I came here to fix a flat tire that my bike had for the past 3 weeks. The team inspected my bike and in less than 5 minutes they found out that it was a small leak in the inner tube. The Tube was around 10-15$ to replace but I ended up getting a new bell as my old one was broken. They even added it on for me. The staff was very nice and I feel like I got a good bang for my buck on what I purchased. I also wanted a phone holder but I found that a little cheaper on Amazon. The people who work here are super friendly and willing to help. Stuff here is pricey but high quality. I do wish they would carry more small sizes. This place is as good as it gets. Located right in the city, it is a prime location for travelers, students, and local residents to take advantage of their bike sales, athletic/outdoor gear, and repair shop. My poor bike had a bad tire, and it was fixed for a little under $25 in less that 20 minutes. I was amazed at the friendly, quick, and knowledgeable service. I am not a pro biker at any means, but I did not feel uncomfortable in this store! We stopped in Nashville for a last-minute weekend vacation. We did not rent a car so we did hop a couple of Uber's over to the university when we came across the store. Nashville isn't by any means a skiing town but this store definitely had a ski vibe in it. It's all rough-hewn Lumber that had a lot of really great outdoor gear that to my surprise and Delight was not priced insanely High either. The store looks like it was a couple of stores they just not walls out of and it ends up dumping into a coffee shop which actually made it that much nicer. While I'm not really into fishing this place certainly was set up as a Fishing Pro Shop. They also had quite a bit of camping gear but most of it seem to be Outdoor Clothing related and I was able to find a very nice shirt / jacket that I like to wear about this time of year. There are some Brands I've never heard of which I was totally okay with. I kind of wish we were able to return to the store without having to take a flight but our one visit will have to do. Everyone there was really nice and despite its crunchy granola feel, it was actually very accommodating to someone who is probably twice the age of their current clientele and totally not a millennial. I came in to check out waders because I'm still pretty new to fly fishing and haven't been able to find some that fit and are affordable. I also just moved from Colorado, so I was completely unfamiliar with the waters of Tennessee...which was extremely intimidating. The intimidation melted away immediately. The guys were super helpful from the second we entered the fly fishing section. I was given advice on how and where to fly fish for bass, and they even put together a fly selection to get me started. They were extremely helpful as I tried on waders and boots for the first time, and patient as I walked around to ensure the boots were comfortable. The best part was that the waders were a past season's style, so they were even able to offer a discount. I've been super happy with my purchases and was able to hit the water feeling confident that I had the appropriate gear for mid-February fishing. read more

On the off chance that you have a death wish and want to fulfill that by riding a bicycle through Nashville -- where there are few sidewalks and even fewer shoulders (!) -- you can rent a bicycle from Cumberland Transit! The store is pretty nice - it's clean, well lit and has a funky feel of a building that has been converted from something else (multiple levels, creaky wood floors). There are loads of all the usual things you'd expect - shoes & clothing for a wide variety of outdoor pursuits. AND. A really cute dog who will love it if you play with him. 'nuff said. This is a great locally owned sporting goods store. You will find anything you need here! Biking, hiking, running, swimming, mountain climbing, kayaking, what else is there??? Probably a lot more! Their selection of bikes and bike gear was especially impressive. It's a huge store for what it looks like on the outside...there is an upstairs, and several different rooms. They seem to only carry the finest gear as well. I don't buy a ton from here, but that's mainly because I'm not terribly sporty--but I do purchase my Rainbow flip-flops here. They have a ton to choose from, and lots of good brands. You can also join them for hikes, canoeing, biking retreats, etc. They have a lot of free day trips you can go on. So I walked in already wanting a bike. I had visited Cumberland Transit before, just looking around, you know. I knew they had good bikes and had been around for awhile. Every time I looked at my old, ratty, department store bike, I'd imagine how much cooler I'd look on a new one, probably one from Cumberland. But walking in today, I tried not to get my hopes up. I started looking