A Charming and Quiet City with Colourful Colonial Architecture, Lots of Culture and Fascinating History! Worth a Visit!
Valladolid is an absolutely gorgeous city and it is my favourite place in the Yucatan! I have visited Valladolid twice already this year (once in May 2015 for 4 days and more recently in November 2015 for 3 days).
Valladolid is a pleasant, lovely and charming small colonial city with a lot of character and a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere. The Mayan culture is very prominent and interesting and the city has a lot of fascinating history and significance. The locals are very friendly and welcoming and I loved the laid-back and slow-paced vibe.
The narrow cobblestone streets are lined with an array of pastel-coloured houses and buildings and detailed colonial architecture. One of my favourite things to do while I was staying there, was simply to wander the streets and find interesting and unique buildings and doors. There are so many wonderful opportunities for photography in this city!
Valladolid has a lot of interesting and worthwhile attractions and things to do inside the city including: Cenote Zaci (gorgeous cenote in the middle of the city), the San Bernardino Convent, Calzada de los Frailes, the beautiful main plaza/park, San Gervasio Cathedral (located on the south side of the main square), Chocol-Ha Cacao Factory (free authentic Mayan chocolate samples), and the Mercado Municipal (local market).
Valladolid has such a perfect and central location in the Yucatan, situated in between Merida and Tulum. There are so many amazing things to do and places to visit in the surrounding area outside of Valladolid such as the ruins of Chichen Itza (45 minutes), Coba (one hour), and Ek Balam (25 minutes), Rio Lagartos, Cenotes Xkeken and Samula (10 minutes), Hacienda San Lorenzo Oxman (7 minutes), lots of authentic Mayan villages, and much more.
I loved how quiet and relaxed the city felt, and the fact that it was not overly touristy. Valladolid was named a "Pueblo Magico" in 2012 and it definitely felt like a very special and authentic place.
If you are traveling through the Yucatan, I HIGHLY recommend a visit to Valladolid. A lot of people make a short stop here to see the ruins of Chichen Itza but I think this city is definitely worth a longer stay! read more
