To be totally candid, this is the worst comics and cards shop I've ever been to, not to say that they don't have a good selection of comics (not so much cards). I've been a few times now, and every time I walk in, it seems to be lacking in organization, friendly atmosphere, promotions, style, and customer service. During my most recent visit, the shop appeared to be the most disorganized and uninviting I have ever experienced. I got two things, which he rang up, and then he scanned another bar code taped to the wall, like I wouldn't notice, and then tried to overcharge me. I was like, "Uh... sorry but what?" And then he took it back, giving me a flimsy excuse, saying, "Oh, I forgot we changed the price of those." Which... who the hell knows what he was referring to. Maybe I could give him the benefit of the doubt, but the dude has always felt especially weird to me, and this seemed scammy. Also, when I asked if he had the most popular and best sleeves for cards that EVERYONE uses, he snickered and mentioned how they got rid of those years ago...... I don't know a single other shop that doesn't carry them. It's actually crazy. I won't be going here again. There need to be some serious improvements made. Here's some advice: you're in one of the wealthiest places in California, and therefore, the world. Maybe try to capitalize on that. read more

A good solid comic store, but could use improvement. Others had a great experience but for me, when I walked in I wasn't greeted even though no one else was in the store. I wasn't helped. And the selection is only okay. A smaller shop, they don't have a lot of options or back stock. Their bins are not extensive. And they have limited items. They do sell some Magic and Pokémon cards, but again limited in stock. SELECTION: They do have a decent selection of new comics and the new books are easy to find. However the older books are arranged in a haphazard way. If there is any sense to them, they don't make it clear. I suspect they are arranged by week of distribution, but again, can't confirm because there was no direction. They don't carry a lot of indie books if that's your thing, but they do have a wide variety of DC and Marvel books at reasonable prices. Not a lot of upcharging. SERVICE: Not the best. Maybe it was just my experience. Maybe they were having an off day. Maybe it was a new employee. Whatever. You only get one chance at a good first impression. COST: Normal. Service was OK as well he asked if you need help but we really didn't we just browsing checking out all of the assortment of comics the main stream stuff has displayed my everything else is in boxes for you to search through on the side. read more

Eh, not worth going out of the way for, but if you're in Monterey it's at least something. For my trip to Monterey, outside of the aquarium and food, I figured I'd scope out the comic book scene. This appears to be the only spot in the area and doubles as both the LCS and LGS. From the outside it is pretty impressive - corner spot in a small strip mall, across from a 7-11, lots of signs detailing stuff. A sense that Friday Night Magic is probably fun. And then you walk in and it's like "Oh, okay I guess." The one woman staff was incredibly helpful - the second I walked in she asked if I needed help finding anything, and I figured I would take her up on that offer. She directed me to the back issue sections to the right of the store and was honest that it wouldn't be that full. I found 3 issues I needed, and considered it a success. I decided to walk around and check out the rest of the store - to the left is the newer issues and trades; there is some art on the wall; and behind the counter were Magic cards. I also picked up a Gideon Spellbook. I am incredibly spoiled - I have Cape and Cowl down the road from me in Oakland and the vibes are completely different. And I don't know if they host tournaments or other special events here. If you live in the area, are visiting, or just need some recent issues it is worth checking out. But don't make a trip just for this. read more

I think the guy behind the counter was annoyed when I came in. Don't blame him though, I was a tourist and had to dressed up like Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Selection was very few here and there. They should put all of the TCG stuff in one area. I think they should also put some of their graded comics in a stand or something to display some of their prize comics. Just a though/suggestion. So these awesome reviews for this place is either bias or I am just spoiled by las vegas comic book stores. Cons: This store was empty. Ok, sure it's Christmas week but if I went to my local stores in Vegas there would still be a ton of comics to choose from. Unimpressive. Really small selection of random stuff. They definitely don't keep their stock up to date (a lot of empty shelving). As for the staff, the guy behind the counter didn't even say hello when I walked in. Out of the six current and popular titles I was looking for they had only one. While this is a smaller comic shop, they have been incredibly reliable and helpful in my experience. I love that they still have a good variety of comics as well. They have your DC, Marvel, Image, Boom and Dynamite regularly stocked. The staff is very well informed and usually has the answers if you have questions. I've had savers at four other comic shops through out Northern California in the past ten years or so. For the past year I've had my saver here and I am very happy. :) read more

My wife and I came here for fun while on our honeymoon. We found a good assortment of new comics, but it lacked older comics like i like collecting. Guess I should have known by the name. They were very helpful in helping me find a good comic book for my wife! Her and I read through three issues together. So basically this place rocks. read more

