Dr Barmby will not just design your restoration but will take the time to obtain an understanding of the dynamic forces and subtleties of your bite. He is NOT one of the many dentists who make recommendations just to create income. You can trust him, he is sincerely dedicated to his work. I went to Dr. Barmby for two crowns. I have had several visits to other dentists over the past 4 years and several occasions resulting in some complication and severe lingering pain. It got to the point, I lost faith in anyone working on my teeth and had a bad attitude about dentistry... until now. Dr. Barmby is one of the "Best of the Best". He was patience, answered my questions, returned my calls, even made time for me to come in when I was worried about post procedure pain, and exceptionally professional. When he placed the crowns, he worked over 45 minutes shaping, grinding and smoothing the crown to ensure a perfect fit. Dr. Barmby worked on the crown as he was creating an art masterpiece. I was referred to Dr. Barmby for a molar implant by my dentist, he was said to be top of the field for this. That is what I found during my exam, he explained each step of the process thoroughly and answered all of my questions. He definitely seemed to be expert on the procedure. Unfortunately, as he was not covered under my insurance, I had to go elsewhere to have the procedure done. His front office staff was extremely helpful with this. They explained the insurance situation, what the costs would be and where to go from that point. They were a great help to me, even though I would not be able to have my surgery done with Dr. Barmby. OUTSTANDING Dentist and Staff! I started out this morning with a hygiene appointment. I was greeted by Valerie and Kristi in the front office, both are very warm and welcoming, as well as being very competent. Then, I was told that my usual hygienist was not available and a new hygienist, Nellie, was going to clean my teeth. WOW! What a gem she is...super nice results, my teeth looked amazing! She has an impeccable chair-side manner as well. I was very comfortable with her. Then I moved to another procedure room as the infamous & highly skilled Dr. Barmby, performed the next procedure which was nothing short of jaw-dropping, amazing. His assistant, Anne, was extremely attentive, kind and very competent. Esperanza was part of the procedure as well, and she is also very competent and focused. I have been in the extraordinarily competent care of Dr. Barmby for about 9 + years forging onward with a full-mouth reconstruction. I have held my breath at times as I was not sure how things were going to turn out. Always, to my delight, Dr. Barmby's finished product is perfect, functional and aesthetically pleasing - Every once in a while you meet people who are naturally gifted in their profession, but it's even more remarkable when they are as polished in that gifting as Dr. Barmby is. Truly, I could write a book on my experiences in the dental chair; but, when it comes to Dr. Curtis Barmby & his staff, they are second to none. I am truly grateful to have found them! I had a champion of a dentist named Dr. Kenneth Swenson. He treated me for over 10 years due to a TMJ that developed post a local dentist having ground down some teeth due to a high crown and changing my bite. Long story. Unfortunately, Dr. Swenson retired and he sent me to Dr. Curtis Barmby. Dr. Barmby is an excellent mechanic, but unfortunately, in my case, there were multiple errors that, in my opinion, as a medical advocate, he was embarrassed about, so even after Dr. Sweson hand-picked him to be my dentist, Dr. Barmby flat out after multiple mistakes by staff on making appointments on sending me wrong information via a computer program; on "not" having the "proper" glue to pt on temporary crown and on my barely biting down on it when I got home it fell off; and I bit down on something soft. Then he tried to save a crown and it didn't fit and in the end he had to remake that crown. At another juncture, just before Christmas he put on another crown and it fell off. Another error occurred when the emergency number was in error and I could not get ahold of him or they dentist who was supposed to take his place. There I was x-mas eve with my crown again in my hand and I tried and tired and left messages on this number that his staff had on his recorder and no return call. I had to call my daughter's dentist from S.J. Upon his staff returning to the office, I was told that she couldn't fit me in. My teeth were moving and shifting, which happens when you don't have a tooth in your mouth and I have TMJ. The dentist upon seeing me was upset with what happened to me. I pushed the truth to the hilt and called the doctor who was his stand in. Long story short the stand in dentist's staff were honest. A welcome change from the staff at Dr. Barmby - who I believe had to fear him or in my opinion, had to be mean spirited to treat me as I was treated. I was told that, more or less, I lied. Like, I never called. So, the stand-in Emergency doctor's staff looked into everything. So happens that the message went to a John Muir ER number and no one ever got it. It was Dr. Barmby's staff's error. So he had to make me a new crown after he couldn't make the old one fit. Now, do I think he's a good dentist, yes. Do I think he's a good person. No. He scapegoated me and dumped me well-knowing I had severe bite issues and very few UCSF doctors remain who know how to take care of bite. He flat out kicked me out. First time I'd ever been kicked out of any medical office in my life. Why am I writing. Because they keep sending me appointments to come to get my teeth clean and invited me to write here on yelp. Point: They are still making clerical mistakes, mistakes he refused to look at and his staff is still at it. If you are out of proper glue to keep a crown on, go next door to the dental office and borrow some, don't send your patient home to have the crown fall off immediately. A good dentist with excellent skills failed to do the right thing and for those of you who need expert care; you'll probably be very happy. In my case, I lost faith in his staff, in him because he kept making mistakes. He needs to go to computer school or send his staff. He has a wonderful assistant with whom I very much enjoyed talking; however, when the crown fell off or something else happened she was like a mama lion and the dentist and not the patient was put first.
