The smells coming…read morefrom the kitchen were so tantalizing as I walked past that I couldn't help going in and ordering a meal. That turned out to be an excellent decision because the food I had for a couple of lunches was pretty good. Most customers choose a mains style, such as "Punjabi" or "New Delhi" or "Goan" (I don't remember the exact names, but you get the idea), then choose a kind of meat (lamb, chicken, etc) that will be cooked in the sauce, or choose the vegetarian thali option. You specify the level of spiciness/heat you want -- dont' worry, "medium hot" in this kitchen is pretty mild as far as In addition to the main dish, each thali comes with an order of fragrant rice, some small servings of vegetables dishes, a bit of freshly-baked naan, and a sweet dish. The restaurant also offers snacks like samosas, but I didn't try any of these. (The samosas seemed a little small for the price, and not enough customers seemed to be ordering them for me to try any until I knew the restaurant better.) Mango lassis seem to be a popular drinks option -- the one I tried was a bit tarter and not quite as sweet as I usually like. (It would also be great if they offered plain sweet lassis -- I didn't bother to ask if I could get that instead of a mango lassi.) Prices could be just a bit a little lower (a thali costs about €10-11, which seems somewhat high considering the small quantity of meat in the main dishes), but overall this is an excellent choice for a quick meal if you happen to be in the area.

Decore wise Thali must be considered as the most sober and northern European minimalistic style Indian restaurant/fast food place I ever been to. This is nor a bad thing or a good thing it is however very unusual and unexpected. The categorization of the food in main regional cooking style is another rationalization/lean production attempt that is a so so. Some definitely better than the others but still you are served same dishes just differently spiced. Portions and flavours are just like the rest at Thali down scaled, rationalized and modernized to a fast food chain style that is for an Indian place, in my opinion, impersonal, bland and somewhat sterile. Price-wise Thali is not an affordable Indian place as one might be used to having tried many in other European countries but considering the fact Austria is not a cheap country I'll say it is not all that bad.

A really good choice when traveling in Vienna if you get a craving for Indian food. I came here with my brother, his wife and their 2 kids, and the bill, including drinks and dessert, was less than €100. We had enough leftovers to eat the next day. Among all of us, we had the samosas, which were fantastic: large, freshly cooked and excellent flavor. I had the chicken tikka masala, and my brother too, while my sister in law had the muttar paneer, which she absolutely loved. I really liked the chicken tikka as well - it was rich, spicy and abundant. I highly recommend it. We ordered 2 sides of rice and it is a LOT, same with the naan, it was a LOT of naan, both also very good. The presentation of the dishes is cool - I got mine in a small copper pan atop a small candle that kept it warm. I tried a sip of the mango lassi and a bit of the rice pudding. The lassi was tasty but I was disappointed with the rice pudding because even though the flavor was good (cinnamon and cardamom and vanilla, yum!), the texture was not right. It was more a liquid than pudding, I didn't like that. The service was alright - I'm not a good judge because I'm used to US servers who are working for tips, but our server was fine. Make sure you ask for water because you'll need it if you order something spicy, and if you're used to ice water, make sure you specify that too. Our server spoke English, so I didn't struggle at all. I enjoyed the decor. There is a bar and a "quick kebab" takeout side. Writing this review made me hungry for this food !

The unique feature here is that they serve dishes with not too much chilly heat but offer three spicy condiments that allow you add all the heat you will need. Food was absolutely delicious and generous quantities. Dinner for two with beer and gin and tonics came to just under €50 which I was happy with. I ate too much of course and had fun chatting with two groups from England at tables next to us. We will return here again I'm sure. On a side note I left my hat in error. Can back next day, they hadn't opened yet but my hat was inside and I was able to retrieve it.

One of Vienna's best Indian restaurants lies in the charming Spittelberg neighborhood of Vienna. It…read moreis called Zum Moghulhof. This is a popular eatery with the locals but many people also come from across Vienna to eat here. It is very attractive on the inside with many Indian artifacts and paintings. But of course it's the food that draws the crowds. What I like about Zum Moghulhof is that they serve Thali platters - in fact four different ones. Too few western restaurants serve Thali but they are a tasty Indian adventurous meal - yes you never know what exactly will be on a Thali platter. I ordered the mixed meat & vegetable one, and very much enjoyed the various Indian treats. Their condiment offerings which include a mango chutney and a spicy red sauce add to the flavors. One small suggestion concerning the condiments - they should always be refilled for each dining party. I don't like to find table condiments or relishes with only a little left. All in all though, I can see no reason why Zum Moghulhof won't continue to attract many diners to come through its doors and dine like a Moghul in Vienna!