Current Comics is a good little locally owned comic shop. They make me look forward to Wednesdays and seeing what comics came out. Once you've come into the shop a couple of times the staff recognize you and will greet you by name. The staff are friendly and very helpful read more

I paid a visit to this location while on vacation in Monterey. The staff is very attentive and polite but there just isn't anything that comes out to grab the customer. The layout is a bit segmented and scattered but not in a way that invites you to explore. You think you're missing something but you're not. There are tons of action figures behind two glass displays but they're all knocked over and their not for sale. That's a waste of shop space. I'm sure they can get/order whatever you want, especially if you're a regular customer. It could be a more inviting and organized place. read more

im a big comic book collector,.im on vacation and wanted to see if this place had a comic book shop. So i found Current comics. i went in there and they had really cool comics and toys in there, they had new comics , back issue and great old comics like silver, bronze, current, I found some really great silver age comics and the guy who was there was really nice and helpful. the price was really really good and like i said i walked out of there with some really good silver age comics and 1 golden age. They had comic book supplies and boxes which was really great.When i come back here again, I would so go back and buy comics from there. read more

Ive been to this shop a few times now so I am updating this review. Pros- The staff and owner are really great friendly and helpful. The selection of newer comics is good. They have card game events. They will order back issues for you if they can get them. Cons- Limited back issues on hand and Graphic novel section seemed a little thin although it seems to get better each time I go. With all that said I am glad we have a comic shop in Monterey and you should support these guys and buy some comics. read more

This place is very run down. They had a better setup a couple of years ago but now it's just a shell of a comic store. They vey little in way of graphic novels and comic related toys or collectibles . Most of the single issue books look to be sun damaged. It looks as if the focus on Magic The Gathering cards instead of comics. I went with intention of purchasing some items but do to the lack selection I passed. read more

So I just moved to Monterey and was so pleased to see there was a comic shop. I made my way down to check out Current Comics and I have to say I was really blown away. 1st let me tell you if you have ever been to a "normal" comic shop this is not one of them. If your looking for older books (any thing 5 years or beyond) your going to the wrong shop. They live up to there name "CURRENT COMICS". As soon as I walked in I was a little nervous that this is where I'm going to have to do my shopping for the next year or so. But after a few seconds in the shop I felt like I had been shopping there for years. The guy who works there Ben is with out question the most friendly and helpful person I have ever seen at a comic shop. Showed me around the shop helped me with some of the newer indie titles I have never heard of. After being there for while the guy even offered me a cup of coffee (Which I guess they do with most regulars). I figured he was the owner and when I asked him he said "Oh I'm not the owner. I'm just a humble servant to the people.". He was even wearing a suit. If you ever seen the Simpson he would be the Anti-Comic Book Shop Guy. So not only was I pleased the 1st time when I went back a few days later it was just as good. Plus when they open on New Comic Day they have the stuff all ready to go. read more

This store seems to cater to TCG players. Right when I walked in I noticed that the shop looked empty, and after browsing for maybe 10 minutes I realized my initial reaction was correct. It had a shelf for the current weeks comic books that came out, as well as a small selection of single comics. This place also had the current Magic the Gathering sets and some other card games. Overall, this shop's inventory is for those looking for either new comic books or Trading Card Games. Not recommended if you're looking to find anything other than that. read more

Went into this store with the intent of buying a few comic books. When I walked in there was a ton of space and very little inventory. I decided to walk around and see if I could find what I was looking for. After ten minutes of trying to figure out where specific comics were, I got a little frustrated and left. My husband and son really enjoy going to and buying from this locally owned comic shop. Ben (the guy usually behind the counter) is awesome and attentive to all the clients in the store. The owner is a comic book nut himself and is very knowledgeable. I love the collection of figures around the store. There is something for everyone here! Especially love free comic book day!! The staff, collection of books (single issue and trade) are phenomenal. The service is pretty damn good and their knowledge of what's in print and what's canon for the comics is spot on. If you have any questions, they're available to answer and act very professional, while also being personable. I've gotten almost all of my collection from here and they have pretty regular sales and promotions. I highly recommend this location as well as the one in Salinas if you're closer to that one. read more

Went there with my wife, daughter, grandson, granddaughter's bf and his son one Saturday afternoon. Older man appeared almost out of nowhere, and he just glared at our party the entire time we were there. Felt very uncomfortable there as if any second he would accuse us of taking something, standing behind us like a gunslinger. We did not stay long, as not to expose any of the young ones to modern day crow. read more
