Whenever I know I will be in Tucson, I check out the Classique Cuisine website to see what's going on while I am there. This year I made it to a Bread Making Class in early October. It was wonderful and I've come home with some great recipes and the courage to make them. Mardi and Bob are quite entertaining and the instructions are concise. I wish they were closer but I'm going to sign up on their website and see what I can learn long-distanced. *My husband said the french bread I took home from class was the best he's had. I've been looking for a very long time for a cooking school that teaches technique along with hands on cooking. I took the 7 week Basics of Gourmet Cooking and learned a lot. I've been cooking for many years and really benefited from all the technical skills covered. It was really fun, hands on and packed with recipes. My hubby had been wanting to take cooking classes together for a long time, so I bought him a gift certificate here after a really exhaustive online search left me very few options for classes in town. First, their website really needs work; it's not easy to navigate. I paid for the gift certificate via PayPal and you can register for classes on the site, but I got a security warning, and if you have a gift certificate, you must call them to schedule. It was very difficult to get a hold of them, and I sent multiple emails and left voice messages to schedule our class. Turns out they did respond to my email, but it went to my Spam folder. When I finally got a hold of Mardi, she said we were scheduled. It was difficult for me to find a night that worked for us to take the class, and I actually called out from work to take Knife Skills on a Tuesday evening. Our experience there was pleasant however. Mardi had some great tips, and her husband was quiet but friendly and talked to us about some knives and how to sharpen them. We made a gazpacho and I did take away some skills. When you're done cooking, you enjoy a meal with Mardi and Bob as though you are guests in their home. They are a very interesting couple, and I enjoyed talking to them about their adventures outside the cooking school. Mardi does say she is self-taught, and she runs the cooking school out of their house, so you're not learning from a chef who studied at an accredited school. I did feel the price for the class was high: $64. They do offer specials where you can bring a friend for $35 and some of the individual (non-basics) classes cost less. I might go to another class with them sometime, because I did have fun and learn some new skills, but I probably wouldn't be a regular here. read more

The food could taste like mana from heaven. The recipes could be writ on ancient tablets handed down from deities to monks to their own hands. But I'd never know. Four years ago, my wife bought me two culinary class gift certificates to Cuisine Classique. Back then I tried a few times to sign up for a few classes as they appeared on the website (a clunky affair, but it might be servicable). The website appears to have ways of buying into classes via Paypal, but no clear method of paying with one of the gift certificates (which appear to possess a unique id to each). I tried emailing them through the contact email address provided, and eventually got a call back to learn that the classes currently listed were all full up. Que sera, I thought. We moved away for a few years, but my wife has recently landed another job out here in Tucson, and I realized that my certificates were still good until 2020! Huzzah! I visited their website again to look at the upcoming classes. The site does not appear to have been improved in any fashion. The schedule does appear to be up-to-date, but still no method of paying via gift certificate after four years. :( I called on Wednesday to try and check if the upcoming chili relleno class had any openings. It was 9:50am, and no one answered, so I double-checked their website - aha, they don't open until 10am. Fair enough. I called at 10:20am, no answer, so I left a voice mail. By 3pm, I hadn't received a call back, so I called again. Still no answer, and now their system says that the mailbox is full. Hunh. I tried again at 4:30pm (since their site says it's open from 10a-5p), and got the same message. "Bummer. Better try tomorrow." I sent an email asking someone to call me back to see if I can line things up. I called again at around 10:30am on Thursday. No answer, same message. Then I notice on their site that they also have an 888 number. I give that a shot - the robovoice stated "All circuits are full". Since other calls are fine, I suspect it's an issue with the number. So, today, I had a spare hour - man, I wish I could have that hour back. I drove out to their address in Oro Valley at around 12:30pm. I confirmed that their website states they're open from 10am-5pm. On arrival, it appears that the classes are run out of someone's personal residence. There's a sign advertising cooking classes, and there is a bit of space for three or four cars to the side of the house. But when I knocked on the door, no one answered. I tried ringing the doorbell as well, but to no avail. No one came to the door, still no one answers their phone numbers. They have a blue box with pamphlets for upcoming classes, but as of today, the only pamphlets were from April. At this point, I have to question the existence of this business. Is it real, or is it a scam? Have they shut down for some reason? I don't know. I'm just pretty jaded about this place right now. If someone asked me if they should give it a look, I'd recommend just taking all their cash and flushing it down a toilet. At least they'd get a show then. read more

Such a fun and friendly environment to learn some more advanced cooking techniques. I love cooking but have never taken any class before. There were three of us in the class and we all got to prepare one of the dishes used in the final meal. The food we made was unique and allowed for some new techniques to be learned. Equally helpful was having Marti there to ask any questions. She was so helpful and friendly with even my most basic questions. I would definitely recommend if you are a snowbird looking for something to try while in Tucson, or anyone like me who wants to learn and watch a professional chef in the kitchen. read more

This is actually the only game in town for Kid's Culinary School, and I thought long and hard before deciding to invest in my grandson's interest in cooking. In addition, the school is located sooo far from our house! However, I'm really happy that we went ahead and did this. He has had a wonderful time and his enthusiasm has never waned (an entire 5 days...yay!) I really can't wait until he is old enough to attend the Teen's Culinary School at the same location. I've often wished that all public schools included "cooking" in the regular curriculum, from grade school on up, so that today's children could learn that not all food comes from fast-food restaurants, and that there is a way to prepare food from scratch, and it doesn't have to be exceedingly difficult. Obviously, they can't be handing 5-year-olds sharp weapons and tell them to butcher a cow, so, duh, a lot of pre-prepared items are in use. Yesterday, my grandson learned how to make a Chef's Salad not only taste good, but look good! A work of art! I can't think of anything negative to say. read more

My step-son and I were gifted this cooking experience by his mother. It took a bit of persistence to get our reservations but it turned out to be well worth it. Mardi proved to be an outstanding instructor who was quick to point out the distinctions between slavish observance of the recipe directions and the great fun of fudging here and there where prior cooking experience tells you to "just do it." Mardi was masterful at bringing the seven students together into a close-knit group, eager to help each other out and not at all shy about pounding her with questions (to which she seemed to have answers that actually worked). The recipes were not overly complex, being accessible to preparing after we all went home (i have prepared two of them already). I learned at least two new food prep techniques which make my preparation much easier!! Well worth the money and especially the time!! Thanks much, Mardi!! read more

There were 7 people in the class, everyone was really friendly. We got copies of the recipes, which were all delicious. I learned a lot, so did my parents. We really enjoyed it.
