Now here we are in 2026, and both our PVC sewer lines are blocked by tree roots because they used gaskets that didn't fit right, among other shortcuts. Rather than stop and get the right part during installation, they just used what they had on hand. We are both now having to pay many thousands of dollars to clear the roots and install liners or patches. Maybe they are better now?? But just a fair warning.

I called George Patey first thing Monday and was told they were booked for the week. But, they told me their plumbers were going to be in my building that morning. I should ask them to look at the job and see how much time it would take. The plumbers told me it was not a minor issue but they promised they would at least put some WD-40 on the decades-old joints to make them easier to remove. They couldn't promise anything. I had a doctor's appointment and left my door unlocked. When I returned a couple of hours later, I could tell they had been in my apartment. I was expecting that they had applied the WD-40. Instead, they had fixed the pipe! I couldn't believe it. Here's a shout out to them for going the extra mile for a customer in need. Frank Carbone Perry Street Brookline

Their work is good. Bedside etiquette and follow-up not so much…read more My mom recently had her house converted from oil to gas heat. It was a big job and required lots of work. I called Ahern for an estimate. They came out and did an estimate of $12,500. We felt that was a little much and were able to talk them down to $11,500. They sent me the contract. I signed it. I talked to them and they said they were busy, but would be able to start in a few weeks. After OVER A MONTH and several phone calls, I was finally able to get ahold of them to have them start the work (obviously, we want this stuff installed before it gets unbearably cold). The conversion itself only took about three days. They were there all day long and were very nice, respectful, did all the cleanup, put back everything they moved, etc. Given the scope of the project, I knew there would probably be a few issues afterward and there were. One sink on the first floor had no hot water. The heat on the third floor was on overkill; meanwhile, the second floor got no heat at all. The new hot water heater was leaking (only about a teaspoon a day, but a water heater shouldn't leak AT ALL). Each time, I called Joe (the owner) and he was as pleasant as can be. However, though he promised to come out "as soon as possible" and fix the problems, it sometimes took over a day for him to make it out to the house (and we live less than a mile away from his office). I know he's probably busy and technically, his work there is done, but shouldn't those be things you check before you leave the project? I was slightly disappointed. They were VERY nice about everything, but I felt like everything required a million phone calls and follow-ups. They required a 50% deposit before work could start and the other 50% afterward. When I finally got the bill for the other 50%, I noticed that they quoted the ORIGINAL price and not the negotiated one. Tisk tisk. I sent in a copy of the contract and the remaining amount for the lower price. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Luckily, we were able to get that plumbing company's name. After speaking with them and being told that they weren't responsible or even touched anything (witnessed by others that he did) we were told to call the cops. After that chaos, the end result was that we still didn't have water and of course, it was the start of the weekend. Well, we called CTW and Dan came out not long after. He was able to coordinate everything that needed to be done, including contacting the township to turn off the water, so he could fix the problem. The whole process was about two hours and we were rocking and rolling with water again. Dan and CTW were very responsive, took care of us quickly and more importantly, were all around good people that helped to solve our seemingly massive problem caused by a reprehensible plumber from another company. I can not recommend CTW enough!

In the current fast-moving real estate market, a decision had to be made quickly. It was late on a bitter cold Saturday afternoon on a 3-day weekend in January and we were at a house in northern Vermont trying to figure out whom we could call who might be able to advise us. Woodacre Fuel & HVAC have taken care of our heating and cooling systems at our home in the Boston suburbs meticulously for many years. They have always given us honest and practical advice and all aspects of their service is first rate. They are available to help their customers 24/7. We know this first-hand because during both bitter cold spells and scorching heat waves, Wes, Doug and the Woodacre Team have been there for our family. So, taking a long-shot, we called Woodacre Fuel & HVAC's office and left a brief message asking for advice. We had an e-mail back from Wes Woodacre within 3 minutes and a phone call too. He offered clear explanations on how a particular type of heating system works and advice on replacement with a rough, ball-park cost estimate. Wes was extraordinarily helpful and we appreciated this beyond words. This experience has highlighted for us what is unique and special about the best Family-Owned Businesses - there is a level of honest and sincere concern and caring for customers and their families that you do not get from a larger company. Woodacre Fuel and HVAC is a Family-Owned Business in the absolute best sense of the words.

On their first visit they were quick to tell me I needed a new water heater and new motor. Quoted $800 for the motor and said it would likely arrive in 2-3 days. I later looked up the average cost of motor replacement and it was half what they quoted ($400). Nevertheless, I tried to do right by this business and called twice to check on order status. Each day we had no hot water and substandard heat with toddlers in the house... Eventually a whole week went by and I called urgently when the fire alarm started going off and thought it might have to do with the furnace. The owner was upset that I had used another oil supplier in the meantime and said he honestly didn't care what happened to me or my family, and I could forget them finishing the original job I had hired them for.