around again, telling myself I didn't have to buy anything today. Even though their prices were good. Even though they had some very tempting bikes. Within a couple minutes, Keith the salesman walks up and asks what I'm looking for. I tell him, and he shows me a couple. He notices that I'm salivating over one, and lets me take it out back and squirrel around on it. He found the right size for me, and made sure it was what I was looking for. You know where this is going. Right at the moment I was thinking "man, I want to take this thing home," Keith smoothly asks, "so, do you want to take this home today?" A-yes please, and some accessories on the side. Best part, they took my old bike off my hands to donate to The Workshop Oasis, which builds bikes for kids. THE STORE: 4-Stars This is a really big store - bigger inside that it looks from the outside. It also has two levels, with most of the road bikes upstairs, plus other stuff up there, too. It's well laid out, and offers a pretty broad selection. Check-out is quick and easy. BICYCLE SERVICE: 2-Stars I took a bike wheel in to be trued-up. I specifically explained the symptoms and asked if they could fix it. YES, I was told. Great. But when I picked it up, it still had the same symptom. When I asked about the problem, the dude just lectured me on having old parts, and said "maybe that's as good as we could get it!" Well, I didn't pay for "maybe." They took my money and did not offer any caveat like "hey, our tech said this part is old and he tried, but could not get it any better." Unfortunately, it felt a bit like the dreaded "bike shop snobbery," where anything that's not "105-or-better" is crap, and not worth maintaining. To be fair, on a previous visit, I got great selling-floor help from another bike-section guy, who advised me just which parts to get. So maybe it's down to the individual working there. If you like local places and don't want to get in the buzz of the large department superbox sports store, Cumberland Transit is a good option. The selection is strong and the prices are competitive. The location is spectacular on the main West End strip adjacent to Vanderbilt. One joy of shopping local is the individual attention. Unfortunately, I haven't found it in any of my shopping excursions to C.T. Today, I journeyed in to shop for $2000+ road bikes. The place was virtually consumerless. I was notice by over three employees, yet none offered to help. I wasn't even told goodbye as the guy at the front register made I contact and I smiled. Unable to gain attention, I took my business to another store, sadly. I do love this place and their vibe, I just hope that someone stumbles across this who can help improve the place. Got some chacos here about two weeks ago for a trip to Mexico and was pretty impressed with the service of the lady in the shoe department. She helped us find the perfect fitting pair of chacos possible. She knew exactly what style would work best with our foot structures. Mine is a bit more arched and his is totally flat so she recomm need different sizes and shoe types to help us. We each got a pair and left happy. Now we are back from the trip and did quite a bit of walking and hiking through mountains. The chacos worked great and left our feet happy. Definitely try to break in chacos before you go on any trip. We could have had a bad time had we not broken in the shoes before going. Cumberland has a TON of merchandise. You would never tell from just seeing the storefront but it is huge inside. read more

If you need something to make your outdoor adventure complete, this is where you need to go. The store reminds me of a more unique locally owned REI. The staff is extremely nice and always willing to help you make a decision if you cant decide on your own. Or if you just to talk to them about cool day trips that your planning, they always have great suggestions. The store also plans various different trips. From bike riding excursions and day hikes, to week long trips to Coast Rica, they really know what they are doing. I'm not a sentimental person, but I fondly remember the place where I met my new squeeze. It wasn't love at first sight or anything. He was slim and dark with sweet gear. I was sold when I saw he was 20% off. As having just moved to Nashville and one that hates driving, I had to find a bike stat. I knew I was leaning towards specialized bikes and Cumberland was one of few that carried them. Within minutes, I had the greatest bike guy (Chris) helping me out. He wasn't pushy and took his time to help me choose the best bike for me. I spent almost the entire morning there and ended up leaving with Sirius Black (I was considering the Nimbus Lethousand) and a list of places to eat/drink in Nashville. Seriously this place has the nicest people ever. The cashier spent 30 minutes monitoring live weather reports