The staff is beyond nice and so professional that you immediately feel that you have nothing to worry about.... and then, you get to meet the nicest doctor on the Planet... Dr. James Van Horn. A warm smile and a hug. Your worries melt away. My right hip was replaced by Dr. Van Horn at the Grants Pass Surgery center. They too require a huge shout out for courtesy and professionalism. I walked in the door at 5:45 AM and by 7:30 I was in surgery. By 9:30 AM, I was awake and eating a sandwich... I took a pain pill, got up and walked through the center, went to the restroom and back to recovery. I had a little more to eat and was then released by 11:30 AM. The pain was all but Non-Existent. I made it home and was walking in my Neighborhood by 1:00 PM! My neighbors asked me when I had surgery. When I said 5 hours ago... they were amazed. I had to use a walker for 3 days and a cane for a couple of weeks, not so much for pain but for safety. By the Sunday following the surgery (just 3 days later), I stopped taking the pain medication and had no real pain at all. I do recommend that you do follow the Pre-Op and the Post-Op Physical Therapy very carefully!!! Keep your leg elevated and iced for two weeks when you are not walking. Also, on your own, exercise a heavily several weeks in advance... it is well worth your time and you can make it fun... remember that, you are getting a "New lease on life",,, Don't waste it! I'll add pictures here that tells about my experience, the last 3 I took this morning showing all the dry skin on both legs. For the past 13 years I have never been without pain and problems. 'HERE IS MY WRITTEN RECORD" After receiving new hip 9 Apr. 2007 I started having problems with my legs (swelling and sudden sharp leg pains). From my knees down my legs turned red. 11\fs26 Sep. Got letter from Dr Van Horne office about bad DePuy ASR hip replacement implant from 9 Apr. 2007. 23 Sep. Called Dr Van Horne and was told to call Johnson & Johnson for Claim #. Called Johnson & Johnson and was given Claim # 186102756. Called Dr Va Horne's office and left Claim # on voice mail. 28 Sep. Appointment with Dr Countiss, was told I should contact Dr Van Horne about making an appointment. 29 Sep. Called Dr Vanhorne about appointment and got voice mail. 30 Sep. Dr Vanhorne's office called and gave appointment dates 4 Nov. for Imaging and 18 Nov. to see Dr Vanhorne. 5 Oct. Johnson & Johnson called to give me some information and ask me if Dr Vanhorne had recommended the DePuy hip. ( The answer to that was yes) Received letter from Broadspire informing me that DePuy would pay all of my out of pocket expenses including the deductibles and co-pays. 8 Oct. Called Black Chapman & Webber. 4 Nov. Went to Imaging, 18 Nov. Went to Paragon (Dr Vanhorne) and was told that I should have hip replaced as soon as possible due to problems shown on Imaging. (Note: I was first scheduled for Surgery the last of Jan. but did not go to surgery till the 24th of Feb.. Dr Vanhorne felt I needed to go to Radiation for treatment just before surgery. Treatment was $2413.00) 29 Nov. Started Physical Therapy. (approx. $169.00 a session for a total of over $4000.00.) December: 1, 6, 8,13,15, 20, 22 Physical Therapy. 24 Feb. Day of surgery. Reported early so I could go to Radiation just before surgery. Radiation was needed to stop unwanted bone growth caused from the first hip replacement 9 Apr. 2007. Dr Countiss ask to assist in this surgery and Dr Vanhorne allowed him to do so. I was later told by Dr Countis that Dr Vanhorne got a little rough and had to apply a lot of pressure trying to grind out my new hip joint, He told me that it took most all his strength to hold me onto the operation table. 27 Feb. Discharged from 3 Rivers Hospital after surgery to go home. March - Physical Therapy 10, 14, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, and 30 March. 28 Mar. Appointment at Paragon (Dr Vanhorne). April - Physical Therapy 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22,27, and 29 (last day) April. My symptoms since Hip Surgery 9 Apr. 2007. (1) I have experienced fatigue ever since first surgery. (2) Had sensations down my leg off and on day and night of like a hot electrical shock, with tingling. (3) Up on standing I was unable to start walking for a few moments. I would try to, but my leg wouldn't work. (4) I had as much pain in my hip as I had before my first surgery and I still limped as bad on it as I did before, in spite of how hard I tried not to. (5) I have been unable to do a lot of the things I normally did all the time, before my first surgery, like mowing the lawns, doing a little work on my pickup, and things with my horses, which was my hobby. Also I couldn't do home improvement projects like I had in the past. (6) Problems standing up and setting down. (Always) (7) Hard getting in and out of car. (Always) (8) Right leg was asleep and numb almost constantly after surgery. Even woke me up at night. Right leg gets numb setting in car. Sometimes there is a pain similar to frost bite or lack of circulation and the numbness can causes problems when driving . (Always when over half an hour) (9) Sore muscles all the time in lower back, hips, and legs. (10) Can't take a step for a couple moments after standing up. Muscles are stiff and must loosen up before stepping away. (Always) (11) Hurts to walk. (12) Can't bend over to pick something up off from floor. Back, legs and hips hurt when trying to do so. (13) Back is always sore. (14) Can't put sock on right foot or tie shoe without help. (15) Legs swell, gets burning sensation and sometimes itch real bad. Sometimes I draw blood from scratching. (16) Bursitis in left hip. (17) I've noticed that my right foot sometimes turns in when I'm walking. Maybe due to tightening of leg muscles. (18) Lots of headaches. (19) Laying on my left side will cause my hip to ache. (20) One of the most challenging aspects of of the entire experience has been trying to stay in a good frame of mind. I have never liked to see people set around and feel sorry for themselves, so I have dealt with it on a day to day basis. It is now 2/4/2026 "Note, after all these years I still suffer leg pains and skin problems" In total I have had 3 hip replacements, 2 on my right side and 1 on my left.

