Review Highlights - Culebra Island Adventures

After snorkeling and lunch(they provided), they drove us to lovely Flamenco Beach where we swam for several hours.

WITHOUT A PADDLE…read more Kayaking during the day proving too easy?  How about kayaking at night...through a mangrove forest. As my wife and I planned our second trip to Puerto Rico, we agreed that a bio bay kayak tour should be on the list.  Only 5 biobays exist in the world, 3 of which are in PR (in Vieques, La Parguera, and here on the far northeast corner of the island).  There's a few kayaking tour companies in the area, each offering a similar bioluminescent excursion. Hang on, biolu-what?  I'll skip the TED talk--all you need to know is that a certain kind of marine plankton makes the water in extra salty lagoons glow blue.  It's the same science that gives jellyfish, fireflies, and deep-sea anglerfish their special ability to produce light. When we arrived around 8pm, tour guides gave our group of 15-20 life vests and provided instructions, like what to do if your ass falls out of the kayak.  Our goal was Laguna Grande (literally "big lagoon"), roughly 1 mile from our starting point on the shores of Fajardo. So......getting to Laguna Grande is not easy.  Along with a partner, you'll paddle your way through a narrow channel surrounded on all sides by thick mangroves, including an overhead canopy.  This is tricky during daylight hours, but at night the difficulty ramps up.  Keep in mind that visibility in these thick mangrove patches drops to near-zero at times. You might (probably will) have to avoid other kayak groups and (possibly) motorboats as you make your way to the lagoon, all while trying not to crash into the person in front of you, fall too far behind, or be knocked unconscious/impaled by low branches.  The outbound trip was not super chill, thankfully coming back was less stressful. Having an experienced partner is CRUCIAL. Bio bay tours are very much like whale watching, in that your visit is based almost entirely on luck.  A lot needs to go right in order to see magic stuff in the water, like the moon being in its 'new' phase (full moon casts too bright of a reflection) and no recent rainfall (rain comes down as fresh water, decreasing the lagoon's salinity). Under ideal circumstances, the microorganisms appear as florescent blue swirls when you move your hand/paddle through the water.  What we saw were closer to electrical 'sparks', still cool but not vibrant.  Capturing what little bio-presence we saw on camera would've been impossible, so we smartly kept our phones in the car. Oddly enough, mosquitos weren't a problem. * TL;DR * For me, this was more about the journey than the destination. If I'd hung all of my hopes on seeing tons of bioluminescent activity, I would've been disappointed.  I was focused more on trying not to capsize while also listening to the symphony of 'coqui' (the local island tree frog). It can be romantic with a spouse/partner, assuming they're not yelling at you the whole time. Wear comfy clothes (swim trunks aren't a bad idea) and be aware that parts of your outfit will be crunchy the next day, due to the lagoon water being twice as salty as the ocean. Mangroves play a critical role in the tropical ecosystem, but they stink! Would definitely recommend this to anyone over the age of 18; it's an awesome late-night adventure and one of the most unique things you can do while in Puerto Rico.

He kept yelling at us over and over to follow him as he was dead stopped in the water and he was flush with the group. We went back and forth between being told to speed up or slow down and spent a lot of time just floating rather than kayaking. We were unable to see him at all and all of the yelling was very stressful, I wish we could have just had a dim light to follow like other tours offer. We were supposed to kayak for an hour according to the description but were out of the water by 8:30 and didn't even enter the water until after 7:50. And before you ask, no one was late so we didn't start late. We spent more time rafted together talking about the stars and the constellations than we did enjoying the dinoflagellates. For reference, I have been coming to mosquito bay every few years for nearly 25 years. I have never felt more rushed like cattle and unable to appreciate the beauty of the bay. Additionally we overheard the guides talking about various members of the group behind their backs afterwards. I speak Spanish and heard it all-- never appropriate to do this in front of customers no matter the situation. One other guest within earshot heard them saying the things above and commented to me about it as she could also understand them. Also overheard one joking with another about how they're essentially here for the money grab. Unfortunately I think that his phrase is the best way to sum up the vibes of our tour. Adding a star because the bay is amazing. Even though it's not as bright after Maria it's still such an amazing piece of nature.

I can see why some people give these guys bad reviews though. They were running like an hour or so behind, and then there were people signed up, apparently, but driver didn't know about them. Driver doesn't speak much English, so he has to keep calling dispatcher and then handing the phone over to the tourists so they can try to work things out with the dispatcher. In this particular case they ended up with a third shift for the night, to accommodate these other tourists. Most of the other outfits apparently have weight limits for the kayaks. Not so here. I'm pretty big and heavy and they put me in a kayak with my wife and daughter. My leg was pinned in pretty well on one side, and on the other side cocked up above the kayak, causing us to ride low in the water, but also feel a little top-heavy. I'm a fairly experienced canoer and have ridden kayaks a few times, but was still a little anxious the whole time about our stability, and the growing pain in my leg. I was also surprised that our instruction beforehand basically amounted to remembering our kayak number and agreeing to holler back loudly YES when the leader would call out our number in the dark. No mention of how to paddle a kayak. I guess they figure everybody knows that by now, or else it's pretty obvious and easy to figure out. There were a few people bumbling around and running into other kayaks, but it's not clear if instructions would have helped them. I don't know why people would give lower reviews for the condition of the access road. Yes, it is rough and bumpy, but it's not that terribly long, and all the outfitters must drive through it. Honestly I feel the van that we were in was probably a lot more comfortable than the old school buses that the other outfits were using.

They explained that if you are expect anything that looks like glowing, bioluminescence is more like glitter in the water & you have to stir the water a lot to see anything. A group of us were packed in a van & driven down a totally unmaintained dirt road only to wade through smelly muck and take a 20 minute kayak ride that included a 5 minute lecture in the middle of the bay. A few thought they might have seen a little 'glitter' on their paddles but either way no one should waste their money on one of these toors.