to figure out how to help me avoid riding out the store in the pouring rain. Worth noting. If you happen to be a baller like myself (no), and spend over $500 you get a $50 reward credit towards your next purchase. This is a local business that absolutely deserves all the accolades it has already received. When it comes to the outdoors, you can either go here, or REI in Brentwood, but for me, Cumberland is the obvious choice, and not just because of location. While this store deals in bikes and camping/backpacking/hiking stuff, I can really only comment on the bike shop; all my backpacking gear is pretty reliable so I haven't had to replace anything for a long time. If you need to get your bike fixed, this is the place to have the work done. The mechanic is very upfront with the cost of parts and repair, so you're not hit with any surprises when it comes time to pay the bill. And repairs are relatively quick, too. A few weeks ago, I got hit by a car while biking to work. I didn't get a scratch, but the bike was no longer safe to ride, and the cost of repairs would have been more than the bike was worth when I bought it. I was lucky enough to get an old Cannondale at an abandoned bike auction for very cheap, though it was in rough condition. I took it into Cumberland, and had them replace the shifters, chain, tires, grips, and inner tubes, and give it a tune up. Originally, I had wanted to upgrade it to disc brakes, but the mechanic informed me that I wouldn't be able to do that on that bike. I ended up paying about $170, but the bike looks and rides like new. Shifting is a much faster and smoother even compared with my old bike, and my old bike was only 8 years old (compared to my current one, which is nearly 20). The only thing I did was replace the old, brittle brake shoes on the rear wheel. This is THE place I would bring my bike for any future repairs or upgrades, and if I was in the market for a new bike, again, this would be the place. They sell Gary Fisher/Trek, Specialized, and Surly bikes, and have a wide selection in the shop that will please both casual bikers and cycling enthusiasts. However, the thing that sets this place apart from anywhere else isn't the selection; it's the fact that they employ individuals who are as knowledgeable as they are trustworthy. Even if I bought a bike somewhere else, I'd bring it here to get worked on, no question about it. read more

I really enjoy shopping at Cumberland Transit because they have an extremely knowledgeable staff, a friendly staff on top of that, and they carry everything that an outdoorsy, adventurous type could ever desire. Bikes, swim gear, hiking gear, tents, more bikes, climbing gear, running gear, kayaking gear, more bikes, and so much more. I stopped in this past week to pick myself up a chalk ball for climbing, some schwanky new climbing shoes so I can really toe the walls and cliffs, and a bit of tape for my poor hapless, beat-up fingers that have taken a beating from climbing. You will never regret shopping locally here. The place is totally rad (I'm trying to bring back "rad", so everyone join in and include it in a review!). I love this place! Today, I was greeted by two adorable dogs. One was an Australian shepherd and another was a cream colored Chihuahua/ Pomeranian mix... so cute!!! Customer service is great until you buy something that is defective. I bought a pair of Montrail hiking boots from them. Used them occassionally & kept them in my closet. Today, the sole separated from the bottom of the shoe. When I called CT, I was told I must have left them outside or in a hot car, and could only return them if I had them less than 30 days, had tags on them, and had never worn them. When I explained that I kept them inside with my other shoes, was told that with age, glue will begin to deteriorate. I have Vasque hiking boots that are at least 5 years older than these. Never seen this before. Anyway, the manager did not even say he was sorry I had trouble, offer to help in any way, and seemed to think it had to be my fault, and couldn't be a defect. One of my favorite outdoor sporting good stores in Nashville is Cumberland Transit. They have the best selection of all sorts of outdoor sporting equipment. It is a huge store and they carry Patagonia, Noth Face, as well as bikes and bike accessories. I went in there looking for a fleece and was totally overwhelmed by their selection. I was helped by a guy named Leo, and he was super friendly and knew everything about all their products. It's tough sometimes shopping for things like fleeces with out some help, because it seems like there are a million different fleeces designed for a million different conditions, so it was nice having some good help! read more