I feel this is a waste of Medicare dollars and I probably should report them under the FWA (fraud, waste, and abuse) directives form CMS.

Juan was my nurse getting me checked in, he made me feel loved and cared for. Checked on me constantly before surgery and even called me the next morning to check on me. Dr. Hurbis did my surgery and I highly recommend him as a doctor for all ear nose and throat needs. Dr. Meeker was my anesthesiologist and never left my side during surgery. I was out within 15 seconds so he must've done a great job. And Drew was my nurse in recovery. She took great care of me. I don't remember much of that time but my mom said she was very loving also. I was very hot when I got out of surgery. She got me a wet rag, water, helped me get dressed and even walked me to the pickup. I am healing nicely. And got my gauze taking out this morning but am still in the healing process and sleeping a lot. Thank you to everyone that has reached out to check on me. Really know how to make a girl feel loved!

So when I got referred for evaluation I was looking forward to it. As a retired medical professional and after years of dealing with my spine related issues. I have had several surgical consultations. Usually educational but surgical intervention has never been an option. With some scary mobility issues developing recently, I was hoping to find out what had changed. My first appointment with Dr. Curcin was a little concerning as he came into the room empty-handed and had apparently not bothered to scan through my medical records..asking me to explain why I was there. There is far too much going on with my spine for me to 'fill him in'..this was incredibly unprofessional, to begin with. I try to explain the highlights of the issue, he states I need an MRI, of which my physician had already ordered. I returned after getting the MRI, and as I am waiting, I can hear the doctor walk up to the door, open the file and stand there and read it...all of 60 seconds. He then walks in and gives me a one-sentence synopsis of my MRI and we were done. He shows me no MRI report, goes into NO detail. He is interested in NO further discussion and gets defensive and pissy when I attempt to discuss it further..Literally saying "What do you expect me to do Ms Alexander"..VERY RUDE! Cut me off and developed defensive body language. He had NO intention of going into any details. WHAT did I just PAY for? I can read the MRI report and glean the information he provided! WHAT a WASTE of money! A more qualified professional sits down, a report in hand, pictures to show are even better..and explains what the MRI found in DETAIL..and a good physician uses their skills to evaluate the new report compared to the old. as it had been 10 years since the last MRI. I got NONE OF THAT! He actually tried to tell me there were no changes in 10 years..that is blatant BS! Too many physical symptoms directly contradict that, yet these symptoms were being completely ignored.. He literally REFUSED to discuss the MRI further. Obviously, no surgical money to be made on me..so we are done here..get out. The interaction took 5 minutes or less. I was so disgusted by his unwillingness to even discuss the MRI..almost felt like I should apologize for wasting his time. I walked out of there in tears of frustration and dissapointment..Not that there was no surgical intervention..but there had been NOTHING learned or gained from a VERY expensive MRI and Consultation Fee! I am feeling entirely ripped off and as if I was mistreated by an arrogant, unconcerned medical provider. In all fairness... the rest of the staff have been very nice. My friend, who did get surgery, was treated by another physician and they were awesome. But, apparently, not everybody working there is on the same page with patient care. What a shame.

Their office Mgr repeatedly lied to me and then wouldn't call me back. I've had to go out of area after a long delay of trying to do it locally. I highly recommend going to Roseburg for any orthopedic needs. They are very efficient and have very transparent systems. Also Roseburg has more advanced surgical technologies than Coos county providers. South Coast Orthopaedic is trying to overcome some big challenges in their business model, and it doesn't appear that everyone there is on board with it.

This geography and location really helped preserve my sanity. On my work days, I provided VIP service to all patients I took care of. I knew this was a tiny hospital and I would probably work alone. That's fine, but I expect adequate equipment and a safe working environment free of disrespect. Bonus if the manager was more supportive and true to his word. Sadly, there will always be a high attrition rate. Staff and travelers would stay longer if they were valued.

Everyone was very warm and understanding. The doctors were very patient and listened. The nurses were the same. I actually had a favorite nurse, Ani. I had to stay for a couple of days so I did see a rotation of staff, Very happy with the way I was treated. Unfortunately after a couple of weeks I had to return for more care. I was greeted like an old friend. Gold Beach Hospital has what we refer to as 1950 small town charm.
