10/5/2023 - Third Angle production of Slipping off the Petticoat
Mikhail H.

I had not heard of this space and plan to keep an eye out now after having such a great time. I will say that I would show up earlier as the seating was awkward. It felt a touch cramped just where we were placed so some of the seating seems a bit tighter then others - especially if you are watching a show and having some snacks and drinks. Speaking of snacks - I was not expecting anything at all but love the options! I went with a vegan and she had options which is always delightful. That popcorn smelled amazing but I was so glad I grabbed their charcuterie plate which had a nice pile of meats and cheese, yummy crackers, fruits and veggies. It was great with some soda since I had actually forgot to eat. The show itself was amazing! This was a Third Angle production of Slipping off the Petticoat. What a female empowered piece with some amazing prose from Edna St Vincent Millet, Tatiana de la Tierra and Gertrude Stein (to name just a few). Hannah Penn's voice was incredible and she used her delightful range of vocal training to exhibit opera and jazz with Maria Garcia on the piano. There was a piece by Hannah's daughter who is crazy young and clearly already immensely talented. It sounds like they have much different performances here too.

If you're looking for Improv - you found a great and vibrant space to laugh. Tons of show options. Really funny and strong cast. Great date night event. Food. Drinks. Street parking. Fr Thank me later.

Overall, I was pretty damn impressed. I'm used to Harvey's Comedy Clib and Helium Comedy Club. We came with a group of 4 with fairy low expectations but we were very surprised how well the performance went. Will definitely be back!!! Food was great. Recommend the popcorn, pizza and spinach dip. They have a decent selection of beer and hard alcohol.

I went to see my daughter's first improv show, and it was absolutely exhilarating! Street parking was available, I guess people are still being careful about going out (as am I, masked up). That made it easier to arrive in Portland's usual pouring rain. The place was packed, everyone was wearing a mask, and the atmosphere was wonderful. I did not eat any food nor buy anything to drink, I promise I will next time! They invited everybody over for New Year's Eve--in case you haven't made reservations yet, hurry up they still have places. Great vibe, very cool!

"I peed a little". "did he just say that?". these are things you hear in CCT. what a cool place. They remodeled in the last year and the stage is much nicer! they are getting better and better. the food is great for such a small kitchen. The acts are improving and seem to really like each other on stage. it is almost like we are just watching this all unfold in someone's home. So very impressed with the comedy and care that goes into the productions. When you go to the early show they late you stay for the late show for free..... SWEET!

So good! My first improv show in Portland and it was the perfect mix of silly and unpredictable. Will definitely bring a group back soon!

Are all shows for all ages? Can a 20 year old get in?

not all shows are for all ages, (USUALLY the really late ones). but the majority are for all ages. if you're in doubt on a certain show listed just call the office, but…

I chose refund. 7-10 days, supposedly. At this point, I don't want to think about the $110 dollar comedy show tickets I couldn't attend. I want that out of mind. I randomly decide to check my card to see if it's been refunded after my May 29th refund request. June 22, nothing in my account. Notify MGMT with receipts. They punt the ball to the ticket vendor on the 23rd (supposedly). 8 days later after correspondence to get this corrected, no response (June 30). I call the vendor SeatEngine, and they've purportedly not heard from Helium. They made it right, processed my refund and sent me a confirmation. Again, I don't want to be thinking about a comedy show I now can't attend because it was rescheduled. Helium, this is on you. You could have at least reached out and said something like "sorry for the inconvenience; we reached out and they're fixing it for you (smiley face business nod). Nope. Called again today, left my information. Like the 3rd or 4th time they've not answered or returned my voicemails. I certainly do not trust this business with my money. Unfortunately, as a new city resident... I will not be visiting one of the (supposedly) good clubs in my new city. You have multiple voicemails and emails, you've given me nothing. This is on you Helium.

So many of the smaller venues are a bit tragic and in older neighborhoods, it could go either way. What a truly great surprise because it was really well decorated. So creative and unique - love it! Even with the very open floor plan it, somehow, feels intimate inside when you are seated for a show. I had the pleasure to see Canon Shakespeare perform Julius Caesar: "Mischief, thou art afoot." I was impressed at the use of lighting for the stage show. I was able to get a reasonably priced cup of wine at their concessions plus I loved that they had quite a few options for non alcohol and snacks available. My only complaint was only seeing one of the restrooms! One of the staff said that the restrooms were both themed and that one was themed 'Ladies Room' even though they are unisex restrooms... But each time I was in range, that one was in use. The other bathroom was spacious, very clean and covered in The Last Supper art pieces. Perhaps someone had a religious experience in the restroom?

Love the break from the norm: amateur (and semi-pro?) improv working on their craft, A/C working just as hard as the performers to work the room with something to chill you out. So just know that you may have to look a little bit harder to find a spot when it's busier. It's nice though since parking is free in this area. The overall staff this venue were really nice and helpful. There is food and drinks available and prices are typical of theaters. The theater itself is quite large inside. This was a show that I'd been looking forward to for 4.5 months, since I'd bought the tickets then, and spent over $100 on them. The assaulter/woman, was seated at least two feet behind me said clearly "this woman's hair is all over in my space". Then I heard a rip and sharp pain, and my hair had been torn out. A big huge part of it, to where I was bleeding and bald in a patch. I told her she ripped out my hair, and she said "your hair was in my space; it was an accident". My husband heard this too. The staff at Alberta Rose knowing I was bleeding and hurt, gave me an ice pack and moved my husband and I outside the theater area to stools in the bar, which is outside the theater area. That's all they were willing to do. The woman who assaulted me was free to watch the show in peace. I called the police, but the staff of Alberta Rose kept reinforcing to them that the woman who assaulted me and her friends had a different story. The friends and my assaulter said my hair got caught in my seat; there was no assault. Hearing this, as well as there are no cameras in the theater, the police didn't even bother to speak with the women, or her friends. If the Alberta Rose Theater staff had brought out the assaulter, as the police had initially asked, before the staff was so dismissive, everyone would've clearly seen that the area of my hair that was pulled out, is a layered area, and it's only about a foot-long. It is impossible for it to have gotten caught in my seat. I was too upset to realize and point this out at the time. The police did get a picture of my bloody head, and were taking this situation and assault seriously prior to the staff being so dismissive. Besides the shock and pain, another reason I was so upset is that the woman who attacked me was still in the theater, behind my family, who I was no longer able to sit or be with. Even worse the staff wouldn't even let me back in to see my family after the show was done. I didn't even see the show, and the artist I hold so dearly in my heart, at all after the assault. She's literally of my favorite artists. This was my fourth show at The Alberta Rose, in so many months. I'm still in a lot of pain nearly 2 hours later. And my assaulter was just allowed to walk away. Alberta rose has been one of my favorite places in Portland. Now I'm sitting in my driveway at home in tears over what happened to me, without their keeping me safe, or defending me in any kind of way.
