another small rubber strip even though they could have done this for the cost of a 49-cent stamp. They did suggest we use an ordinary household rubber band to replace the missing rubber strip. Huh? They call their product a "precision tool" and a "dangerous weapon" whose misuse could result in "personal injury or even death." No responsible manufacturer of such a product would ever recommend using non-standard parts. We realized then that Simple Shot's sloppy approach to safety likely extended into the manufacture of their factory-supplied parts as well. Maybe they wanted us to injure ourselves. At this point we were not at all comfortable with the bizarre responses from Simple Shot nor the safety of their product. We asked Amazon for a refund. Later that night we got an extremely hateful email from Simple Shot, ridiculing us and mocking us for requesting a second "complimentary, free" rubber strip, but agreeing to supply the missing strip to us. The hate and contempt in this email startled us - we had never seen anything like it. Nobody who treats their customers like this will stay in business for long. A couple of days later we received another email from Simple Shot stating that they believed there were actually two small rubber strips shipped to us but they were fused together so it looked like there was just one. This turned out to be the case, and it revealed two things: 1) Simple Shot has no Quality Control in place for their shipments, and 2) they have no idea what they're shipping to their customers. So the whole story about intentionally sending us only one rubber strip as a "complimentary, free" part was a lie. We believe they told us this lie just to get rid of us rather that look into and resolve what turned out to be a very simple customer shipment issue. We called Nathan out on why he lied to us and his only response was that we could return the slingshot to him for a refund but only if we paid the cost of the shipping. After this experience I would suggest that if you want a slingshot, go to WalMart or a local sporting goods store. You will pay less than half of what these wackos at Simple Shot charge you for a slingshot of equal or better quality, and you will avoid the looney, offensive behavior we had to go through if you have any product issues.