These guys have always been a class act, and my last visit was no exception. On my holiday trip home, I desperately needed to find a bicycle box. My dear mountain bike had been gathering dust in my in-laws' garage for three years and they (justifiably) wanted me to ship it to my new home--but where does one find a bicycle box? I admit I looked around half-heartedly, as I didn't want to spend $60 on a piece of cardboard. As I took a quasi-nostalgic drive down West End on my last night in town, I spied CT. My odd request was met with enthusiasm, and a box was produced immediately. I offered to pay, but my suggestion was waved off with a smile. Though the store has a huge selection (especially for an independent shop), I managed to find a little something to return the favor. I had them do an overhaul on my beater bike. They left bolts off the back fender on my bike which lead to it getting sucked into the wheel, stoping the bike while I was on it, making me flip head first. Could have killed me. Told the manager. I looked at hiking boots, climbing gear, camping stuff, bike equipment and more. For the most part I don't know enough about any of it to tell you if it's good stuff or not, but I can tell you that they have a lot to choose from! They also have bike center (for repairs and such) for those who have bikes that need some TLC. What stood out to me is that Cumberland Transit is actually staffed with people that does this stuff, that is, it's staff is chalk full of tri-athletes, hikers, outdoors type people, whom are for the most part fantastically helpful. read more

I came in yesterday to start looking at bikes, and wound up buying a bike I really love for less than the price point I expected. Jake worked with me for over an hour and was so knowledgeable and helpful- he answered all my questions, didn't pressure me into looking at things outside my price range and was so helpful at teaching me how to care for my bike and make it last. I was able to test ride the bike i wanted in their parking lot, which make my purchase even easier. I took my bike home and went immediately for a ride, and love it. This place is one of Nashville's gems. It's a fantastic and local outdoor store. I ride my bike everywhere and have a junky commuter bike and a nicer road bike. They are my go-to for affordable and solid maintenance. They've managed to keep my commuter bike safe and road worthy for, well, a few decades. Think of this as your REI East location where the focus is on bikes. I hadn't gone to Cumberland Transit much because the parking is ridiculously bad (street parking and a park on top of each other lot in the back) and I'm sure I can do better online shopping for all the wonderful products that they have. There are a couple of great reasons to go here though including the fact they have great information on local sporty events/races/eco events. Even more impressive is their expertise in all things biking. I got my shoes for spin class here and know nothing of riding ACTUAL bikes....not that anyone would bike in Nashville anyway where running down bike riders seems to be a hobby for many drivers. They have an impressive selection of road and mountain bikes and gear for all ages and skills. I'm equally impressed by their fun gadgets for bikes including baskets/lights/backpacks and clothing galore. Their clothing doesn't stop at bike friendly stuff and they have one of the best collections of North Face jackets I've seen in Nashville. Staff is super friendly and knowledgable and can direct you to places you can bike and have a higher likelyhood of survival. Try to hit this place in off hours though to make the most of the staff cuz the weekends I've been in, things can get super busy. read more

I feel like I am in a mountain lodge with something awesome in every nook and cranny. Every person there is always friendly and willing to help. If they do not know the answer, they will get the person that does. What also is helpful is that most of the employees use the products. If you are heading on a hiking trip, canoeing trip, bike trip, etc. someone will be able to help you with your gear because they have been there. I was greeted at the door and pointed in the right direction by one staff member, and then a few minutes later another woman helped me find exactly what I was looking for, which was good because this place is HUGE. They seem to have pretty much anything you could need for outdoor recreation: hiking maps of parks all over the country, raincoats, clothes, and all kinds of equipment for cycling, paddling, hiking, and climbing. Like all outdoor gear stores, Cumberland Transit isn't cheap. But they do a have a 40% off clothes rack, and their high quality, brand name products seem to be worth the price. The store also has an array of brochures and flyers about outdoor trips and events in the area. And if you're planning an outing or looking to buy used gear, you can find discussion boards and free classifieds on their website.
